Description

Romania is bigger than most first-time visitors expect — Bucharest to Maramureș is a six-hour drive, and the Transfăgărășan and Transalpina alpine roads alone eat a full day each. A Blikst Romania eSIM runs on Vodafone Romania's 4G / 5G network, which covers the major cities, all the main autostradas, and a surprising amount of the Carpathian backcountry that the national road map suggests should be offline.

Coverage from Bucharest to the Danube Delta

Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, and Brașov all have 5G. The A1, A2, and A3 motorways hold 4G the whole way. The Transylvanian route through Sibiu, Brașov, and Sighișoara is well-covered. The Transfăgărășan above the treeline (open summer only, roughly July–October) drops in and out as you pass between valleys; the high point around Bâlea Lake usually has 4G. The Danube Delta around Tulcea has solid 4G at the town and 3G / nothing once you're out in the channels — the Sulina arm, the Chilia arm, and the Letea forest are offline for most practical purposes. Maramureș villages (Breb, Săpânța, Botiza) have 4G at village centres and variable reach in between.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a local SIM

Romania is in the EU, and Roam Like at Home applies for EU-resident travellers — check your fair-use cap before buying anything. For UK, US, and other non-EU travellers, Romania typically sits in the $8–$12 daily roaming tier. A Blikst eSIM undercuts that and skips the passport-registration step for a local Digi Mobil, Orange, or Vodafone prepaid card. Digi Mobil is the country's cheapest long-term option for residents; for a week or two of travel, the eSIM is the simpler path.

Arrival at Henri Coandă (OTP), Cluj (CLJ), or overland

Install the profile on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Bucharest Henri Coandă is 18 km north of the city; the Vodafone line registers as you walk to the express bus or taxi stand. Cluj International, Timișoara (TSR), and Iași (IAS) all work the same way. Overland arrivals from Hungary at Nădlac, Bulgaria at Giurgiu / Ruse, and Moldova at Albița activate on the first Romanian tower past the border post.

Local apps and data habits

  • Bolt and Uber: Both operate in Bucharest and Cluj with strong driver coverage. Bolt is slightly cheaper on average; Uber has better airport-queue management.
  • FreeNow (Taxify): Regulated taxi bookings in Bucharest.
  • STB and STPT: Bucharest and Timișoara public transport ticketing apps.
  • Glovo and Tazz: Food delivery. Tazz (from Emag) is the stronger local option, especially in Cluj and smaller cities.
  • CFR Călători and Blu Air: National rail and budget-flight apps. Romanian rail can be slow but scenic; the app is far faster than the station ticket windows.
  • Google Maps and Waze: Both reliable. For Transfăgărășan and the Maramureș back roads, download offline tiles.

Plan sizing by trip length

A Bucharest weekend works on 1–3 GB. A one-week Transylvania loop — Bucharest, Brașov, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Cluj — wants 5 GB, more if you're hot-spotting for GPS-heavy driving across the Transfăgărășan. Two weeks that add Maramureș and a Danube Delta boat trip fit 10 GB. Digital nomads basing in Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest for a month (both are popular nomad cities with decent co-working infrastructure) should go 20 GB.

Good to know

Romania uses the leu (RON), not the euro; it joined Schengen for air travel in March 2024, which cut airport passport queues significantly. Contactless payments are everywhere in cities and surprisingly common even in village shops. Tipping is typically 10%. Driving standards are variable — Waze's real-time alerts earn their keep here.

Install at home, land at OTP or cross the border, and the Vodafone Romania line picks up before you clear arrivals.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Romania eSIM runs on Vodafone Romania's network, giving you 4G and 5G speeds. It covers the major cities, all the main autostradas, and a surprising amount of the Carpathian backcountry that the national road map suggests should be offline. You get 5G in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi and Brasov, with reliable 4G filling in everywhere else along the routes you're likely to drive.

Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi and Brasov all have 5G, and the A1, A2 and A3 motorways hold 4G the whole way. The Transylvanian route through Sibiu, Brasov and Sighisoara is well covered. Be aware of the weak spots: the Transfagarasan drops in and out between valleys, and the Danube Delta out past Tulcea (the Sulina arm, the Chilia arm, Letea forest) is offline for most practical purposes.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code provided to install the profile. Do this on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic on arrival in Romania, so the Vodafone line registers as you walk to the bus or taxi at Henri Coanda, Cluj, Timisoara or Iasi. Overland arrivals from Hungary, Bulgaria or Moldova activate on the first Romanian tower past the border post.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android it's in your network or SIM settings. If the EID is listed, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A Bucharest weekend works on 1 to 3 GB. A one-week Transylvania loop through Bucharest, Brasov, Sibiu, Sighisoara and Cluj wants around 5 GB, more if you're hot-spotting for GPS-heavy driving across the Transfagarasan. Two weeks that add Maramures and a Danube Delta boat trip fit about 10 GB. Digital nomads basing in Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest for a month should go for 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. It's genuinely useful here, since hot-spotting for GPS-heavy driving across the Transfagarasan and the Maramures back roads can eat through data quickly. A practical tip: download offline map tiles for those routes before you set off, as coverage drops in and out between valleys and that saves your data for when you really need it.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a local Romanian phone number for traditional calls or texts. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Telegram on your data. Because an eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone, so you keep your own number active for anything important while you travel.
