Description

Moldova is one of Europe's quieter travel destinations — Chișinău's Soviet-era boulevards, the wineries at Cricova and Mileștii Mici, the monastery caves of Orheiul Vechi, and the curious autonomous territory of Transnistria across the Dniester. Getting between them on foot, by marshrutka, or with a rental car all go smoother with working maps and messaging. A Blikst Moldova eSIM runs on Orange Moldova, with 3G / 4G coverage across Chișinău, Bălți, Tiraspol, Comrat and the main M1 and M3 road corridors.

Where Orange Moldova's signal works

Chișinău, Bălți and Cahul all have strong 4G. Orheiul Vechi and the monastery villages along the Răut valley have 4G at the main sites and 3G on the back roads. The wine country south and east of the capital — Cricova, Mileștii Mici, Purcari — is well covered. Gagauzia (Comrat and surrounds) has 4G in town and 3G in the steppe villages. Transnistria is a more complicated story (see below). Rural north of Bălți along the Ukrainian border is thinner; pack offline maps if you're self-driving small roads.

A note on Transnistria

Transnistria (the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, PMR) is internationally recognised as part of Moldova but operates its own de-facto telecoms infrastructure, currency and border controls. Your Blikst Moldova eSIM may work in parts of Transnistria where Orange's signal reaches across, or it may hand off to local PMR networks in ways that vary. Don't rely on consistent coverage inside Transnistria; plan a day trip to Tiraspol and Bender with offline maps and cached confirmations, and assume data may drop out.

Cost vs. roaming or a local SIM

Moldova is NOT in the EU, so roam-like-home doesn't cover it on EU home plans. Most EU and UK carriers charge €5–€10 per day on their non-EU bundles. US carriers typically charge around $10. A Blikst eSIM for a week comes in well below any of those. Local Orange or Moldcell SIMs are available at Chișinău International (KIV) but require passport registration.

Activation on arrival

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. When you land at Chișinău International (KIV) and turn airplane mode off, the Blikst line registers on Orange Moldova. Turn off data roaming on your home line first. Arriving overland from Romania at Leușeni or Sculeni, or from Ukraine (where the border situation has been unstable and many crossings are restricted or closed) will activate the plan once a Moldovan tower picks up your phone.

Apps you'll actually use

  • Google Maps: Chișinău's grid is easy; rural roads to Orheiul Vechi and the Transnistrian crossings reward live routing.
  • Yandex Go and Bolt: Both operate in Chișinău. Bolt is increasingly the default; Yandex Go has wider coverage in suburbs.
  • WhatsApp and Viber: Winery tour guides, guesthouse hosts and small tour operators all use these. Viber is particularly common.
  • Booking and Airbnb: Check-in instructions arrive late via app messaging; keep data live so you don't miss the code.
  • Translation: Romanian (Moldovan) is the state language; Russian is widely spoken. Offline packs for both cover most menus and signs.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A weekend in Chișinău fits easily in 2 GB. A week covering Chișinău, Orheiul Vechi, a winery tour and a Tiraspol day trip sits on 3–5 GB. Two-week trips combining Moldova with Romania or Ukraine-adjacent routes should size 5–10 GB for the Moldovan portion (with a separate eSIM for the neighbouring country). Remote workers in Chișinău for a month should go 10 GB or higher; co-working Wi-Fi is good in the capital but occasionally wobbles during power events.

A few good-to-knows

Contactless payment works broadly in Chișinău but cash (Moldovan leu) is still king in rural villages and at many market stalls. Keep data on so your banking app approvals work in real time. Transnistria uses its own rouble; ATM and card use there is limited — bring enough leu or euro for a day trip, and don't count on your eSIM working the whole way.

Install before you fly, land at KIV with Orange Moldova already serving your Blikst line, and go. Straight into a minibus to the city centre, no SIM kiosk paperwork, and your data is already live for the first Chișinău taxi app lookup.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Moldova eSIM runs on Orange Moldova, one of the country's main mobile operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds, which is plenty for maps, messaging, taxi apps and streaming the odd video. Chișinău, Bălți and Cahul all enjoy strong 4G, while quieter back roads and steppe villages drop down to 3G. That mix covers everyday travel needs comfortably.

Orange Moldova covers Chișinău, Bălți, Tiraspol, Comrat and the main M1 and M3 road corridors. Chișinău, Bălți and Cahul have strong 4G, the wine country at Cricova, Mileștii Mici and Purcari is well served, and Orheiul Vechi has 4G at the main sites with 3G on back roads. Gagauzia drops to 3G in steppe villages, and the rural north of Bălți along the Ukrainian border is thinner, so pack offline maps if you're self-driving small roads.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code provided to install the line on your phone. Do this at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic on arrival: when you land at Chișinău International and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst line registers on Orange Moldova. Arriving overland from Romania at Leușeni or Sculeni works too, once a Moldovan tower picks up your phone. Turn off data roaming on your home line first.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support, look on an iPhone under Settings then General then About for an EID number, or in your Android network settings. If the EID shows up and your handset is unlocked, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A weekend in Chișinău fits easily in 2 GB. A week covering Chișinău, Orheiul Vechi, a winery tour and a Tiraspol day trip sits on 3 to 5 GB. Two-week trips combining Moldova with Romania or Ukraine-adjacent routes should size 5 to 10 GB for the Moldovan portion, with a separate eSIM for the neighbouring country. Remote workers in Chișinău for a month should go for 10 GB or higher.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. It's handy for getting work done from a Chișinău café when the co-working Wi-Fi wobbles during a power event, or for keeping everyone online on a winery day out. Remember that hotspot use draws down your data faster, so size your plan with a little headroom if you plan to tether often.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem in Moldova, where Viber is particularly common and WhatsApp is used by winery guides, guesthouse hosts and tour operators. You can call and message freely over the internet using those apps or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone and keeps your usual number.

Usually, yes. Moldova is not in the EU, so roam-like-home doesn't apply, and most EU and UK carriers charge €5 to €10 per day on their non-EU bundles, while US carriers typically charge around $10. A Blikst eSIM for a week comes in well below any of those. Local Orange or Moldcell SIMs are sold at Chișinău International but require passport registration, whereas your Blikst line is already live the moment you land, with no kiosk paperwork.
