Description

Road Town is quiet, Jost Van Dyke has a beach bar that invented a cocktail, and Virgin Gorda's Baths look like nowhere else — but the BVI's mobile networks are completely separate from the US Virgin Islands next door, and most travellers get that wrong exactly once. A Blikst BVI eSIM runs on Digicel, the dominant Caribbean carrier, at 3G / 4G speeds across Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

Where Digicel covers the BVI

Road Town and the West End of Tortola have consistent 4G. The north-shore beaches — Cane Garden Bay, Smugglers Cove, Brewer's Bay — have 4G with some weakening in the steep hillsides. Virgin Gorda's Spanish Town and The Valley are solid; the Baths and Devil's Bay get signal from the main roads but can weaken right on the boulders. Anegada — being flat and isolated — has 3G to 4G near Setting Point and The Settlement but little coverage at the eastern end near Loblolly Bay. Jost Van Dyke has signal around Great Harbour and White Bay; the windward side is thinner.

Why BVI is different from USVI

The British Virgin Islands are a separate jurisdiction from the US Virgin Islands, with separate carriers and separate roaming rules. A USVI plan stops working when you cross to the BVI — and vice versa. Home-carrier roaming for BVI is typically billed at "premium Caribbean" rates, often $15/day or higher. Picking up a local SIM is possible at the Beef Island (EIS) airport counter or in Road Town but requires passport registration and a walk-in wait.

Arrival by air or ferry

Terrance B. Lettsome International (EIS) on Beef Island handles most direct flights from San Juan and Antigua. Many travellers fly into STT (US Virgin Islands) instead and take the ferry to Road Town or West End — a 45–60 minute crossing. Install the eSIM profile before you fly. If you're on the ferry from STT, your Blikst BVI line activates as you clear BVI customs and register on Digicel; your USVI plan (if you have one) drops the same moment.

Apps for a BVI trip

  • WhatsApp: The default for charter captains, villa managers, and dive operators. Nearly every small business runs on it.
  • Google Maps: Tortola and Virgin Gorda roads are well mapped. Anegada's interior tracks are sparse — download offline maps.
  • PredictWind and Windy: If you're on a charter, you'll check these hourly. Hurricane season (June–November) demands a weather-watching habit.
  • BVI Tourist Board app: Ferry schedules between Road Town, West End, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke. Times shift with the season.
  • Boatyball: Mooring-ball reservations for Norman Island, Cooper Island, Peter Island, and The Bight. Essential for charter sailors.

Charter and sailing notes

Most BVI trips involve at least one day on a boat. Signal is strong in the anchorages — The Bight on Norman Island, Cane Garden Bay, Leverick Bay, Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke — but weakens on open water between islands and drops to nothing on the Anegada crossing until you're within a few miles of Setting Point. Pre-download any mooring apps, dive-site info, and chart data. Your eSIM is for the shore time, not the mid-channel sail.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A day trip from St Thomas: 500 MB–1 GB. A long weekend bareboat charter around Tortola, Norman, and Peter: 2 GB. A one-week charter covering the main loop out to Anegada: 3–5 GB. A two-week villa stay on Virgin Gorda or Tortola with daily snorkelling trips and some remote work: 10 GB. A month living aboard or working from a Road Town apartment: 20 GB.

Install before you fly or take the ferry, land in the BVI with a line that knows it's on Digicel, and skip the "why is my USVI SIM not working" moment that catches out cruisers every week.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst BVI eSIM runs on Digicel, the dominant Caribbean carrier, at 3G and 4G speeds. That gives you reliable mobile data across the main islands rather than relying on patchy hotel Wi-Fi. One thing worth knowing up front: the BVI's networks are completely separate from the US Virgin Islands next door, so a USVI plan will not work here and this eSIM is built specifically for Digicel's BVI coverage.

Coverage spans Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Road Town and Tortola's West End get consistent 4G, and the north-shore beaches like Cane Garden Bay have 4G that weakens in the steep hillsides. Virgin Gorda's Spanish Town is solid, though the Baths can drop signal right on the boulders. Anegada has 3G to 4G near Setting Point but little at the eastern end by Loblolly Bay. Jost Van Dyke covers Great Harbour and White Bay; the windward side is thinner.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes minutes. Install the profile by scanning the QR code provided before you fly or board the ferry. Activation is automatic: your line switches on as you arrive in the BVI and registers on Digicel. If you ferry over from St Thomas, it activates as you clear BVI customs, and your USVI plan, if you have one, drops at the same moment.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support, on an iPhone look under Settings, General, About for an EID number, and on Android check the network or SIM settings. If you see an EID or an eSIM option, you are good to go.

It depends on your trip. A day trip from St Thomas needs around 500 MB to 1 GB. A long weekend bareboat charter around Tortola, Norman and Peter suits about 2 GB. A one-week charter covering the main loop out to Anegada fits 3 to 5 GB. A two-week villa stay with daily snorkelling and some remote work is comfortable on 10 GB, and a month living aboard or working from Road Town is better on 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. On a charter that is handy for keeping crew online in the anchorages. Bear in mind signal is strong in spots like The Bight and Great Harbour but weakens on open water between islands and drops out on the Anegada crossing until you near Setting Point, so pre-download chart and mooring data for the sail.

This is a data plan, so it is designed for internet rather than traditional voice minutes or SMS. In the BVI that is rarely a problem: WhatsApp is the default for charter captains, villa managers and dive operators, and you can call or message over data using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone, so you keep your usual number for anything that needs it.

Usually, yes. Home-carrier roaming for the BVI is typically billed at premium Caribbean rates, often $15 a day or higher, which adds up fast on a week-long charter. A local SIM is possible at the Beef Island airport counter or in Road Town, but it requires passport registration and a walk-in wait. The Blikst eSIM skips both: you install it before you travel and land already connected on Digicel.
