Description

Slovenia packs Alpine, Mediterranean, karst, and Pannonian landscapes into an area the size of New Jersey, which means a week of driving here will take you from Lake Bled to the Piran coast to the Postojna caves without repeating terrain. A Blikst Slovenia eSIM runs on Telemach's 4G / 5G network. Telemach is one of the country's three national operators and has strong urban coverage plus respectable reach into the Julian Alps and the Karst plateau.

Where Telemach's coverage works best

Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Koper, and the coastal strip from Portorož to Izola all have 5G. The A1 and A2 motorways hold strong 4G the whole way through. Lake Bled, Bohinj, and the lower reaches of Triglav National Park have 4G in and around the villages; the moment you start climbing toward Vogel, Mangart, or the Seven Lakes Valley, expect signal to come and go. The Soča valley — Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin — is well-covered along the main road but drops in the side gorges. Postojna Cave's interior is (unsurprisingly) offline, but the cave entrance and visitor centre are fine.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a Telekom Slovenije SIM

EU travellers almost always have Slovenia included in their home roaming plan under the EU fair-use rules — check before you buy anything. For UK, US, Australian, and other non-EU visitors, Slovenia typically sits in a $10-ish per-day roaming tier. A Blikst plan on Telemach undercuts that substantially and doesn't need the shop visit and ID registration a local SIM requires.

Arrival at Ljubljana (LJU) or Trieste (TRS)

Install the profile before you fly. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik is a small, manageable airport — the Telemach line registers before you reach the bus stop for the Flixbus into town. Many travellers actually fly into Trieste, Venice, Klagenfurt, or Zagreb and drive in; the eSIM stays inactive until a Slovenian tower picks it up, which happens within a kilometre or two of the border. The crossing from Italy at Fernetti / Fernetiči is the most common, and the handoff is clean.

Local apps and data habits

  • Google Maps and Waze: Both work well. Slovenia is small enough that offline maps aren't strictly necessary, but the Triglav trail network is better served by specialised maps.
  • PZS / Planinska zveza Slovenije: The Alpine Association of Slovenia's hut and trail app is the standard reference for mountain huts (koče) — bookings, seasonal openings, and weather.
  • Arriva and Slovenske železnice: Intercity bus and train timetables. Most bookings are done in-app or at ticket windows.
  • Bolt: Ljubljana has Bolt coverage; outside the capital, taxis are more common and usually pre-booked by phone or at the stand.
  • Weather: ARSO's meteo app is the official Slovenian forecast — worth installing if you're heading into Triglav, where weather turns fast.

Plan sizing by trip length

A long weekend split between Ljubljana and Bled works on 1–3 GB. A one-week loop — Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj, Soča valley, Piran — wants 5 GB, especially if you're using navigation constantly on winding mountain roads. Two weeks that add Logarska Dolina, the Karst wine region, and a Maribor detour fit 10 GB. Remote workers basing out of Ljubljana or a coastal apartment for a month benefit from 20 GB.

Good to know

Slovenia uses the euro, contactless payments are universal, and parking in old towns (Ljubljana, Piran, Bled) is almost always managed through the EasyPark app, which needs live data to start and stop sessions. A working eSIM saves you from feeding unfamiliar coins into parking meters.

Install at home, cross the border or land at LJU, and the Telemach line comes up before you're through baggage claim.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Slovenia eSIM runs on Telemach's network, one of the country's three national operators. You get 4G and 5G speeds, with strong coverage across the cities and good reach into the mountains too. Telemach has solid urban performance plus respectable presence in the Julian Alps and the Karst plateau, so you stay connected across most of the terrain you'll cover on a typical Slovenia trip.

Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje, Koper and the coast from Portoroz to Izola all have 5G, and the A1 and A2 motorways hold strong 4G throughout. Lake Bled, Bohinj and the lower Triglav valleys get 4G around the villages, but signal comes and goes as you climb toward Vogel, Mangart or the Seven Lakes Valley. The Soca valley is well covered on the main road but drops in the side gorges, and Postojna Cave's interior is offline though the entrance is fine.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes just minutes. Install the profile before you fly by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: the line stays inactive until a Slovenian tower picks it up, which happens at the airport or within a kilometre or two of the border if you drive in. Land at Ljubljana and the Telemach line comes up before you're through baggage claim.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. To check generally, on an iPhone go to Settings > General > About and look for an EID number, or check the network settings on Android. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you're unsure, the compatibility list is the quickest way to be certain before you buy.

It depends on your trip. A long weekend split between Ljubljana and Bled works on 1 to 3 GB. A one-week loop taking in Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj, the Soca valley and Piran wants around 5 GB, especially with constant navigation on winding mountain roads. Two weeks adding Logarska Dolina, the Karst wine region and a Maribor detour fit 10 GB. Remote workers basing in Ljubljana or on the coast for a month benefit from 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It's handy for remote work from a Ljubljana cafe or a coastal apartment, or for keeping the family online on the road between Bled and Piran. Just remember that hotspotting uses the same data allowance as your phone, so pick a plan size that comfortably covers everyone you intend to connect.

Blikst plans are data plans, so they don't come with a local Slovenian phone number for traditional calls or texts. Instead you call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar, which work fine on Telemach's 4G and 5G. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone, ready to receive the odd important call or verification code while you travel.

It usually is for non-EU visitors. EU travellers almost always have Slovenia included in their home plan under EU fair-use rules, so check before buying anything. For UK, US, Australian and other non-EU visitors, Slovenia typically sits in a roaming tier of around 10 dollars per day. A Blikst plan on Telemach undercuts that substantially and skips the shop visit and ID registration a local Telekom Slovenije SIM requires.
