Description

Tanzania is where a lot of travellers first understand why a working data plan changes a safari — Ngorongoro lodge managers text gate times, Zanzibar boat captains send tide updates, and the Kilimanjaro porter team coordinates gear pickups via WhatsApp the night before you summit. A Blikst Tanzania eSIM runs on Airtel Tanzania at 3G / 4G speeds across the safari circuits, the coast, and Zanzibar.

Where Airtel works and where it doesn't

Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, and Dodoma have consistent 4G. The northern safari circuit (Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro → Serengeti) has 4G around the gates and lodges and drops to 3G or nothing inside the Serengeti proper — particularly in the Western and Northern Corridors during migration season. Ngorongoro Crater rim has signal near the lodges and on the descent road; the crater floor itself is weak. Zanzibar (Stone Town, Nungwi, Paje, Jambiani) has consistent 4G along the populated coast; interior roads are 3G. Kilimanjaro trekking routes lose signal above Horombo and Shira Camp.

Cost vs. local SIM

Airtel, Vodacom, and Tigo all sell tourist SIMs at Julius Nyerere International (DAR), Kilimanjaro International (JRO), and Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ). Tanzania requires passport registration and biometric capture for SIM purchase — expect 30–45 minutes at the counter, longer during peak hours. A Blikst eSIM skips that. Home-carrier roaming for Tanzania is typically $10–$15/day.

Arrival at JRO, DAR, or ZNZ

JRO is the standard gateway for safari and Kilimanjaro travellers — closest to Arusha and Moshi. DAR is for coast and southern circuit visitors; ZNZ for Zanzibar direct flights. Install the eSIM before you fly. The line registers on Airtel the moment your phone connects on landing. Inter-island flights between Dar and Zanzibar (ferry or plane) keep you on the same network.

Apps used on Tanzanian trips

  • WhatsApp: The operating system of Tanzanian safari and coastal tourism. Lodges, tour operators, Kilimanjaro outfits, and Zanzibar boat captains all run on it.
  • Uber and Bolt: Both work in Dar es Salaam and (more limited) Arusha. Bolt has the bigger driver base.
  • Google Maps: Main roads well mapped; park interior tracks sparse. Download offline maps for Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Zanzibar before leaving home.
  • M-Pesa (Vodacom) and Airtel Money: Mobile money is ubiquitous. Tourists rarely register but you'll see every price quoted in shilling-via-MoMo terms.
  • TANAPA: The Tanzania National Parks portal. Permits, entry fees, and regulations.
  • Windy and Windfinder: For Zanzibar kitesurfers, Paje and Jambiani wind reports are daily checks.

Safari and Kilimanjaro notes

Treat any full day inside the Serengeti, Ruaha, Selous (Nyerere), or Katavi as functionally offline. Lodges almost universally have Wi-Fi now (often Starlink or VSAT) but game drives are data-free hours. On Kilimanjaro, every route — Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai — loses signal above the rainforest band (around 3,500 m) and doesn't recover until you descend. Download any routines, photos-to-backup, or messages-to-send while at gate camps.

Zanzibar-specific notes

Stone Town's old alleys have signal but the stone walls weaken it indoors. Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, and Jambiani have 4G on the beaches. Boat trips to Mnemba Atoll, Prison Island, or Chumbe have signal near shore and thinner coverage out at the reef. The Zanzibar–Pemba ferry crossing has gaps mid-channel.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-week Kilimanjaro trek (Marangu or Machame): 3 GB — most of your hours will be offline. A one-week northern safari: 5 GB. A two-week safari + Zanzibar combination: 10 GB. A three-week grand tour (southern circuit, northern circuit, Zanzibar): 20 GB. A month of volunteer work or research from Arusha or Stone Town: 20–50 GB depending on workload.

Install before you fly. Land at JRO or DAR with WhatsApp connected to your Kilimanjaro outfit or safari guide, and get straight on the road to Arusha or the boat to Stone Town.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Tanzania eSIM runs on Airtel Tanzania (network provider: Airtel) at 3G and 4G speeds. That gives you coverage across the safari circuits, the coast and Zanzibar. You'll get consistent 4G in the main hubs and drop to 3G in more remote areas, which is plenty for WhatsApp, maps, ride apps and keeping in touch with your guides and lodges.

Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza and Dodoma have consistent 4G. The northern safari circuit has 4G around the gates and lodges but drops to 3G or nothing inside the Serengeti, especially the Western and Northern Corridors during migration. Ngorongoro's crater rim has signal near the lodges; the crater floor is weak. Zanzibar's populated coast has 4G, with interior roads on 3G. Kilimanjaro routes lose signal above Horombo and Shira Camp.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code provided to install it on your phone. Install it before you fly. Activation is automatic: the line registers on Airtel the moment your phone connects on landing at JRO, DAR or ZNZ, so you arrive already connected and ready to message your guide or boat captain.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone, look under Settings, General, About for an EID number; on Android, check your network or SIM settings for eSIM support. If you see an EID, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A one-week Kilimanjaro trek on Marangu or Machame needs about 3 GB, since most hours are offline. A one-week northern safari suits roughly 5 GB. A two-week safari and Zanzibar combination is comfortable on 10 GB, and a three-week grand tour across the southern circuit, northern circuit and Zanzibar fits about 20 GB. A month of volunteer work or research from Arusha or Stone Town runs 20 to 50 GB depending on workload.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It's handy at gate camps and lodges for backing up safari photos or sending messages. Just remember coverage shapes the experience: a full day inside the Serengeti or on Kilimanjaro above the rainforest band is effectively offline, so do your uploads while you still have signal.

This is a data plan, so it doesn't come with a local phone number for traditional calls or texts. In practice that's fine in Tanzania, where WhatsApp is the operating system of safari and coastal tourism, used by lodges, tour operators and boat captains. You can call and message over the internet using WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in your phone.

Usually, yes. Home-carrier roaming for Tanzania is typically 10 to 15 dollars a day, which adds up fast on a longer trip. Local tourist SIMs from Airtel, Vodacom and Tigo are sold at the airports, but Tanzania requires passport registration and biometric capture, so expect 30 to 45 minutes at the counter, longer at peak times. A Blikst eSIM skips all that and has you connected the moment you land.
