Description

The UAE packs Dubai's tower skyline, Abu Dhabi's museums, Sharjah's heritage quarter, Al Ain's oases, and Ras Al Khaimah's mountains into a country you can drive across in three hours. It's also one of the world's most connected places — and still a place where US and European roaming bills run $10–$12 per day and where VoIP apps (WhatsApp calls, FaceTime Video) have historically been restricted on consumer plans. A Blikst UAE eSIM runs on Du with 4G / 5G coverage across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and the Al Ain oasis region.

Where Du's network runs well

5G covers central Dubai (Downtown, Marina, JBR, Business Bay, DIFC), Abu Dhabi (Corniche, Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas), Sharjah city, and increasingly Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah urban zones. 4G is everywhere else at motorway standard. E11 Sheikh Zayed Road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is consistent 5G for most of the run. The road to Al Ain, the Jebel Hafeet climb, and the Hatta mountain road are covered. The Empty Quarter desert starts once you push past Liwa — expect 4G in settlements and thinner coverage in the dunes themselves.

VoIP calling in the UAE — important to know

The UAE's telecom regulations have historically restricted consumer VoIP (WhatsApp voice/video calls, FaceTime Video, Skype calls). Rules have evolved — some services now work on some plans, some don't. Experience on a visitor eSIM can vary. Du's own BOTIM / C'Me services are officially licensed VoIP options. Text messaging on WhatsApp/iMessage works normally. For calls, check current conditions or use BOTIM as a backup. This is a UAE quirk, not a plan limitation.

Cost compared with a local SIM or roaming

Du, e& (Etisalat), and Virgin Mobile all sell prepaid visitor SIMs at DXB and AUH, and they work well — but registration requires your passport and often fingerprints, and queues at arrivals can run long. Roaming on US, UK, European, and Asian home carriers typically sits around $10–$12 per day. A Blikst plan on Du's 5G network costs less than a couple of roaming days and removes the arrivals-hall queue.

Arriving at DXB, AUH, SHJ, or RKT

Install the eSIM over home Wi-Fi before you fly. Dubai (DXB), Dubai World Central (DWC), Abu Dhabi (AUH), Sharjah (SHJ), and Ras Al Khaimah (RKT) all have solid airport Wi-Fi — doing setup at home is still faster. When you land and switch off airplane mode, the Du line registers automatically. Layovers in DXB or AUH benefit: even a 4-hour transit gives you working maps, boarding push notifications, and WhatsApp messaging without resorting to the free-terminal Wi-Fi.

What you'll actually use data for here

  • Careem and Uber: Both operate across the UAE. Careem is owned by Uber but runs independently and often has broader supply; both use GPS heavily.
  • RTA apps (Dubai Metro, NOL, Parking): Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority runs metro, bus, tram, parking, and Salik (toll). The NOL card is the transit payment standard.
  • Talabat, Deliveroo, Zomato, Careem Food: Food delivery is how a lot of the UAE eats. Apps are data-light but constant.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: Accepted almost universally at retail, restaurants, taxis. Cash is rare.
  • Desert and adventure apps: If you're doing dune bashing in Liwa or Hatta, your guide handles navigation. For self-drive to Jebel Hafeet or Hatta, Google Maps and Waze are standard.

Summer heat and phone management

UAE summers (June–September) are 40–50°C routinely. Phones overheat fast in direct sun — Apple devices shut down above 35°C sustained. Keep it shaded, use car AC vents, and don't leave it on the dashboard. Your eSIM works through all of that; your hardware needs help. Winter (November–March) is mild and pleasant; that's high tourist season and network load is higher but still handles well.

Plan sizing for UAE trips

A DXB layover: 1 GB. A 3-day Dubai weekend: 1–3 GB. A week combining Dubai, Abu Dhabi and a desert night: 5 GB. Two-week family visits with resort Wi-Fi carrying streaming: 10 GB. Expo-era visits, business contracts, or GITEX attendees running video calls back to Europe or Asia: 20 GB. Remote workers on UAE Virtual Working visas for a month: 50 GB or higher.

Install before you fly, land on 5G, and clear DXB immigration with your Careem ride already ordered. The first Downtown skyline view from Sheikh Zayed Road is more interesting than a SIM-shop queue.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst UAE eSIM runs on Du, one of the country's main mobile operators, with 4G and 5G speeds. You get 5G across central Dubai (Downtown, Marina, JBR, Business Bay, DIFC), Abu Dhabi (Corniche, Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas), Sharjah city, and increasingly Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah urban zones. 4G is everywhere else at motorway standard, so you stay connected the whole way.

Du covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and the Al Ain oasis region. The E11 Sheikh Zayed Road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi holds consistent 5G for most of the run, and the road to Al Ain, the Jebel Hafeet climb and the Hatta mountain road are all covered. The one honest weak spot is the Empty Quarter desert past Liwa, where you'll get 4G in settlements but thinner coverage out in the dunes themselves.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Install it by scanning the QR code while you're still on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic: the Du line registers itself when you land in the UAE and switch off airplane mode, so you have working maps and messaging the moment you clear immigration. There's nothing to queue for at arrivals.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. The phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it's in your network or SIM settings. If in doubt, check before you travel.

It depends on your trip. A DXB layover is fine on 1 GB, and a three-day Dubai weekend suits 1 to 3 GB. A week combining Dubai, Abu Dhabi and a desert night is comfortable on 5 GB, while two-week family visits relying on resort Wi-Fi for streaming sit around 10 GB. Business trips or GITEX attendees running video calls back to Europe or Asia want 20 GB, and remote workers staying a month should plan on 50 GB or more.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported on the Blikst UAE eSIM, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It draws from the same data allowance as your normal browsing, so heavier hotspot use such as video calls or streaming will get through your plan faster. For a working trip where you tether often, lean towards a larger plan.

These are data plans, so calls and messages go over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, iMessage or FaceTime. One UAE quirk to know: the country has historically restricted consumer VoIP calling, so WhatsApp voice or FaceTime Video may be hit or miss on a visitor eSIM. Text messaging works normally, and Du's licensed BOTIM and C'Me apps are a reliable backup for calls. Your eSIM is a separate digital line, so your home SIM and number can stay in the phone.

Usually, yes. Roaming on US, UK, European and Asian home carriers typically runs around 10 to 12 dollars a day in the UAE, so a Blikst plan on Du's 5G network costs less than a couple of roaming days. Local prepaid visitor SIMs from Du, e& and Virgin Mobile work well, but registration needs your passport and often fingerprints, and arrivals-hall queues can run long. The eSIM skips that queue entirely.
