Description

Samoa runs on island time, but your ferry to Savai'i doesn't — and neither does the rental-car pickup at Faleolo, the snorkelling pickup from Lalomanu, or the return confirmation for your flight out. A Blikst Samoa eSIM runs on Digicel Samoa, one of the two carriers serving the islands, at 3G / 4G speeds across Upolu, Savai'i, and the populated smaller islands.

Where Digicel covers well

Apia and the north coast of Upolu have solid 4G. The cross-island road to Lalomanu and the south coast beach fales drops to 3G in parts of the interior. Savai'i — reached via the Salelologa ferry — has 3G/4G around the main towns (Salelologa, Asau, Fagamalo) but gets patchy in the interior volcanic highlands. Manono and Apolima have basic coverage. Remote fales on Savai'i's south coast may have weak signal; ask your host before booking.

Cost vs. a local SIM

Digicel and Vodafone Samoa both sell tourist SIMs at Faleolo International (APW), and the counters are usually open for arrival flights. If you're staying a week or more and want calls plus data, a local SIM can be economical. For data-only use without the registration paperwork and queuing post-flight, the Blikst eSIM loads before you leave home. Most home-country carriers treat Samoa as a premium roaming zone — expect $3–$5 per MB or $12+/day, which makes even a small prepaid plan cheaper within a day or two.

Arrival at Faleolo (APW)

Install the profile before you fly. APW is about 40 minutes from Apia, and the taxi drivers at the airport don't take card — you'll want data for Google Maps, WhatsApp to your accommodation, and possibly a currency converter on the ride in. The line activates as soon as your phone registers on Digicel after landing.

Apps Samoan travel actually uses

  • Facebook and Messenger: Samoa's digital life skews heavily toward Facebook. Tour operators, beach fales, and even restaurants often post hours and updates there first, not on their websites.
  • WhatsApp: Common for international bookings — Australian and New Zealand-run dive operators and tours tend to default to it.
  • Google Maps: Main roads on Upolu and Savai'i are mapped; smaller village roads and beach-fale driveways often aren't. Download offline maps of both islands before you go.
  • Samoa Shipping Corporation: Ferry timetables between Upolu and Savai'i. Schedules shift with weather — check the day of travel.
  • Accommodation host communication: Many beach fales are family-run and confirm bookings the day-of via Messenger or SMS. Keep data alive.

Inter-island and rural notes

The Salelologa ferry crossing between Upolu and Savai'i has signal on both ends and weakens in the middle of the strait. If you're staying at a remote fale, test your signal on arrival — some south-coast Savai'i fales rely entirely on the fale's landline or satellite for emergencies. Cyclone season (November to April) can knock out coverage for hours after a serious storm; have a backup plan for check-outs during that window.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A 4-day Apia stopover: 1–2 GB covers WhatsApp, maps, and ferry research. A one-week Upolu beach trip: 3 GB. A two-week Upolu + Savai'i itinerary with some remote fale stays: 5 GB (you'll be offline for chunks of it anyway). A month-long stay — working remotely from Apia or doing research on Savai'i — size at 10–20 GB, keeping in mind that 3G/4G speeds make heavy video streaming impractical regardless.

Install the profile, fly into APW, and skip the airport SIM queue. You land, text your host, and start the island loop instead of fighting a registration form on arrival.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Samoa eSIM runs on Digicel Samoa, one of the two carriers serving the islands. You get 3G and 4G speeds across Upolu, Savai'i and the populated smaller islands. It's plenty for maps, WhatsApp, Messenger and booking confirmations, though bear in mind that 3G/4G speeds make heavy video streaming impractical regardless of how much data you carry.

Apia and the north coast of Upolu have solid 4G. The cross-island road to Lalomanu and the south coast beach fales drop to 3G in parts of the interior. On Savai'i, reached via the Salelologa ferry, you get 3G/4G around the main towns of Salelologa, Asau and Fagamalo, but it goes patchy in the volcanic highlands. Manono and Apolima have only basic coverage, and remote south-coast Savai'i fales may have weak signal, so ask your host before booking.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Scan the QR code provided to install the profile onto your phone, which takes a moment over Wi-Fi at home. Do this before you fly. Activation is automatic: the line switches on as soon as your phone registers on Digicel after you land at Faleolo, so you're connected the instant you arrive.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support, look on an iPhone under Settings, General, About for an EID number, or check the network settings on Android. If you can see an EID, you're almost certainly good to go.

It depends on your trip. A four-day Apia stopover runs comfortably on 1 to 2 GB for WhatsApp, maps and ferry research. A one-week Upolu beach trip suits about 3 GB. A two-week Upolu and Savai'i itinerary with some remote fale stays needs around 5 GB, since you'll be offline for chunks of it anyway. For a month working remotely from Apia or researching on Savai'i, size at 10 to 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It's handy for catching up on emails from your beach fale or working remotely from Apia. Just keep in mind the 3G/4G speeds and patchy coverage in interior and remote areas, so signal may be weak before you even think about sharing it.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't include a local Samoan phone number for traditional calls or texts. In practice that's rarely a problem in Samoa, where digital life skews heavily toward Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, which all run over data. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone to keep your usual number for the odd important text.

Most home-country carriers treat Samoa as a premium roaming zone, so expect around $3 to $5 per MB or $12 and up per day, which makes even a small prepaid plan cheaper within a day or two. Digicel and Vodafone Samoa do sell tourist SIMs at Faleolo, which can be economical for a week-plus stay with calls. But for data-only use, the Blikst eSIM loads before you leave and skips the arrival queue and registration paperwork.
