Description

Thailand has been running on mobile data for longer than most Asian destinations — Bangkok's street-food vendors moved to PromptPay QR codes years ago, and the Grab economy from Chiang Mai to Phuket is so well-established that negotiating a fare in person now feels retro. A Blikst Thailand eSIM runs on Advanced Info Service (AIS) at 4G / 5G speeds, the country's largest carrier by coverage and reach.

Where AIS covers well

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Hua Hin, and all the major islands have 4G / 5G. The highway networks linking them have continuous 4G. The deep south (Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani) has coverage but is subject to government travel advisories — check before going. Koh Phi Phi, Koh Tao, Koh Lanta, and Koh Lipe have solid 4G on the populated beaches and thinner signal at the far northern and southern tips. Mountain treks out of Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon National Park or Pai have 4G in towns and 3G on the passes. Khao Sok, Erawan, and Khao Yai national parks have signal near ranger stations and thin coverage in the forest interiors.

Cost vs. a local SIM

AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC all sell tourist SIMs at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Chiang Mai (CNX), and Phuket (HKT) airports. The counters are fast by regional standards (10–20 minutes) and tourist packages are aggressively priced. The case for an eSIM is convenience: load before you fly, skip the counter entirely, and have working data the moment you clear immigration. Home-carrier roaming for Thailand is typically $10/day.

Arrival at BKK, DMK, CNX, HKT, or USM

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the main international gateway; Don Mueang (DMK) handles most budget airlines; Chiang Mai (CNX), Phuket (HKT), and Koh Samui (USM) handle direct regional and some long-haul arrivals. Install the eSIM before leaving home. The line activates on AIS the moment your phone registers after landing. BKK's free Wi-Fi is fine but the arrivals hall walk is long — you'll want your own data before you reach the Airport Rail Link.

Apps that matter in Thailand

  • Grab: Dominant ride-share and food delivery. GrabBike is the fastest way through Bangkok traffic; GrabCar is the main taxi replacement in cities.
  • Bolt: A ride-share alternative, often cheaper at peak in Bangkok and Phuket.
  • LINE: Used for messaging by many Thais, tour operators, and some guesthouses. WhatsApp is more common for international-run operators.
  • Google Maps: Bangkok's complex skytrain (BTS), MRT, and boat routes are all mapped. Walking routes in the old city (Rattanakosin) are accurate.
  • Food delivery: GrabFood, LINE MAN, and FoodPanda all operate. LINE MAN has the widest small-vendor coverage in Bangkok.
  • 7-Eleven Thailand app: Ubiquitous 7-Elevens are a daily stop. The app handles loyalty and some bill payments. Tourists mostly skip it but worth knowing.
  • 12Go Asia: Buses, boats, and trains between cities and islands. Works cleanly over 4G.

Island and transfer notes

Ferries between Surat Thani mainland and Koh Samui / Koh Phangan / Koh Tao have signal at both ports and weaken mid-crossing. The speedboat ride from Krabi to Phi Phi or Phi Phi to Koh Lanta has intermittent signal. Overnight trains (Bangkok to Chiang Mai on the State Railway) have coverage on most of the route except tunnel sections and remote hill stretches. Download Netflix or Spotify offline content if you're on the 12-hour overnight.

Water, weather, and scam notes

Monsoon season varies: west coast (Phuket, Krabi) from May to October; east coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) from November to January. Flooded roads and cancelled speedboats are common in peak storm days — live weather matters. Scam-wise, "tourist prepaid SIMs" sold by non-official vendors outside airports sometimes don't work as advertised; sticking with AIS-branded kiosks (or an eSIM) avoids this.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A weekend in Bangkok: 2–3 GB. A one-week Bangkok + Chiang Mai classic: 5 GB. A two-week Bangkok + north + south island hop: 10 GB. A three-week full-country circuit: 20 GB. A month of remote work from Chiang Mai or Phuket: 20–50 GB. Digital nomads on longer stays (3–6 months) should consider either a local AIS SIM with long-term packages or stacking longer Blikst plans.

Install, fly into BKK, DMK, CNX, or HKT, and walk off the plane with Grab and Google Maps already live. The airport express or the tuk-tuk queue, not a SIM kiosk.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
