Description

Uruguay flies under Argentina and Brazil's shadow but draws the kind of traveller who wants Montevideo's wind-blown Rambla, Colonia del Sacramento's cobbled old town, and Punta del Este's beaches without the South American chaos that sometimes comes with them. A Blikst Uruguay eSIM runs on Telefónica (Movistar Uruguay) at 3G / 4G speeds across the coast and the main interior routes.

Where Movistar covers well

Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia del Sacramento, Salto, and Paysandú all have consistent 4G. The Atlantic coast road east of Punta — through La Barra, José Ignacio, and out to Punta del Diablo and Cabo Polonio — has 4G in the towns and thins between them, especially near the Rocha dune fields. The interior — Tacuarembó, Rivera, the gaucho country — runs on 3G/4G mixed coverage with weaker signal on the Ruta 5 north stretches. Cabo Polonio itself is a protected area with deliberately limited infrastructure; expect minimal signal near the lighthouse.

Cost vs. a local SIM

Antel, Movistar, and Claro all sell prepaid SIMs at Carrasco International (MVD) and in Montevideo shops. Uruguay is actually one of the easier South American countries for SIM pickup — no deep registration process — but you'll still lose 20–30 minutes at the kiosk. Home-carrier roaming typically bills Uruguay at $10–$12/day. A Blikst plan for a week covers itself in two or three days of saved roaming.

Arrival at Carrasco (MVD) or Laguna del Sauce (PDP)

Most international arrivals are into Montevideo's Carrasco (MVD) airport. Direct flights to Punta del Este land at Laguna del Sauce (PDP), mostly from Buenos Aires, São Paulo, and Santiago. Install the eSIM before you leave. The Buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia or Montevideo is a common overland entry — your line activates on Uruguayan networks the moment you dock and clear customs.

Apps you'll actually use

  • Uber and Cabify: Both work in Montevideo, Punta del Este, and Colonia. Cabify is often slightly cheaper outside peak and has more professional drivers in Montevideo.
  • Google Maps: City-level detail is excellent; the coastal road and interior routes are well mapped. Waze is also heavily used for real-time traffic, especially on the Interbalnearia route between Montevideo and Punta.
  • STM Montevideo: The bus network app for Montevideo. Useful for the Rambla-to-centro corridor and the outer neighbourhoods.
  • Mercado Pago and PedidosYa: Mercado Pago handles payments (some tourist-facing vendors accept it); PedidosYa is the dominant food delivery and groceries app.
  • Abitab and Red Pagos: Local payment networks for topping up transport cards and some services. Most tourists won't register but maps for their locations are useful.

Coast, ferry, and Punta notes

The Buenos Aires–Colonia Buquebus crossing has signal at both ports and weakens mid-channel on the Río de la Plata. Punta del Este in summer (December to February) is dense and your network will be congested at peak beach hours — expect slower speeds around Playa Mansa and Playa Brava on holiday weekends. José Ignacio is quieter but coverage thins once you're up the coast toward La Pedrera.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A weekend in Montevideo: 1–2 GB. A one-week Montevideo + Colonia + Punta del Este combination: 3–5 GB. A two-week coastal trip including Cabo Polonio and Punta del Diablo: 5–10 GB (and most of your Cabo Polonio hours will be offline anyway). A month of remote work from Montevideo or Punta: 20 GB. Summer-season visitors around New Year's Eve should buffer up — network congestion on the Punta coast is noticeable.

Install, land at MVD or PDP, and start the Rambla wander already connected. Skip the kiosk, keep your home line active for SMS codes, and let the eSIM handle the rest.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Uruguay eSIM runs on Telefónica's Movistar Uruguay network (network provider: Telefonica), one of the country's main operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds across the coast and the main interior routes, so you'll have solid LTE in the cities and reliable data along the busy stretches you're most likely to travel.

Movistar covers Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia del Sacramento, Salto and Paysandú with consistent 4G. The Atlantic coast east of Punta — La Barra, José Ignacio, out to Punta del Diablo — has 4G in the towns but thins between them, especially near the Rocha dunes. The interior, like Tacuarembó and Rivera, is mixed 3G/4G with weaker signal on the northern Ruta 5. Cabo Polonio is a protected area with deliberately minimal signal near the lighthouse.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Install it before you leave home by scanning the QR code in your phone's settings to add the eSIM. Activation is automatic: the line switches on when you arrive in Uruguay — whether you land at Carrasco or Laguna del Sauce, or dock from the Buquebus ferry and clear customs.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can verify eSIM support under Settings > General > About by looking for an EID number; on Android, check the network or SIM settings. If in doubt, our compatibility list is the quickest way to be sure.

It depends on your trip. A weekend in Montevideo is comfortable on 1–2 GB. A one-week Montevideo, Colonia and Punta del Este combination suits about 3–5 GB. A two-week coastal trip taking in Cabo Polonio and Punta del Diablo runs 5–10 GB — and much of your Cabo Polonio time will be offline anyway. A month of remote work from Montevideo or Punta is better on around 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. Bear in mind that in summer, from December to February, the Punta del Este coast gets congested at peak beach hours — expect slower speeds around Playa Mansa and Playa Brava on holiday weekends and around New Year's Eve, so it's worth buffering your data a little for that season.

This is a data plan, so it's built for internet rather than traditional calls and texts. The good news is you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger, which is what most travellers use anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone — handy for keeping your usual number live to receive SMS verification codes.

Usually, yes. Home-carrier roaming typically bills Uruguay at around $10–$12 a day, so a Blikst week-long plan pays for itself in just two or three days of saved roaming. You can buy a prepaid Antel, Movistar or Claro SIM at Carrasco airport or in Montevideo — Uruguay is one of the easier countries for this — but you'll still lose 20–30 minutes at the kiosk. The eSIM skips that queue entirely.
