I used to have 3 mobile but the internet connection was not the best, that’s why I started to use Blikst and I find it very useful
The Blikst Tanzania eSIM runs on Airtel Tanzania (network provider: Airtel) at 3G and 4G speeds. That gives you coverage across the safari circuits, the coast and Zanzibar. You'll get consistent 4G in the main hubs and drop to 3G in more remote areas, which is plenty for WhatsApp, maps, ride apps and keeping in touch with your guides and lodges.
Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza and Dodoma have consistent 4G. The northern safari circuit has 4G around the gates and lodges but drops to 3G or nothing inside the Serengeti, especially the Western and Northern Corridors during migration. Ngorongoro's crater rim has signal near the lodges; the crater floor is weak. Zanzibar's populated coast has 4G, with interior roads on 3G. Kilimanjaro routes lose signal above Horombo and Shira Camp.
Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code provided to install it on your phone. Install it before you fly. Activation is automatic: the line registers on Airtel the moment your phone connects on landing at JRO, DAR or ZNZ, so you arrive already connected and ready to message your guide or boat captain.
Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone, look under Settings, General, About for an EID number; on Android, check your network or SIM settings for eSIM support. If you see an EID, you're good to go.
It depends on your trip. A one-week Kilimanjaro trek on Marangu or Machame needs about 3 GB, since most hours are offline. A one-week northern safari suits roughly 5 GB. A two-week safari and Zanzibar combination is comfortable on 10 GB, and a three-week grand tour across the southern circuit, northern circuit and Zanzibar fits about 20 GB. A month of volunteer work or research from Arusha or Stone Town runs 20 to 50 GB depending on workload.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It's handy at gate camps and lodges for backing up safari photos or sending messages. Just remember coverage shapes the experience: a full day inside the Serengeti or on Kilimanjaro above the rainforest band is effectively offline, so do your uploads while you still have signal.
This is a data plan, so it doesn't come with a local phone number for traditional calls or texts. In practice that's fine in Tanzania, where WhatsApp is the operating system of safari and coastal tourism, used by lodges, tour operators and boat captains. You can call and message over the internet using WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in your phone.
Usually, yes. Home-carrier roaming for Tanzania is typically 10 to 15 dollars a day, which adds up fast on a longer trip. Local tourist SIMs from Airtel, Vodacom and Tigo are sold at the airports, but Tanzania requires passport registration and biometric capture, so expect 30 to 45 minutes at the counter, longer at peak times. A Blikst eSIM skips all that and has you connected the moment you land.
