Description

Africa is the continent where "just buy a local SIM when you land" falls apart fastest — SIM registration rules are strict in most countries, FICA-style paperwork takes 30+ minutes, and your number resets every border. The Blikst Africa regional eSIM runs across a partnership of Orange, Airtel, Cell C, Vodacom and MTN — the five biggest footprints on the continent — and auto-switches between them as you move. One QR code handles the whole overland route whether that's Cape Town to Victoria Falls, or Nairobi down through Tanzania to Zanzibar.

Coverage footprint

MTN and Vodacom dominate Southern and East Africa — South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon. Airtel fills in the gaps across East and Central Africa — Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, DRC, Malawi. Orange covers the Francophone West — Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Madagascar, Botswana and parts of Morocco. Cell C backs up Southern Africa. The eSIM picks whichever partner has the best signal — you don't pick. Speeds range from 4G in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos and Dar es Salaam, down to 3G across most rural areas and some national parks.

Border behaviour and what to expect

When you cross from Kenya into Tanzania or from Zambia into Zimbabwe, the line re-registers on the new country's partner carrier within a few minutes of you clearing the border and toggling airplane mode off. Data pool is shared — 20 GB total across the whole trip, not per country. If your overland route goes through a country not in the partner list, the eSIM goes dark until the next covered country. Worth checking the exact coverage list against your itinerary before you book.

Cost vs. buying local SIMs in every country

A realistic Cape Town to Nairobi overland trip hits five to eight countries. Each local SIM is $5–$15 plus registration time (sometimes an hour in smaller border towns), plus a new phone number every leg. US and UK carriers charging $10–$15 per day for Africa roaming means a two-week trip runs $140–$210. A 30-day 10 GB Blikst Africa plan is a fraction of either. If you're a Peace Corps volunteer, aid worker, or long-haul overlander, the regional plan pays for itself in the first week.

Activation and arrival

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi — airport Wi-Fi at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (JNB), Cape Town (CPT), Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta (NBO), Addis Ababa Bole (ADD), Lagos (LOS), Cairo (CAI), Casablanca (CMN), Accra Kotoka (ACC), and Dar es Salaam (DAR) is usually free but often crowded and slow. The eSIM activates on first data use in a covered country. If you're transiting through Dubai or Doha, don't toggle data on — the plan only starts counting when you hit an African partner tower.

Apps that matter across the continent

  • WhatsApp — the default comms channel everywhere in Africa. Lodges, drivers, tour operators, and taxi guys all use it. Budget for constant background data.
  • Uber and Bolt — dominant in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Uganda. Data-light but GPS-heavy.
  • M-Pesa (Kenya, Tanzania) — mobile money is often more common than cards. You'll need data to access the app.
  • EskomSePush in South Africa for load-shedding schedules; power cuts affect Wi-Fi at cafes and guesthouses.
  • Maps.me or offline Google Maps — coverage drops outside towns; download before you go.

Plan sizing by trip length

A 10-day safari + Cape Town stay fits in 5 GB easily. A two-week overland Nairobi-Zanzibar-Kilimanjaro loop needs 10 GB. A month-long Cape-to-Cairo classic overland run through six or more countries with heavy map use should start at 20 GB. Working remotely from a Nairobi or Cape Town co-working space for a month — go 50 GB or pick up a country-specific plan.

One QR code, one data pool, and the biggest five African networks in the background. Install before you fly and don't think about SIM kiosks for the rest of the trip.

eSIM FAQ

It spans a big slice of the continent. The headline list includes Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, Reunion, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia, with the partner footprint also reaching Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Ghana, Cameroon, Rwanda, the DRC, Malawi, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso and Botswana. If your overland route passes through a country not on the partner list, the eSIM goes dark until the next covered country, so check the exact list against your itinerary before you book.

It runs on a partnership of the five biggest footprints on the continent: Orange, Airtel, Cell C, Vodacom and MTN. MTN and Vodacom dominate Southern and East Africa, Airtel fills gaps across East and Central Africa, Orange covers the Francophone West and parts of Morocco, and Cell C backs up Southern Africa. Speeds reach 4G in cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Lagos and Dar es Salaam, dropping to 3G across most rural areas and some national parks.

Yes. One QR code handles the whole overland route, whether that is Cape Town to Victoria Falls or Nairobi down through Tanzania to Zanzibar. The eSIM auto-switches between the partner networks as you move and picks whichever one has the best signal, so you don't choose. When you cross a border, the line re-registers on the new country's partner carrier within a few minutes of you clearing it and toggling airplane mode off and on. The data pool is shared across the whole trip, not per country.

After purchase you get a confirmation email with your eSIM details within minutes. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi before you fly by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: the eSIM switches on with first data use once you reach a covered African country and clears tower registration. If you transit through Dubai or Doha, don't toggle data on, since the plan only starts counting when you hit an African partner tower, not in transit.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check the detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it's in the network or SIM settings. If both show eSIM support, you're good to scan the QR code.

It depends on your route. A 10-day safari plus Cape Town stay fits comfortably in 5 GB. A two-week overland Nairobi to Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro loop needs around 10 GB. A month-long Cape-to-Cairo classic run through six or more countries with heavy map use should start at 20 GB. If you're working remotely from a Nairobi or Cape Town co-working space for a month, go for 50 GB or a country-specific plan. WhatsApp and GPS apps like Uber and Bolt are constant background drains.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. Just remember the data pool is shared across the whole trip rather than per country, with a 30-day 10 GB plan being a popular choice and 20 GB suiting longer overland runs. Hotspotting in 4G cities like Johannesburg or Nairobi works well, but expect slower speeds out in rural areas and national parks where coverage drops to 3G.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a local voice number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's no barrier in Africa, where WhatsApp is the default comms channel for lodges, drivers and tour operators, and you can call or message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime on your data. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone and keep your usual number reachable.
