Description

Malaysia is a genuinely easy country to move around — KL's KLIA Ekspres gets you from the airport to the city in 28 minutes, trains and buses connect the peninsula, and flights to Borneo are cheap. Mobile networks are equally strong. A Blikst Malaysia eSIM runs on Maxis with partner roaming across Digi, Celcom and U Mobile, giving you up to 5G service across the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, with solid 4G through most of the rest of the peninsula and coastal Borneo.

Where Maxis and partners cover

Kuala Lumpur (KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Bangsar, Mont Kiara, Petaling Jaya) has dense 5G. Penang's George Town and the Batu Ferringhi coast have 5G and strong 4G. Johor Bahru, the Legoland corridor, and the causeway to Singapore are covered. The PLUS highway north–south (the E1/E2) has consistent 4G along the whole spine. Cameron Highlands (Tanah Rata, Brinchang) has 4G in town; the tea plantations and Mossy Forest drop to thinner service. Langkawi's Kuah, Pantai Cenang and Datai Bay are covered. On Borneo, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Sandakan, and the Kinabatangan River lodges have 4G at the lodges and near the main towns; deep jungle areas (Maliau Basin, Ulu Temburong though that's Brunei) are offline. Tioman and Perhentian islands have 4G near the main jetties and dive shops; inland jungles are thin.

Cost vs. Maxis Hotlink or Digi tourist SIM

Maxis Hotlink, Digi, Celcom, and U Mobile all sell tourist prepaid SIMs at KLIA for MYR 15–50 ($3–$11) for 7–30 day data packs. Excellent value if you're happy queuing at the counter and registering on the spot. A Blikst eSIM installs before you fly — for business travellers, transit passengers, or anyone who values skipping arrival queues, it's worth the small premium. US and European carriers roaming in Malaysia typically charge $10–$12 per day.

Arrival at KLIA, KLIA2, or Kota Kinabalu

Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi. Land at KLIA (KUL) or KLIA2 (for AirAsia and LCC flights), Penang (PEN), Kota Kinabalu (BKI), Kuching (KCH), or Langkawi (LGK), switch airplane mode off, and Maxis picks up. KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral is the fastest city transfer; taxis and Grab work too. KLIA2 is connected to KLIA by an 8-minute shuttle train. Kota Kinabalu airport is 15 minutes from the city.

Apps you'll actually use

  • Grab — dominates ride-hail, food delivery, and QR payments across Malaysia. The default app for visitors.
  • Touch 'n Go eWallet — Malaysia's major mobile payment wallet, used for tolls, transit, and shops. A physical Touch 'n Go card is useful too.
  • MyRapid — KL's public transit app for MRT, LRT, Monorail, BRT and buses. The MRT Kajang Line and Putrajaya Line cover most tourist areas.
  • KTMB — Malaysian state railways for ETS trains (KL–Ipoh–Butterworth).
  • Klook and 12Go — tickets for attractions, buses, and ferries (Langkawi, Tioman, Perhentian).
  • FoodPanda and ShopeeFood — food delivery competitors to Grab.
  • Google Maps and Waze — both work; Waze is heavily used in KL for traffic routing.

Borneo, islands, and Singapore crossing

If your trip includes Borneo (Kota Kinabalu, Kinabatangan, Mulu caves), expect lodge Wi-Fi for any heavy data work; the eSIM handles WhatsApp with your guide and maps around town. Mount Kinabalu summit is offline. Sipadan and Mabul diving — operator Wi-Fi only, in-water is obviously offline. The Singapore causeway at Johor Bahru: your Malaysia plan stops working once you're past Singapore immigration — pick up a Singapore plan separately. Langkawi, Perhentian and Tioman jetties are covered; some beaches and dive sites are not.

Plan sizing

A 3-day KL or Penang weekend — 2 GB. A one-week peninsular Malaysia loop (KL, Penang, Cameron Highlands) — 5 GB. Two-week trip including Borneo — 10 GB. Digital nomads in KL, Penang or Langkawi for a month — 20 GB, or 50 GB with heavy tethering.

Install before you fly, land at KLIA or BKI, and skip the prepaid counter entirely.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Malaysia eSIM runs on Maxis with partner roaming across Digi, Celcom and U Mobile, so you are spread across all four of Malaysia's major operators. You get up to 5G where it's available and solid 4G almost everywhere else. Expect dense 5G across the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, with dependable 4G through most of the rest of the peninsula and coastal Borneo.

Kuala Lumpur (KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Bangsar, Mont Kiara, Petaling Jaya) has dense 5G, as do George Town and Batu Ferringhi in Penang. Johor Bahru, the Legoland corridor and the PLUS north-south highway are well covered, and Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Sandakan get 4G. Be honest with yourself about the gaps: the Cameron Highlands tea plantations and Mossy Forest thin out, Mount Kinabalu's summit is offline, and deep jungle like the Maliau Basin and inland island areas on Tioman and the Perhentians have no service.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Scan the QR code to install the profile while you're still at home on Wi-Fi. Activation is automatic on arrival: land at KLIA, KLIA2, Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching or Langkawi, switch airplane mode off, and Maxis picks you up. From KLIA the KLIA Ekspres reaches KL Sentral in 28 minutes, though Grab and taxis work too.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list before you buy. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To confirm eSIM support, on an iPhone go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android the option sits in your network or SIM settings. If you see it, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A 3-day KL or Penang weekend is comfortable on 2 GB. A one-week peninsular loop taking in KL, Penang and the Cameron Highlands suits about 5 GB. A two-week trip that includes Borneo is better on 10 GB. If you're a digital nomad settling in KL, Penang or Langkawi for a month, plan on 20 GB, or 50 GB if you tether heavily. Maps and ride-hailing are the main daily drain.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. Do bear in mind the fair usage policy that keeps the network running well for everyone: unlimited plans carry a high-speed allowance of 50 GB a month, after which you stay fully unlimited at up to 10 Mbps. For heavy work in Borneo or remote lodges, lean on the lodge Wi-Fi, as the eSIM is best for WhatsApp and maps around town.

These are data-only plans, so they don't come with a Malaysian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Grab's in-app chat, which is how most visitors stay in touch anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone to keep your own number active for anything important.

It's far cheaper than roaming. US and European carriers typically charge $10 to $12 a day in Malaysia, which adds up fast. Local tourist SIMs from Maxis Hotlink, Digi, Celcom and U Mobile at KLIA run MYR 15 to 50 (around $3 to $11) for 7 to 30 day packs, which is excellent value if you don't mind queuing and registering on the spot. A Blikst eSIM installs before you fly, so for business travellers, transit passengers or anyone who'd rather skip the arrival queue, the small premium is worth it.
