Description

The Netherlands is the ultimate short-hop city-break country for Europeans and a major business hub for everyone else — Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven are all within 90 minutes of Schiphol by train. A Blikst Netherlands eSIM runs on Vodafone NL's 4G/5G network, one of the country's three main carriers alongside KPN and Odido, with strong coverage across the whole Randstad conurbation and out into the coastal, eastern and southern regions.

Where Vodafone NL works well

Amsterdam (Centrum, Oud-West, Noord, Zuidas), Rotterdam (Kop van Zuid, Centrum, Delfshaven), The Hague (Binnenhof, Scheveningen), Utrecht, Eindhoven and Groningen all have dense 5G. The A2, A1, A4 and A12 motorways are consistently covered. The Intercity Direct Amsterdam–Rotterdam line and the NS network generally have signal at every station and through tunnels. The Wadden Islands (Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog) have 4G at the main villages and along the coastal roads; some interior nature reserves drop to thinner service. The Veluwe national park and the southern Limburg hills around Maastricht are well covered. Underground in the Amsterdam metro, signal works in stations and most tunnels.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a local SIM

EU travellers with "roam like home" already have the Netherlands included — don't buy this plan if you do. Non-EU visitors (US, UK post-Brexit, Canadian, Australian) pay $10–$12 per day for home carrier roaming, which outruns a week-long Blikst plan fast. Dutch tourist SIMs from Lebara, Lycamobile or Simyo can be bought at AKO, Bruna and Albert Heijn for €10–€20 but require registration.

Arrival at Schiphol (AMS)

Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi. Land at Schiphol (AMS), Rotterdam The Hague (RTM), or Eindhoven (EIN), switch airplane mode off, and Vodafone NL picks up. Schiphol has direct Intercity trains to Amsterdam Centraal in 15 minutes (€5.60), The Hague in 30 minutes, Rotterdam in 25 minutes via Intercity Direct. The airport and trains both have OV-chipkaart contactless tap; your phone works as payment via OVpay.

Apps you'll actually use

  • NS and 9292 — NS is the national rail app (tickets, platform info, disruptions); 9292 is the integrated journey planner across all transport modes.
  • GVB (Amsterdam), RET (Rotterdam), HTM (The Hague) — city transit apps for tram, metro, bus.
  • Uber and Bolt — both work in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Bolt is often cheaper.
  • OVpay — tap your contactless bank card or phone wallet on Dutch public transport; replaces paper tickets for most trips.
  • Tikkie — the Dutch peer-to-peer payment request app. Friends at restaurants will Tikkie you for your share; as a short-term visitor you won't have an account but you'll see it everywhere.
  • Thuisbezorgd — Dutch food delivery; Uber Eats also works.
  • Buienradar — the Dutch rain radar app. Genuinely useful — local weather moves in bands, and a 10-minute window between showers is a real thing you plan around.

Cycling, canals, and Schiphol transit

If you're hiring a bike (and you should), GPS routing on Google Maps' cycling mode works well across the whole country — the Netherlands has the world's best cycling infrastructure and Google Maps knows it. Canal cruises through Amsterdam have signal throughout. The Keukenhof (tulip gardens near Lisse), Giethoorn, and Kinderdijk are all covered. Schiphol is a common connecting hub; if you're only transiting and not clearing immigration, the eSIM won't help — you need to land on Dutch soil and toggle off airplane mode for the line to register.

Plan sizing

A weekend Amsterdam break (2–3 days) — 2 GB. A one-week Netherlands + Belgium side-trip combo — 5 GB (buy Belgium separately). Two-week Benelux tour with heavy museum and transit use — 10 GB. Digital nomads in Amsterdam or Rotterdam for a month — 20 GB or more.

Install before you fly, land at Schiphol, and get on the Intercity with a working line from platform one.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Netherlands eSIM runs on Vodafone NL, one of the country's three main carriers alongside KPN and Odido. You get 4G and 5G speeds, with dense 5G across the cities and solid LTE elsewhere. Coverage is strong throughout the Randstad conurbation and out into the coastal, eastern and southern regions, so you stay connected whether you're in the city centre or out exploring.

Vodafone NL gives dense 5G across Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Eindhoven and Groningen, plus consistent signal on the A1, A2, A4 and A12 motorways and the NS rail network, including stations and tunnels. The Wadden Islands have 4G at the main villages and coastal roads, though some interior nature reserves drop to thinner service. The Veluwe, the Limburg hills around Maastricht, Keukenhof, Giethoorn and Kinderdijk are all well covered.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details. Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: the eSIM activates the moment you arrive in the Netherlands. Land at Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague or Eindhoven, switch airplane mode off, and Vodafone NL picks up. Note that transiting Schiphol without clearing immigration won't register the line; you must land on Dutch soil.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android you'll find it in the network settings. If you see an EID and your handset is unlocked, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A weekend Amsterdam break of two to three days is comfortable on 2 GB. A one-week Netherlands plus a Belgium side-trip suits around 5 GB, though you'd buy Belgium separately. A two-week Benelux tour with heavy museum and transit use is better on 10 GB. Digital nomads staying in Amsterdam or Rotterdam for a month should plan on 20 GB or more.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. This is handy if you're working from a cafe in Amsterdam or Rotterdam, or keeping a second device online while you navigate by train. Just remember that hotspot use draws from the same data allowance, so a video call or large download will eat through your plan faster than browsing.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a local Dutch phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Telegram. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone, so you keep your usual number for any essential texts or calls while travelling.

If you're an EU traveller with roam-like-home, the Netherlands is already included, so don't buy this plan. For non-EU visitors from the US, UK, Canada or Australia, home carrier roaming runs around 10 to 12 US dollars a day, which outruns a week-long Blikst plan fast. Dutch tourist SIMs from Lebara, Lycamobile or Simyo cost roughly 10 to 20 euros at AKO, Bruna or Albert Heijn but require registration.
