The Blikst Uruguay eSIM runs on Telefónica's Movistar Uruguay network (network provider: Telefonica), one of the country's main operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds across the coast and the main interior routes, so you'll have solid LTE in the cities and reliable data along the busy stretches you're most likely to travel.
Movistar covers Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia del Sacramento, Salto and Paysandú with consistent 4G. The Atlantic coast east of Punta — La Barra, José Ignacio, out to Punta del Diablo — has 4G in the towns but thins between them, especially near the Rocha dunes. The interior, like Tacuarembó and Rivera, is mixed 3G/4G with weaker signal on the northern Ruta 5. Cabo Polonio is a protected area with deliberately minimal signal near the lighthouse.
Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Install it before you leave home by scanning the QR code in your phone's settings to add the eSIM. Activation is automatic: the line switches on when you arrive in Uruguay — whether you land at Carrasco or Laguna del Sauce, or dock from the Buquebus ferry and clear customs.
Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can verify eSIM support under Settings > General > About by looking for an EID number; on Android, check the network or SIM settings. If in doubt, our compatibility list is the quickest way to be sure.
It depends on your trip. A weekend in Montevideo is comfortable on 1–2 GB. A one-week Montevideo, Colonia and Punta del Este combination suits about 3–5 GB. A two-week coastal trip taking in Cabo Polonio and Punta del Diablo runs 5–10 GB — and much of your Cabo Polonio time will be offline anyway. A month of remote work from Montevideo or Punta is better on around 20 GB.
Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. Bear in mind that in summer, from December to February, the Punta del Este coast gets congested at peak beach hours — expect slower speeds around Playa Mansa and Playa Brava on holiday weekends and around New Year's Eve, so it's worth buffering your data a little for that season.
This is a data plan, so it's built for internet rather than traditional calls and texts. The good news is you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger, which is what most travellers use anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone — handy for keeping your usual number live to receive SMS verification codes.
Usually, yes. Home-carrier roaming typically bills Uruguay at around $10–$12 a day, so a Blikst week-long plan pays for itself in just two or three days of saved roaming. You can buy a prepaid Antel, Movistar or Claro SIM at Carrasco airport or in Montevideo — Uruguay is one of the easier countries for this — but you'll still lose 20–30 minutes at the kiosk. The eSIM skips that queue entirely.
