Description

Vanuatu is 83 islands strung across 1,300 kilometres of South Pacific — and the connection between your Port Vila hotel, your Tanna volcano transfer, and your interisland flight confirmation runs through the slim fibre of the local mobile networks. A Blikst Vanuatu eSIM runs on Digicel Vanuatu at 3G / 4G speeds, covering the main islands where nearly all travellers spend their time.

Where Digicel reaches

Port Vila (Efate) has consistent 4G and the surrounding Efate ring road is well covered. Luganville on Espiritu Santo — Vanuatu's second city — has 4G in town and 3G along the East Coast Road toward Champagne Beach and Million Dollar Point. Tanna has 3G near Lenakel and the Mount Yasur volcano access villages but drops to nothing in the ash plain near the crater. Pentecost, Ambrym, Malekula, and the outer Banks and Torres groups have spotty coverage at best — treat outer-island travel as functionally offline.

Cost vs. local SIM or roaming

Digicel sells tourist SIMs at Port Vila International (VLI) and in town. If you want calls and longer stays it's a reasonable option; the tradeoff is passport registration and wait time. For data-only travellers on short trips, Blikst loads before you leave home. Roaming rates from AU, NZ, UK, and US carriers treat Vanuatu as a premium zone — typically $5+ per MB or $15/day daily passes, which makes even a modest eSIM plan cheaper within 48 hours.

Arrival at Bauerfield (VLI)

Bauerfield (VLI) in Port Vila is the main international gateway. Install the eSIM before flying; arrival Wi-Fi is minimal. If you're flying in via Brisbane, Auckland, or Nadi, your home line stops charging roaming the moment you land. Santo-Pekoa (SON) on Espiritu Santo handles some international charters and all domestic Air Vanuatu flights — Digicel coverage is strong in the immediate airport area.

Apps travellers rely on

  • Facebook Messenger: Dominant for tour operators, guesthouses, and kava bars across the country. Many small businesses don't have websites — they have Facebook pages, updated weekly.
  • WhatsApp: Used by Australian and NZ-run resorts and dive operators (Santo's wreck diving scene runs on it).
  • Google Maps: Good for Efate ring road and Luganville town. Outer islands are sparsely mapped. Download offline maps of Efate and Santo before leaving home.
  • Air Vanuatu app: Domestic flights to Tanna, Santo, Malekula, and Pentecost. Schedules change frequently — check the morning of travel.
  • Weather apps: Cyclone season (November–April) is serious. The Vanuatu Meteorological Services posts updates to Facebook; an app like Windy is useful for sailors and divers.

Outer island and volcano notes

If Mount Yasur on Tanna is on your list, budget for the drive up to be offline and the crater rim itself to have zero signal. Pentecost land-diving season (April–June) happens in the island's interior where coverage drops out quickly once you leave the coast. For any outer-island trip — Epi, Malo, Aneityum — assume your Blikst line won't work and rely on the resort's satellite link if they have one.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A 4-day Port Vila stopover: 1–2 GB covers WhatsApp, maps, and a few volcano tour confirmations. A one-week Efate + Tanna combination: 3 GB. A two-week trip including Santo diving: 5 GB. A month of volunteer work or extended travel around the main islands: 10 GB, accepting that the outer islands will be offline regardless of plan size.

Install before you fly into VLI, land with a working line, and get straight to the resort transfer instead of the SIM counter. Vanuatu rewards arriving already set up — ni-Vanuatu time does not extend to your pickup driver.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Vanuatu eSIM runs on Digicel Vanuatu, the country's main mobile operator, at 3G and 4G speeds. You will not find 5G here, but across the main islands where nearly all travellers spend their time, Digicel's 4G is solid. Port Vila on Efate has consistent 4G, and the network reaches the surrounding Efate ring road well, which covers most of a typical trip.

Coverage follows Digicel's footprint on the main islands. Port Vila and the Efate ring road get consistent 4G. Luganville on Espiritu Santo has 4G in town and 3G along the East Coast Road toward Champagne Beach and Million Dollar Point. Tanna has 3G near Lenakel and the Mount Yasur access villages but nothing in the ash plain by the crater. Pentecost, Ambrym, Malekula and the outer Banks and Torres groups are spotty at best, so treat outer-island travel as functionally offline.

Right after you buy, you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Scan the QR code provided to install the eSIM on your phone, ideally before you fly, since arrival Wi-Fi at Bauerfield (VLI) is minimal. Activation is automatic and your line switches on when you land in Vanuatu, meaning you can head straight to your resort transfer instead of queuing at a SIM counter.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so do check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number, and on Android you check in the network settings. If you are unsure before travelling, it is worth verifying while you still have time to sort it out.

It depends on your trip. A four-day Port Vila stopover is comfortable on 1 to 2 GB for WhatsApp, maps and a few volcano tour confirmations. A one-week Efate and Tanna combination suits about 3 GB. A two-week trip including Santo diving fits around 5 GB. A month of volunteer work or extended travel around the main islands works on 10 GB, accepting that the outer islands will be offline regardless of how big your plan is.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. This is handy in Port Vila or Luganville town where Digicel's 4G is reliable. Just bear in mind that hotspotting uses data faster, and on the outer islands there simply is not enough signal to share, so plan your tethering around the well-covered main islands.

The Blikst Vanuatu eSIM is a data plan, so it does not include a local number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is no problem here, as Facebook Messenger dominates among tour operators, guesthouses and kava bars, while WhatsApp runs the Australian and NZ resort and dive scene. Both work over data, as do FaceTime and similar apps. Your eSIM is a separate digital line, so your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone.

For most short data-only trips, yes. Roaming rates from AU, NZ, UK and US carriers treat Vanuatu as a premium zone, typically $5 or more per MB or around $15 a day for daily passes, so even a modest eSIM plan pays for itself within 48 hours. Digicel does sell tourist SIMs at Port Vila International and in town, which suit calls or longer stays, but they involve passport registration and a wait, whereas Blikst loads before you leave home.
