Description

Northern Cyprus runs on a different mobile system to the Republic of Cyprus in the south — cross the Ledra Street checkpoint in Nicosia and your southern eSIM stops working. A Blikst Northern Cyprus eSIM runs on Turkcell's 4G / 5G network (operating locally as Kuzey Kibris Turkcell / KKTC) and connects from the moment you arrive at Ercan Airport (ECN), come through the Ledra or Agios Dometios crossings from the south, or ferry in from Taşucu and Mersin on the Turkish mainland.

Where Turkcell works best in the north

Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Nicosia North (Lefkoşa), and Morphou (Güzelyurt) all have strong 4G with 5G in the main towns. The coastal road from Kyrenia east toward Esentepe and Bafra has steady signal, and the main Kyrenia–Nicosia highway through the Beşparmak mountain pass stays connected. The Karpaz peninsula — the long north-eastern finger out toward Apostolos Andreas — thins out as you head past Dipkarpaz; the last 40 km toward the cape can drop to 3G or edge in patches. Mountain hikes in the Kyrenia range and inland village loops may lose signal in valleys.

Cost vs. roaming and the southern-eSIM trap

Northern Cyprus is not covered by Republic of Cyprus eSIMs, is not inside the EU roaming zone even if your home carrier covers the Republic, and most international carriers charge high "rest of world" roaming rates here — often $15+ per day. A Blikst Northern Cyprus plan runs well below that. If you're doing a trip that crosses the Green Line in both directions, budget for two eSIMs (south and north) rather than trying to stretch one — they don't share coverage.

Getting connected on arrival

Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Most flights into ECN connect through Istanbul or Izmir; the plan only activates when a Northern Cyprus tower picks it up, so leave your home roaming off during the Turkey leg if you don't want double-charging. When you clear Ercan and switch off airplane mode, the Turkcell line registers automatically. If you're entering by land from the south, the plan kicks in within a kilometre or two of the crossing as you enter the northern network footprint.

What travellers actually use data for here

  • WhatsApp: Boutique hotels in Kyrenia, dive operators at Esentepe, and car hire companies almost all use WhatsApp for confirmations and pickup coordination.
  • Google Maps: Essential for finding the Karpaz beach tracks, Salamis and Famagusta ruins, and the mountain monasteries. Roads change quickly; offline maps alone won't be current.
  • BiTaksi and local call-a-cab numbers: Ride-hail apps have limited presence — most taxi booking is by phone or via your hotel. Having data means VoIP calls back home work cleanly on WhatsApp.
  • Currency apps: Northern Cyprus uses the Turkish lira, not the euro. XE or Revolut for live rates matters when menus and hotel desks quote in TRY, GBP, or EUR interchangeably.
  • Translation: Turkish is the main language. Google Translate's camera mode helps for menus, road signs, and village-shop packaging.
  • Banking 2FA: Your home bank will SMS to your home number. Keep that active for codes, use the Turkcell line for everything else.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend based in Kyrenia with a day trip to Famagusta and Salamis works on 2–3 GB. A one-week loop — Kyrenia, Famagusta, Karpaz, Nicosia North — fits into 5 GB. Two weeks combined with diving, village stays, and deeper Karpaz exploration sits in 10 GB. Long-stay visitors or anyone working remotely from a Kyrenia apartment should look at 20 GB or higher, especially with video calls back home.

Install the profile before you fly, land at ECN or cross from the south already on Turkcell, and drive off into the Kyrenia range without a SIM-counter stop. Northern-side coverage only — south of the line, use a Republic of Cyprus eSIM.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Northern Cyprus eSIM runs on Turkcell's 4G and 5G network, which operates locally as Kuzey Kibris Turkcell (KKTC). This is the northern mobile system, completely separate from the Republic of Cyprus in the south. You get strong 4G across the main towns with 5G in the larger ones, so navigation, WhatsApp confirmations and video calls home all work smoothly while you travel.

Turkcell works best in Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimagusa), Nicosia North (Lefkosa) and Morphou (Guzelyurt), all with strong 4G and 5G in the main towns. The coastal road east toward Esentepe and Bafra and the Kyrenia–Nicosia highway through the Besparmak pass stay connected. Be aware the Karpaz peninsula thins out past Dipkarpaz, with the last 40 km toward the cape dropping to 3G or edge, and mountain valleys in the Kyrenia range can lose signal.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install the profile. Do this on home Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates automatically the moment a Northern Cyprus Turkcell tower picks it up — when you clear Ercan Airport and switch off airplane mode, or within a kilometre or two of crossing from the south. Most flights connect through Istanbul or Izmir, so keep home roaming off during the Turkey leg to avoid double-charging.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it is worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it appears in the network or SIM settings. If in doubt, check before you buy.

It depends on your trip. A long weekend based in Kyrenia with a day trip to Famagusta and Salamis works on 2 to 3 GB. A one-week loop taking in Kyrenia, Famagusta, Karpaz and Nicosia North fits into around 5 GB. Two weeks with diving, village stays and deeper Karpaz exploration sits around 10 GB. Long-stay visitors or anyone working remotely from a Kyrenia apartment should look at 20 GB or higher, especially with regular video calls home.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share the connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. That is handy if you are working remotely from a Kyrenia apartment or need a second device online for maps and bookings. Bear in mind shared data is still drawn from the same allowance, and hotspot use eats through it faster than browsing on one phone, so size your plan accordingly.

These are data-only plans, so they do not come with a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a limit here, because boutique hotels, dive operators and car hire firms almost all coordinate over WhatsApp, and VoIP calls home work cleanly over data on apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Since the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone — keep it active so your bank's 2FA codes still reach your home number.

Almost always. Northern Cyprus is not covered by Republic of Cyprus eSIMs and sits outside the EU roaming zone even if your home carrier covers the south, so most international carriers charge high rest-of-world roaming rates here, often over $15 a day. A Blikst Northern Cyprus plan runs well below that. One important note: if your trip crosses the Green Line both ways, budget for two eSIMs, one south and one north, as they do not share coverage.
