Description

Nicaragua's tourism circuit runs through Granada, León, Ometepe Island, San Juan del Sur and the surf breaks of the Pacific coast — plus a smaller contingent heading to the Caribbean Corn Islands. A Blikst Nicaragua eSIM runs on Millicom's Tigo Nicaragua 3G/4G network, one of the country's two major carriers alongside Claro, with solid coverage across Managua, Granada, León, Masaya, and the Pacific coast highway. Remote Caribbean side routes and some parts of the northern highlands drop to thinner service.

Where Tigo works well

Managua (Los Robles, Carretera Masaya, the Oriental market area), Granada, León, Masaya, Estelí, and Matagalpa all have 4G. The Pan-American Highway (CA-1) from the Honduran border south through León, Managua and to the Costa Rican crossing at Peñas Blancas is consistently covered. San Juan del Sur and the Playa Maderas / Playa Hermosa surf corridor have 4G at the town centre and mostly along the coast road. Ometepe Island (accessed by ferry from San Jorge) has 4G on the lakeside towns (Moyogalpa, Altagracia); the Concepción and Maderas volcano slopes drop fast. The Río San Juan region and Solentiname Islands have thin service. The Corn Islands on the Caribbean side have limited coverage — Big Corn has 3G around Brig Bay; Little Corn is largely offline.

Cost vs. buying a local SIM

Tigo and Claro both sell tourist SIMs at Managua Augusto C. Sandino airport for a few dollars with data packs. Registration is quick with passport but you'll queue. US carriers roaming in Nicaragua typically charge $10–$12 per day. A Blikst eSIM installs before you fly and is competitive for trips longer than 3–4 days.

Arrival at Managua (MGA)

Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi. Land at Augusto C. Sandino (MGA), switch airplane mode off, and Tigo registers. Managua's airport is 10–15 minutes from Metrocentro and the main hotel cluster. Uber operates in Managua but coverage can be variable; pre-arranged hotel shuttles are common for arrivals. Transport to Granada (45 minutes), León (90 minutes), or San Juan del Sur (2.5 hours) is typically by private shuttle or chicken bus.

Apps you'll use

  • WhatsApp — hostels, tour operators, shuttle services and surf schools default to WhatsApp for everything. The dominant communication channel.
  • Uber — works in Managua, with limited presence elsewhere.
  • Google Maps — reliable in urban areas; download offline for Ometepe Island and the Río San Juan region.
  • Waze — used by local drivers, particularly in Managua.
  • Google Translate — Spanish is universal; helpful for menus and rural signs.
  • Ferry apps and sites — San Jorge to Ometepe ferry schedules shift seasonally; check on the day.

Ometepe, Corn Islands, and surf coast

The San Jorge to Moyogalpa ferry on Ometepe has signal at both terminals and mid-lake is patchy. Once on Ometepe, signal is strong around the lakeside villages and drops on the volcano hikes. The Corn Islands require a La Costeña flight from Managua to Big Corn, then a panga to Little Corn. Treat Little Corn as mostly offline — dive shops have Wi-Fi, the main road doesn't have much. San Juan del Sur has 4G across town; the beaches 20–30 minutes away have 4G at the main operator surf camps.

Practical notes

Nicaragua eSIMs are data-only. Political and internet conditions in Nicaragua can affect specific apps; check current travel advisories for your country before departure. Keep your home number active for SMS 2FA. ATMs outside Managua, Granada and León can be unreliable — carry cash.

Plan sizing

A 4-day Granada + León weekend — 2 GB. A one-week Managua + Granada + San Juan del Sur trip — 5 GB. Two-week circuit including Ometepe and the Corn Islands — 10 GB. Long-term surfers in San Juan del Sur or volunteers in Granada for a month — 20 GB.

Install before you fly, land at Managua, and skip the SIM shop detour entirely.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Nicaragua eSIM runs on Millicom's Tigo Nicaragua network, one of the country's two major carriers alongside Claro. You get 3G and 4G speeds, which is plenty for maps, messaging and browsing across the main tourist circuit. Tigo gives solid coverage in Managua, Granada, Leon, Masaya and along the Pacific coast highway, so you stay connected through most of the places travellers actually visit.

Tigo has 4G in Managua, Granada, Leon, Masaya, Esteli and Matagalpa, and consistent coverage along the Pan-American Highway from the Honduran border down to Penas Blancas. San Juan del Sur and the Playa Maderas surf corridor are covered, and Ometepe's lakeside towns get 4G. Be honest with yourself about weak spots: the Concepcion and Maderas volcano slopes, the Rio San Juan region, Solentiname, and the Caribbean Corn Islands all drop fast, with Little Corn largely offline.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes just minutes. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: the eSIM activates on arrival in Nicaragua, so when you land at Managua's Augusto C. Sandino airport you simply switch airplane mode off and Tigo registers your line. There's no SIM shop queue and no fiddling once you're on the ground.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device before you buy. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android the option lives in your network or SIM settings. If both are present, you're good to go.

It depends on your route. A four-day Granada and Leon weekend is comfortable on about 2 GB. A one-week Managua, Granada and San Juan del Sur trip suits roughly 5 GB. A two-week circuit including Ometepe and the Corn Islands works well on around 10 GB. Long-term surfers in San Juan del Sur or volunteers staying a month in Granada are better on 20 GB. Maps and WhatsApp are the main everyday drains.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It's handy for working from a cafe in Granada or sorting shuttle bookings from your hotel. Bear in mind it draws on the same data allowance, and since coverage thins out on the volcano slopes, around the Rio San Juan and on the Corn Islands, your hotspot will only be as strong as the Tigo signal in that spot.

Blikst Nicaragua eSIMs are data-only, so there's no local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's no problem, because hostels, tour operators, shuttle services and surf schools all default to WhatsApp, and you can call or message freely over the internet with apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. An eSIM is a separate digital line, so keep your home SIM in the phone and your usual number stays active, which is useful for SMS two-factor codes.

For most trips, yes. US carriers roaming in Nicaragua typically charge around 10 to 12 dollars per day, which adds up fast. Tigo and Claro do sell tourist SIMs at Managua airport for a few dollars, but you'll queue and register with your passport on arrival. A Blikst eSIM installs before you fly and is competitive for trips longer than three or four days, letting you skip the SIM shop detour entirely and land already connected.
