Description

Togo is a narrow sliver of West Africa — a 50-kilometre coastline at one end, a hilly forested border with Ghana and Burkina Faso at the other — and most travellers transit through it en route between Accra and Cotonou. A Blikst Togo eSIM runs on Moov Togo at 3G / 4G speeds, covering Lomé, the coast, and the main RN1 north-south corridor through the country.

Where Moov Togo reaches

Lomé, Aného, Kpalimé, Atakpamé, Sokodé, Kara, and Dapaong all have 4G in the centre and 3G at the edges. The RN1 (the main highway running north–south from Lomé to the Burkinabé border) has consistent signal in towns and thins between them. Koutammakou (the UNESCO-listed Tamberma takienta tower-house region north of Kara) has 3G near Nadoba village and drops out deeper into the compound valleys. The Kpalimé region — Mount Agou, the waterfalls of Womé and Kpimé — has 4G in Kpalimé town and 3G on the forested approaches. The Togolese Plateaux (coffee and cocoa country) have mixed 3G/4G.

Cost vs. a local SIM

Moov and Yas (formerly Togocel) both sell local SIMs in Lomé. Registration requires passport registration and often a thumbprint. Home-carrier roaming rates for Togo are typically $10–$15/day. A Blikst plan sized to your stay undercuts that quickly.

Arrival at Gnassingbé Eyadéma (LFW)

LFW in Lomé is Togo's only international airport and handles direct flights from Paris, Brussels, Casablanca, Addis Ababa, and various West African hubs. Install the eSIM before you fly. The airport is small and efficient; the line activates on Moov once you're outside customs. If you're entering overland from Ghana (Aflao–Lomé border — one of the most-used West African land crossings) or Benin (Hillakondji), expect the network hand-off to happen within minutes of crossing.

Apps for Togo travel

  • WhatsApp: The default for guesthouse communication, Kpalimé hiking guides, and Koutammakou cultural tour operators.
  • Gozem: West African ride-hailing app active in Lomé. Uber and Bolt do not operate in Togo — Gozem is the main option for both cars and motos.
  • Moov Money / Flooz: Mobile money networks. Tourists rarely register but many local services quote prices in MoMo transfer terms.
  • Google Maps: Lomé and the RN1 are well mapped. Rural tracks in Koutammakou and the Plateaux Region are thin — supplement with Maps.me with offline regions.
  • Google Translate: French is the official language; Ewé, Kabiye, and other local languages are widely spoken. Offline French pack is useful.
  • XE or Revolut: West African CFA franc (XOF) is pegged to the euro, but if you're coming from Ghana (cedi) or Nigeria (naira) the conversion rate matters.

Coast, Kpalimé, and north notes

Lomé's beachfront is walkable from the city centre and has continuous signal. The Grand Marché and the Fetish Market at Akodessawa both have 4G. Kpalimé, two hours north, is the country's hiking hub — the waterfall trails at Womé and Kpimé have signal near the entrances and fade on the approaches. Koutammakou, a long day's drive north past Kara, is worth the trip for the Tamberma architecture but plan on a patchy-to-offline day of driving between the signal zones. If you're crossing the northern border into Burkina Faso, check current security advisories — the situation has varied recently.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A day of transit through Lomé between Accra and Cotonou: 500 MB–1 GB. A weekend in Lomé and Togoville: 1–2 GB. A one-week Lomé + Kpalimé circuit: 3 GB. A two-week north-south traverse including Koutammakou: 5 GB. A month of NGO or business work based in Lomé: 10–20 GB.

Install, fly into LFW or cross from Aflao, and land with Gozem ready to book a moto or a car into the city. Skip the kiosk, keep your home line active for codes, and start the West African coast run with working data from minute one.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Togo eSIM runs on Moov Togo, one of the country's main operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with 4G in the centre of the larger towns and 3G at their edges and on rural approaches. It is a solid pairing for the coast, Lomé and the main north-south corridor, with the slower 3G fallback keeping you connected where the network thins out.

Moov Togo reaches Lomé, Aného, Kpalimé, Atakpamé, Sokodé, Kara and Dapaong, with 4G in town centres and 3G at the edges. The RN1 highway has consistent signal in towns and thins between them. Be honest with yourself about the remote spots: Koutammakou drops out deeper in the compound valleys, the Womé and Kpimé waterfall trails fade on the forested approaches, and the long drive north past Kara can be patchy to offline.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Install it on your phone by scanning the QR code provided before you fly. Activation is automatic: the line activates on Moov when you arrive in Togo, whether you land at Lomé airport or cross overland from Ghana at Aflao, where the hand-off usually happens within minutes of crossing.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. On an iPhone you can verify eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it is in your network settings. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked rather than locked to a single home network.

It depends on your trip. A day of transit through Lomé between Accra and Cotonou needs roughly 500 MB to 1 GB. A weekend in Lomé and Togoville suits 1 to 2 GB. A one-week Lomé and Kpalimé circuit is comfortable on about 3 GB. A two-week north-south traverse including Koutammakou works on around 5 GB, while a month of NGO or business work based in Lomé is better on 10 to 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. Bear in mind you are sharing the same 3G or 4G signal, so a hotspot works best in Lomé and the town centres where coverage is strongest, and will feel slower out on the RN1 between towns or on the forested approaches around Kpalimé.

This is a data plan, so it does not come with a local Togolese phone number for traditional calls or texts. Instead you call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, which is the default for guesthouses, Kpalimé hiking guides and Koutammakou tour operators, or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can keep your home SIM in the phone to receive bank codes and security texts on your usual number.

Usually, yes. Home-carrier roaming rates for Togo typically run around $10 to $15 a day, and a Blikst plan sized to your stay undercuts that quickly. A local SIM from Moov or Yas, formerly Togocel, is sold in Lomé but requires passport registration and often a thumbprint. The eSIM skips the kiosk entirely: you install before you fly and land with working data from minute one.
