The Blikst Malaysia eSIM runs on Maxis with partner roaming across Digi, Celcom and U Mobile, so you are spread across all four of Malaysia's major operators. You get up to 5G where it's available and solid 4G almost everywhere else. Expect dense 5G across the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, with dependable 4G through most of the rest of the peninsula and coastal Borneo.
Kuala Lumpur (KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Bangsar, Mont Kiara, Petaling Jaya) has dense 5G, as do George Town and Batu Ferringhi in Penang. Johor Bahru, the Legoland corridor and the PLUS north-south highway are well covered, and Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Sandakan get 4G. Be honest with yourself about the gaps: the Cameron Highlands tea plantations and Mossy Forest thin out, Mount Kinabalu's summit is offline, and deep jungle like the Maliau Basin and inland island areas on Tioman and the Perhentians have no service.
Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Scan the QR code to install the profile while you're still at home on Wi-Fi. Activation is automatic on arrival: land at KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching or Langkawi, switch airplane mode off, and Maxis picks you up. From KLIA the KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes, though Grab and taxis work too.
Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list before you buy. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To confirm eSIM support, on an iPhone go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android the option sits in your network or SIM settings. If you see it, you're good to go.
It depends on your trip. A 3-day KL or Penang weekend is comfortable on 2 GB. A one-week peninsular loop taking in KL, Penang and the Cameron Highlands suits about 5 GB. A two-week trip that includes Borneo is better on 10 GB. If you're a digital nomad settling in KL, Penang or Langkawi for a month, plan on 20 GB, or 50 GB if you tether heavily. Maps and ride-hailing are the main daily drain.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. Do bear in mind the fair usage policy that keeps the network running well for everyone: unlimited plans carry a high-speed allowance of 50 GB a month, after which you stay fully unlimited at up to 10 Mbps. For heavy work in Borneo or remote lodges, lean on the lodge Wi-Fi, as the eSIM is best for WhatsApp and maps around town.
These are data-only plans, so they don't come with a Malaysian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Grab's in-app chat, which is how most visitors stay in touch anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone to keep your own number active for anything important.
It's far cheaper than roaming. US and European carriers typically charge $10 to $12 a day in Malaysia, which adds up fast. Local tourist SIMs from Maxis Hotlink, Digi, Celcom and U Mobile at KLIA run MYR 15 to 50 (around $3 to $11) for 7 to 30 day packs, which is excellent value if you don't mind queuing and registering on the spot. A Blikst eSIM installs before you fly, so for business travellers, transit passengers or anyone who'd rather skip the arrival queue, the small premium is worth it.
