Description

South America overland trips are long, border-heavy, and often involve three or four countries in a single itinerary — Buenos Aires to Iguazú to Rio, or Lima to La Paz to Atacama. A Blikst South America eSIM bundles 11 countries onto one profile: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. The network attaches to Telefónica / Movistar / Vivo or their regional affiliates (Millicom / Tigo, Otecel in Ecuador, Outremer in French Guiana, Pegaso in Mexico) at 3G / 4G / 5G speeds depending on the country.

Coverage across the continent

Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Rio, Santiago, Bogotá, Lima, Quito, and Montevideo all have strong 4G with growing 5G in the CBDs. Main highways (Argentine RN9, Brazilian BR-101 coastal, Chilean Ruta 5, Peruvian Pan-American) hold 4G through most of their length. The Patagonian steppe south of Bariloche and along Ruta 40 has long dead zones; the Atacama around San Pedro has coverage at the town and drops across the altiplano. The Amazon — whether from Manaus, Iquitos, Leticia, or Puerto Maldonado — should be treated as offline the moment you leave the urban area. The Bolivian altiplano (not included in this plan) and the Darién gap (not included) are regional hazards worth knowing. Colombia's coffee triangle, Chile's Lake District, and Uruguay's coast are well-covered.

Border behaviour

The eSIM hands off between supported carriers at country boundaries. Iguazú border (Argentina-Brazil or Argentina-Paraguay on the Triple Frontier) moves between Vivo, Telefónica Argentina, and others depending on which tower is nearest. Peru-Bolivia (Copacabana / Desaguadero) only covers the Peruvian side — Bolivia isn't in this plan. Chile-Peru at Arica / Tacna switches cleanly between Movistar Chile and Movistar Peru. The plan does not roam into Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, or Belize. Buy country-specific plans for those legs.

Cost vs. local SIMs or roaming

Buying a local SIM in each South American country — Claro in Brazil, Personal in Argentina, Claro or Movistar in Peru — works but burns time at every border. Passport registration varies; Brazilian SIMs require a CPF (tax ID) in some shops, which is a friction tourists often don't expect. Most North American and European carriers charge $10–$12 per day for roaming into this region. A two-week three-country trip sees a regional eSIM come in well below a stack of daily roaming fees.

Arrival across the hub airports

Install the profile on home Wi-Fi before you fly. EZE (Buenos Aires), GRU (São Paulo), GIG (Rio), SCL (Santiago), BOG (Bogotá), LIM (Lima), UIO (Quito), MVD (Montevideo), and SJO (San José) all pick up the eSIM immediately on arrival. Transit through Panama (PTY) is common on Copa Airlines itineraries — the plan won't activate there (Panama isn't in the plan) and will register when you land in your next supported country.

Local apps across the region

  • Uber, Didi, Cabify, 99: Mix varies by country. Uber is strong everywhere; Didi dominates much of Mexico and Brazil; 99 is Brazilian-origin and widely used; Cabify is a Spanish alternative in several countries.
  • iFood, Rappi, PedidosYa: Food delivery. iFood is Brazil's giant; Rappi covers most Spanish-speaking LATAM; PedidosYa is strong in Southern Cone.
  • WhatsApp: Non-negotiable. Hostels, guides, tour operators, and shuttle services all run on WhatsApp across the continent.
  • Google Maps, Waze, Maps.me: Waze is particularly useful in São Paulo and Lima traffic. Maps.me for offline use in the Amazon and the altiplano.
  • Currency: Parallel / blue-market exchange rates exist in several countries (Argentina notably). XE and specific apps like "Dólar Hoy" help you know whether to pay in USD or local currency at any given moment.

Plan sizing by trip length

A one-week single-country trip works on 5 GB. A two-week classic (Buenos Aires-Iguazú-Rio, or Lima-Cusco-La Paz minus the Bolivian leg) wants 10 GB. Three-week continent-spanning trips fit 20 GB. Long-term backpackers on a six-week LATAM loop should go 50 GB, particularly if they're hot-spotting laptops from hostels.

Install at home, fly, and the profile attaches to whichever supported carrier sees your device first.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
