Description

Morocco rewards travellers who can navigate in real time — the medinas of Fez and Marrakech are notorious for swallowing GPS breadcrumbs, the Atlas passes to Ouarzazate have enough switchbacks to turn a four-hour drive into five, and Sahara-edge towns like Merzouga and M'Hamid coordinate camel treks and desert camps almost entirely by WhatsApp. A Blikst Morocco eSIM runs on Orange Morocco (locally branded Orange Maroc, previously Méditel), with 3G / 4G coverage across Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, Tangier, Agadir, and the main N1, N8 and N9 corridors.

Where Orange Maroc's signal works

Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech, Fez, Meknes, Agadir and Essaouira all have reliable 4G. The Atlantic coast from Tangier down to Dakhla is covered along the main road, with towns getting 4G and long stretches of 3G between. Atlas roads up to Tizi n'Tichka and Tizi n'Test passes have signal at the villages — Telouet, Taddert, Imlil, Ouirgane — and gaps on the higher exposed sections. The Sahara gateway towns (Merzouga, M'Hamid, Zagora) have town-centre coverage; once you're 20 minutes out on a camel into the dunes, treat it as offline. Chefchaouen and the Rif mountains are covered in town with thinner rural patches.

Cost vs. roaming or a local SIM

Most EU and UK carriers charge €5–€10 per day for Morocco roaming. US travellers usually pay $10 or more. A Blikst eSIM undercuts those across a full trip. Local Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or Inwi SIMs are available at airports and in city centres; the airport kiosks accept passport registration on arrival but add a queue and often upsell larger plans than you need. The eSIM avoids the whole interaction.

Activation at the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi for the QR scan. When you land at Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN), Marrakech Menara (RAK), Fez-Saïss (FEZ) or Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG) and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst line registers on Orange Maroc automatically. Turn off data roaming on your home line first. Ferry arrivals from Spain at Tangier Med, Ceuta or Melilla will see the plan activate once a Moroccan tower picks up — expect a border-zone moment where your phone is indecisive.

Apps you'll actually open

  • Google Maps: Medinas are the hardest thing to navigate; pedestrian mode with offline tiles loaded in advance will save hours. Download Marrakech and Fez medinas specifically before you arrive.
  • Careem, inDrive and Heetch: Ride-hail apps that operate in larger cities. Uber pulled out of Morocco years ago. Local petit-taxis are cash-only and use meters (insist on them).
  • WhatsApp: Riad owners, desert tour operators, hammam bookings — everything runs on WhatsApp in Morocco. Budget for constant usage.
  • ONCF: The national rail operator's app handles bookings for Al Boraq (Tangier–Casablanca high-speed), Casablanca–Marrakech, and the Fez–Oujda line. Online booking beats station queues.
  • Translation: Darija (Moroccan Arabic), French and increasingly English — Google Translate covers signs and menus. Offline packs help in the south and east where French thins out.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Marrakech sits on 2–3 GB comfortably. A one-week imperial-cities loop (Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Meknes, Marrakech) wants 5 GB. A two-week classic — the cities plus Chefchaouen, Essaouira and a desert excursion to Merzouga — fits on 10 GB, recognising that Sahara nights will be offline anyway. Three weeks covering everything above plus the Atlantic coast to Dakhla or a High Atlas trek should go 20 GB. Remote workers basing in Marrakech or Tangier for a month should size 20 GB or higher.

A few practicalities

Morocco uses the dirham (MAD) and cash still dominates outside upmarket hotels and restaurants. ATM withdrawals are straightforward in cities; your banking app needs data to approve transactions in real time. Driving your own rental through medinas is not a thing — park on the edge and walk in. The Atlas passes can close for snow in winter; live weather and road-status matter.

Install before you fly, land at any of Morocco's main airports with Orange Maroc already on your Blikst line, and head straight to the grand-taxi rank or the airport train. No SIM kiosk, no haggling over a bundle you don't need, and the medina navigator is already working for the first call to prayer you hear from the rooftop.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Morocco eSIM runs on Orange Morocco, locally branded Orange Maroc and previously known as Mditel, which is one of the country's major operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with reliable 4G across the main cities and 3G filling the gaps on quieter stretches of road. It is a solid choice for staying connected through the cities, the coast and the main travel corridors.

Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech, Fez, Meknes, Agadir and Essaouira all have reliable 4G, and the Atlantic coast from Tangier down to Dakhla is covered along the main road. Be honest with your expectations in the wild bits: the Atlas passes have signal at villages like Telouet, Imlil and Ouirgane but gaps on higher exposed sections, and once you ride a camel 20 minutes into the Merzouga or M'Hamid dunes, treat it as offline.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install the line. Do this at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic: when you land at Casablanca, Marrakech, Fez or Tangier and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst line registers on Orange Maroc by itself. Turn data roaming off on your home line first. Ferry arrivals from Spain activate once a Moroccan tower picks up.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst Morocco eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number, and on Android you will find eSIM options in your network settings. If in doubt, confirm before you travel.

It depends on your trip. A long weekend in Marrakech sits comfortably on 2 to 3 GB. A one-week imperial-cities loop through Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Meknes and Marrakech wants around 5 GB. A two-week classic adding Chefchaouen, Essaouira and a desert excursion to Merzouga fits on 10 GB, since Sahara nights are offline anyway. Three weeks covering the Atlantic coast or a High Atlas trek should go 20 GB, and a month basing in Marrakech or Tangier wants 20 GB or higher.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. That is genuinely useful in Morocco, where riad owners, hammam bookings and desert tour operators all coordinate over WhatsApp and you may want a second device online. Just remember that hotspot data draws from the same allowance, so it is worth sizing your plan a little higher if you plan to tether regularly.

This is a data plan, so it gives you mobile internet rather than a traditional phone number for standard calls and texts. In practice that is no obstacle in Morocco, where everything runs on WhatsApp anyway, and you can call or message freely over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and your usual number can stay in the phone, just with roaming switched off.

Usually, yes. Most EU and UK carriers charge 5 to 10 euros per day for Morocco roaming, and US travellers often pay 10 dollars or more, so a Blikst eSIM undercuts those across a full trip. Local Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc or Inwi SIMs are sold at airports and in city centres, but the kiosks require passport registration on arrival, add a queue and often upsell larger plans than you need. The eSIM skips that whole interaction.
