The Blikst Sri Lanka eSIM runs on Mobitel, the mobile arm of Sri Lanka Telecom and one of the island's main operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with 4G across the bigger towns and 3G filling in on the harder-to-reach stretches. It covers Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura and the main A-road spine, which is exactly where most travellers spend their time.
Colombo (including Bandaranaike airport at Katunayake), Kandy, Galle, Matara, Negombo, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Jaffna all get 4G. The hill country towns like Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Haputale and Hatton have 4G, but the winding sections between them drop to 3G. The Bentota-to-Hambantota coast is well covered, and east-coast centres such as Arugam Bay and Trincomalee have 4G. Be honest with yourself about the national parks: Yala, Wilpattu, Udawalawe, Minneriya and Horton Plains have signal at the gates but offline stretches inside.
Right after you buy, you get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: turn off data roaming on your home line first, then when you land at Bandaranaike (CMB) in Katunayake and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst profile registers on Mobitel by itself. Arrivals at Jaffna (JAF) or Mattala (HRI) follow the same pattern once a Sri Lankan tower picks up your phone.
Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it is worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable. On an iPhone, look under Settings then General then About for an EID number; on Android, check the network or SIM settings. If you can find an EID and your handset is unlocked, you are almost certainly good to go.
A one-week south-coast beach trip sits comfortably on 3 GB if you use hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Two weeks taking in the cultural triangle, the hill country and the south coast wants 5 to 10 GB. A three-week classic tour that adds the east coast or Jaffna should go for 10 GB. Remote workers basing in Colombo, Galle or Weligama for a month should size 20 GB or higher, since cafe Wi-Fi is good but wobbles during afternoon power cuts.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion's phone. It is handy for booking the scenic Kandy-to-Ella train through sites like 12go, or for keeping a tablet online at your Galle Fort hotel. Just remember that hotspotting pulls from the same data allowance, so a video call or a few map downloads will eat into your plan faster than light browsing on the phone alone.
This is a data-only plan, so it does not come with a local Sri Lankan phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a problem, because safari operators in Yala and Wilpattu, boutique hotels in Galle Fort and homestays in Ella all coordinate over WhatsApp anyway. You can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Your eSIM is a separate digital line, so your physical home SIM can stay in the phone and keep your usual number.
Most US and European carriers charge around $8 to $12 a day for Sri Lanka roaming, so a Blikst eSIM on Mobitel undercuts that significantly over a two- or three-week trip. Local Mobitel, Dialog or Airtel SIMs at the airport are genuinely cheap, and Sri Lanka is one of the places where buying one for a longer stay is practical. The eSIM's real edge is no queue, no passport registration and instant activation, which for a 10 to 14 day trip usually wins.
