Description

Vietnam is one of those countries where a working data plan changes the whole tempo of the trip — Grab bikes in Hanoi arrive in four minutes, Google Translate's camera mode decodes a Phở menu, and the sleeper-bus driver from Hội An to Nha Trang tells you via Zalo exactly where to stand at the pickup. A Blikst Vietnam eSIM runs on MobiFone, one of the country's three major carriers, at 3G / 4G speeds across all 63 provinces.

Where MobiFone works best

Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Đà Nẵng, Hải Phòng, and Cần Thơ have blanket 4G. The coastal corridor from Đà Nẵng through Hội An and Nha Trang is strong. The Mekong Delta has solid 4G around Cần Thơ and most province capitals but thins on the smaller tributaries and island homestays near Bến Tre. Sapa and the Ha Giang Loop up in the far north have 4G in the main towns (Sapa, Hà Giang town, Đồng Văn) and 3G on the switchback passes — usable for maps, not for streaming. Ha Long Bay has signal near Bãi Cháy and on most cruise routes but expect dead zones inside the karst caves.

Cost vs. a local SIM

Vietnamese tourist SIMs are cheap and widely available at Tân Sơn Nhất (SGN), Nội Bài (HAN), and Đà Nẵng (DAD) airports — if you're prepared to deal with the kiosk markup and passport registration on arrival. The tradeoff: the eSIM loads before you fly and skips the jet-lagged haggling at the arrival hall. Home-carrier roaming for Vietnam is typically $10/day or punitive per-MB rates.

Airport arrival

Install the profile before you leave. SGN, HAN, and DAD all have Wi-Fi but it's captive-portal and slow at peak arrivals. The line activates once you're registered on MobiFone post-landing. If you're entering overland from Cambodia (Moc Bai), Laos (Lao Bao), or China (Dong Dang), expect a brief reconnection gap at the frontier.

Apps you'll use every day

  • Grab: The default for taxis, bike rides, and food delivery. GrabBike is the fastest way through Saigon or Hanoi traffic. Runs on live GPS, so data is constant.
  • Be: Vietnamese-owned ride-share alternative. Often cheaper than Grab at peak; coverage is strongest in HCMC and Hanoi.
  • Zalo: Vietnam's dominant messaging app. Tour operators, homestay hosts, and even bus companies default to it. Install it if you're staying longer than a few days.
  • Google Translate: Camera mode for menus is the single biggest data-to-experience multiplier. Download the Vietnamese offline pack as backup.
  • 12Go and Baolau: For buying sleeper bus, train, and ferry tickets. Both work cleanly over 4G.
  • Momo and VNPay: QR-code payments, dominant among locals. Tourists often can't sign up, but some markets and restaurants show only a Momo QR.

Ha Giang, Sapa, and the north

The Ha Giang Loop is one of Vietnam's best rides and one of the places your data will be most strained. Signal cuts out on the Ma Pi Leng Pass and in parts of the Dong Van Karst Plateau. Pre-download offline Google Maps of the whole loop before you leave Hà Giang town, and keep the homestay contacts saved offline. Sapa town has good signal; the trekking trails to Lao Chải and Tả Van villages have patchy 3G.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A weekend Hanoi or HCMC city break: 2 GB. One-week north-to-south fast hits (Hanoi → Ha Long → Hội An): 5 GB. Two-week classic route including Sapa or Ha Giang plus the coast: 10 GB. A full month backpacking or a Mekong slow-travel trip: 20 GB. Digital nomads in HCMC or Đà Nẵng working from cafés for a month should go 50 GB — Vietnamese café Wi-Fi is good but not a full-time substitute.

Install, fly into SGN, HAN, or DAD, and land with Grab and Google Translate already live. No SIM kiosk, no passport photocopy, just the ride into the city.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Vietnam eSIM runs on MobiFone, one of the country's three major carriers, at 3G and 4G speeds across all 63 provinces. You get blanket 4G in the big cities and along the coast, with 3G filling in on remote mountain passes. It is plenty for navigation, messaging, ride-hailing and translation, though it is not built for heavy streaming in the most rural corners.

Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Hai Phong and Can Tho all have blanket 4G, and the coastal corridor from Da Nang through Hoi An and Nha Trang is strong. The Mekong Delta is solid around Can Tho but thins on smaller tributaries and island homestays near Ben Tre. Up north, Sapa and the Ha Giang Loop have 4G in the main towns and 3G on the switchback passes. Ha Long Bay has signal near Bai Chay and on most cruise routes, but expect dead zones inside the karst caves.

Right after you buy, you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Install the profile by scanning the QR code provided, ideally before you fly. The line activates automatically once you land and register on MobiFone in Vietnam, so you arrive already connected. If you enter overland from Cambodia at Moc Bai, Laos at Lao Bao or China at Dong Dang, expect a brief reconnection gap at the border.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it is worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number, and on Android you will find it in the network settings. If in doubt, check before you travel rather than at the arrival hall.

It depends on your trip. A weekend city break in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is fine on 2 GB. A one-week, north-to-south run of fast hits such as Hanoi, Ha Long and Hoi An suits about 5 GB. A two-week classic route adding Sapa or Ha Giang plus the coast works on 10 GB. A full month backpacking or slow-travelling the Mekong is better on 20 GB, and digital nomads working from cafes for a month should go for 50 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. That is handy for working from a cafe in Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, where the local Wi-Fi is good but not always a full-time substitute. Just remember that hotspot use eats data faster, so size your plan accordingly if you plan to lean on it regularly.

This is a data plan, so it does not come with a Vietnamese phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a problem, as you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Zalo, Vietnam's dominant messaging app that hosts and bus companies default to. Because an eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone, keeping your usual number reachable.

Home-carrier roaming for Vietnam is typically around 10 dollars a day or punitive per-megabyte rates, which adds up fast. Local tourist SIMs are cheap and widely sold at Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai and Da Nang airports, but you face kiosk markups and passport registration on arrival. The eSIM loads before you fly and skips the jet-lagged haggling, so you land with Grab and Google Translate already live, no SIM kiosk or passport photocopy required.
