Description

Trinidad and Tobago is a two-for-one — Trinidad's industrial, food-and-Carnival capital and Tobago's quieter reef-and-rainforest sibling, connected by a 20-minute inter-island flight or a 3-hour ferry. A Blikst T&T eSIM runs on Digicel at 3G / 4G speeds across both islands, covering Port of Spain, San Fernando, Scarborough, and the main tourist corridors.

Trinidad coverage

Port of Spain, Chaguanas, San Fernando, and the Eastern Main Road corridor have consistent 4G. The North Coast (Maracas, Las Cuevas, Blanchisseuse) has 4G to the towns and 3G on the forested switchbacks between. The Central Range and the oilfields around Pointe-à-Pierre are well covered. The eastern tip toward Toco and Matelot thins to 3G. The Nariva Swamp and Caroni wetlands — if you're on a late-afternoon scarlet ibis tour — have 3G near the launch points and weaker coverage out in the mangroves.

Tobago coverage

Scarborough, Crown Point (where the airport is), and the southwest corner (Pigeon Point, Store Bay, Buccoo) have solid 4G. The leeward coast road to Castara and Charlotteville has 4G in the villages and thins on the stretches between. Argyle Falls, Main Ridge Forest Reserve, and Speyside on the windward side have 3G near the settlements and patches of no coverage in the rainforest itself.

Cost vs. a local SIM

Digicel and bmobile sell SIMs at Piarco (POS) and ANR Robinson (TAB) airports. Registration is straightforward but takes 20–30 minutes. Home-carrier Caribbean roaming runs $10–$15/day. A Blikst plan for a one-week trip typically costs the equivalent of two or three days of roaming.

Arrival at Piarco (POS) or ANR Robinson (TAB)

Most international arrivals land at Piarco (POS) outside Port of Spain. Tobago's ANR Robinson (TAB) handles some direct flights from London, Toronto, and the US east coast, plus heavy Caribbean Airlines traffic. Install the eSIM before you fly. The inter-island ferry (Port of Spain to Scarborough) runs twice daily in each direction; signal is strong at both ports and drops somewhat mid-channel.

Apps you'll actually use

  • WhatsApp: The default for guesthouse communication, tour bookings, taxi drivers, and even Carnival costume section coordinators.
  • TTRideShare and PinkCab: Local ride-share alternatives to the international apps. Uber does not operate in Trinidad and Tobago — this catches travellers out regularly.
  • Google Maps: Trinidad and Tobago road networks are well mapped; rainforest trails less so. Download offline maps for Main Ridge and the Northern Range.
  • Trinbago Pan: Steelpan events, panyards, and practice schedules during Carnival season. If you're there for Panorama, this is the insider app.
  • NCC and Carnival Commission apps: Official fete listings, J'ouvert routes, and Carnival Monday/Tuesday parade bands.
  • Weather apps: Hurricane season runs June to November. T&T sits south of the main hurricane belt but gets serious tropical weather — the Trinidad & Tobago Meteorological Service posts the authoritative alerts.

Carnival-specific notes

If you're arriving for Carnival (the week before Ash Wednesday), expect network congestion in Port of Spain during J'ouvert, Monday band parade, and Tuesday's Parade of the Bands. Speeds drop during peak crowd hours along the Savannah stage. This is the network being overloaded, not the eSIM — plan to back up photos overnight rather than live.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A Carnival long weekend: 3–5 GB (heavy video capture and uploads). A one-week Trinidad-only business or family trip: 3 GB. A one-week Tobago-only beach trip: 3 GB. A two-week two-island combination: 5–10 GB. A month of work or research based in Port of Spain: 20 GB.

Install before you fly into POS or TAB, land with a working Digicel line, and skip the SIM counter. For Carnival arrivals especially — the time you lose on a SIM registration is time you're not in a fete.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
