Description

Saint-Martin's French side is small, scenic and easy to over-roam — a walk up the beach at Grand Case and you could accidentally end up on Sint Maarten's Dutch side, where your eSIM won't work. A Blikst Saint Martin French eSIM runs on TelCell, with 4G coverage across the French collectivity: Marigot, Grand Case, Orient Bay, Anse Marcel, Baie Rouge and the road out to the Dutch border at Cupecoy.

Where TelCell's signal works

Marigot, Grand Case and the northern beaches (Orient Bay, Anse Marcel, Happy Bay) get solid 4G. Terres Basses and the western peninsula are well covered. The Pic Paradis high point has signal reaching from the surrounding masts, though trail dips can drop you to 3G. The border with Sint Maarten is a porous one — there's no customs post, just a welcome sign — but network-wise it matters: this plan is for the French side only. Once you wander over to Philipsburg, Simpson Bay or Maho Beach (Dutch side), your phone will start hunting for Dutch networks. Buy a separate Sint Maarten eSIM if you're spending real time south of the border.

The island-is-two-countries factor

Saint-Martin (French, with .mf country code) and Sint Maarten (Dutch, with .sx country code) share the same 87 km² island but have separate telecom networks, currencies (euro / US dollar, though dollars circulate widely on both sides), and in practice, separate regulators. Many regional Caribbean eSIMs cover the Dutch side but not the French side, or vice-versa. This is specifically the French side.

Cost vs. roaming or a local SIM

French metropolitan carriers (Orange, Free, SFR) often include Saint-Martin in domestic allowances — check before buying anything extra, you may not need it. Other EU roam-like-home plans typically do NOT cover Saint-Martin the same way (it's an overseas collectivity with separate rules). US and UK travellers usually face $10–$12 per day roaming if covered at all. Blikst on TelCell comes in well below that.

Activation on arrival

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Most visitors fly into Princess Juliana (SXM) on the Dutch side — the island's main airport — and then cross to the French side by taxi or bus. Your Blikst line will activate on TelCell once you're on the French side; expect a brief period near SXM airport where your phone pings Dutch networks first. Arrivals directly into Grand Case (SFG) airstrip on small inter-island flights from Saint-Barthélemy or Anguilla skip that hand-off. Turn off data roaming on your home line either way.

Apps you'll actually use

  • Google Maps: The French-Dutch border crossings aren't labelled on the ground but do show on live maps. Worth knowing where you're standing so you know which eSIM is responsible for the signal.
  • WhatsApp: Boat charters from Marigot, beach club reservations at Orient Bay, and private chef bookings almost all run here.
  • Anguilla ferry and Saint-Barth ferry: Both depart from Marigot. Schedules wobble in weather; live websites or social accounts are more current than printed boards.
  • Weather: Hurricane season (June–November) matters. Meteorological services like Météo-France Antilles-Guyane are worth checking daily in that window.
  • Translation: French is official; English is widely spoken in tourist zones but thins quickly inland. A menu translation tool helps at smaller bistros.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A four- or five-day beach stay where you're mostly at the resort Wi-Fi is easy on 1–2 GB. A week touring both sides of the island, with the French side as your base and day trips across, wants 3–5 GB for the French portion. Longer stays of two weeks, charter-boat hops to Saint-Barth and Anguilla, and daily photo uploads push you to 10 GB. If you're working remotely from a villa, size up to 20 GB — villa Wi-Fi in the Terres Basses is variable.

A few good-to-knows

Post-Irma (2017) rebuilding changed the retail landscape; some beaches (notably the old Sunset Bar area on the Dutch side near Maho) have been redeveloped. Live map data is more current than Lonely Planet. Keep your phone aware of which side of the island it's on — if you're about to cross to Philipsburg for a day, check your settings so you don't accidentally roam.

Install before you fly, land at SXM, cross to the French side, and your Blikst line will settle onto TelCell. Marigot for lunch, Grand Case for dinner, no kiosk stop in between.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Saint-Martin French eSIM runs on TelCell, the operator covering the French collectivity. You get 4G speeds across the French side, which is plenty for maps, WhatsApp, ferry bookings and photo uploads. Do keep in mind this plan covers the French side only, so if you cross to the Dutch side of the island your phone will start hunting for Dutch networks instead.

TelCell gives you solid 4G across the French collectivity: Marigot, Grand Case and the northern beaches at Orient Bay, Anse Marcel and Happy Bay. Terres Basses and the western peninsula are well covered too, and there's signal reaching the Pic Paradis high point from surrounding masts, though trail dips can drop you to 3G. Coverage stops at the Dutch border, so Philipsburg, Simpson Bay and Maho Beach are not included.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install it. Do this at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic and your line settles onto TelCell once you're on the French side. Most people land at Princess Juliana (SXM) on the Dutch side, so expect a brief moment where your phone pings Dutch networks before you cross over.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to be sure. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can confirm eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it's in the network or SIM settings. If in doubt, check before you travel.

It depends on your trip. A four or five-day beach stay where you're mostly on resort Wi-Fi is easy on 1 to 2 GB. A week touring the island with the French side as your base, doing day trips across, wants 3 to 5 GB for the French portion. Two weeks with charter-boat hops to Saint-Barth and Anguilla plus daily photo uploads pushes you to 10 GB. Working remotely from a villa? Size up to 20 GB, as Terres Basses villa Wi-Fi is variable.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your TelCell connection with a laptop or tablet. This is genuinely handy if you're working from a villa in the Terres Basses, where the local Wi-Fi can be patchy. Just remember the hotspot only works while you're connected on the French side, so if you cross to the Dutch side your shared signal will drop along with your own.

This is a data plan, so it doesn't come with a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely an issue here, as boat charters from Marigot, beach club reservations at Orient Bay and chef bookings nearly all run over WhatsApp. You can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime, and because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your home SIM and number can stay in the phone.

For most travellers, yes. US and UK visitors usually face around 10 to 12 dollars per day in roaming, if their plan covers Saint-Martin at all, and Blikst on TelCell comes in well below that. One thing worth checking first: French metropolitan carriers like Orange, Free and SFR often include Saint-Martin in domestic allowances, so you may not need anything extra. EU roam-like-home plans typically do not cover it the same way.
