Description

Malawi runs on WhatsApp. Lodge bookings at Lake Malawi, pickup confirmations from Liwonde safari operators, and even change negotiations with minibus conductors all happen on the green-check app — and that's before you factor in the patchy shared Wi-Fi at most guesthouses. A Blikst Malawi eSIM puts your phone on Airtel Malawi, the country's largest mobile operator by subscriber base, with 3G / 4G coverage across Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, the lakeshore resorts, and the main M1 corridor running north to south.

Where Airtel's signal holds up

Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu all get reliable 4G. Lakeshore towns like Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Senga Bay and Monkey Bay have workable signal at most lodges, though the surrounding hills can drop you to 3G or EDGE. Liwonde and Majete National Parks have intermittent coverage near the main gates and camp clusters, effectively nothing deep in the bush. The Nyika Plateau, Mulanje Massif above the mid-altitude huts, and the Shire Valley's back roads are best treated as offline zones — download offline maps before you head up.

Cost vs. a local SIM or roaming

US and UK carriers typically charge around $10 per day to roam in Malawi, if they offer coverage at all. A Blikst eSIM on the Airtel network is a fraction of that across a full trip. You can also buy a physical Airtel SIM at Kamuzu International Airport, but you'll need your passport and some patience with the registration desk, and it only makes sense for stays of a month or more. For most two- to three-week trips, the eSIM wins on time alone.

Arrival and activation

Install the eSIM while you still have Wi-Fi at home — the QR scan needs internet. When you land at Lilongwe (LLW) or Chileka in Blantyre (BLZ), switch off airplane mode and the Blikst line should pick up Airtel's signal automatically. Turn off data roaming on your home line so it doesn't sneak on in the background. If you're flying in via Johannesburg or Addis and have a long layover, the plan won't activate until a Malawian tower registers it.

What you'll actually use data for

  • WhatsApp: Lodge owners, drivers, dive shops at Cape Maclear, and guides will all message you here. Budget for steady background use.
  • Maps: Google Maps covers main roads well but gets thin on secondary tracks — download offline regions for Liwonde, Nyika, and Mulanje in advance.
  • Mobile money: Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba are everywhere locally, but as a visitor you'll mostly pay cash or card. Keep data on if you're using Wise or Revolut for FX.
  • Currency and news: The kwacha moves; an app like XE plus a local news site helps you avoid getting caught out on exchange day.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-week lakeshore-plus-Liwonde trip works on roughly 3 GB if you're mostly on lodge Wi-Fi in the evenings. Two weeks covering Lilongwe, Cape Maclear, Liwonde and Mulanje is comfortable on 5–10 GB. Overland travellers spending three to four weeks crossing in from Zambia or Tanzania, using Maps and WhatsApp daily, should look at 10–20 GB. If you're remote working from Blantyre or Lilongwe for a month, go higher and expect 3G fallback during load-shedding windows when towers run on backup power.

Good to know

Malawi has scheduled power cuts — lodges and cafes often run generators or solar, but tower output can dip at peak demand. Expect occasional slow patches that aren't the eSIM's fault. Outside the main M1 spine, signal reflects population density, not distance to the capital.

Install before you fly, land at Lilongwe or Blantyre with a working line already on your phone, and skip the SIM desk. One QR code, Airtel Malawi underneath, and you're sorted from the airport gate to your first sunset on the lake.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Malawi eSIM puts your phone on Airtel Malawi, the country's largest mobile operator by subscriber base. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with reliable 4G in the bigger cities and 3G or EDGE fallback in hillier and more remote areas. During Malawi's scheduled power cuts, expect occasional slow patches when towers run on backup power rather than full mains supply.

Airtel's signal is reliable across Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu, plus the main M1 corridor running north to south. Lakeshore towns like Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay, Senga Bay and Monkey Bay have workable signal at most lodges, though surrounding hills can drop you to 3G or EDGE. Liwonde and Majete parks only have intermittent coverage near gates and camps. Treat the Nyika Plateau, upper Mulanje and the Shire Valley back roads as offline zones.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install it. Do this while you still have Wi-Fi at home, as the QR scan needs internet. The eSIM activates automatically when you arrive and a Malawian tower registers it, so when you land at Lilongwe or Blantyre, switch off airplane mode and turn off data roaming on your home line.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works flawlessly. Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android you will find eSIM options in the network settings. If in doubt, check before you travel.

It depends on your trip. A one-week lakeshore-plus-Liwonde trip works on roughly 3 GB if you are mostly on lodge Wi-Fi in the evenings. Two weeks covering Lilongwe, Cape Maclear, Liwonde and Mulanje is comfortable on 5 to 10 GB. Overland travellers spending three to four weeks and using Maps and WhatsApp daily should look at 10 to 20 GB. Remote workers staying a month should go higher and expect 3G fallback during load-shedding.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion's phone. This is handy given the patchy shared Wi-Fi at most guesthouses. Bear in mind Malawi has scheduled power cuts, and while lodges and cafes often run generators or solar, tower output can dip at peak demand, so expect the odd slow patch that is not the eSIM's fault.

This is a data-only plan, so it does not come with a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice Malawi runs on WhatsApp anyway, with lodge owners, drivers, dive shops at Cape Maclear and guides all messaging you there, and apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime let you call and message over the internet. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone and keeps your number.

Usually, yes. US and UK carriers typically charge around 10 dollars a day to roam in Malawi, if they offer coverage at all, while a Blikst eSIM on Airtel is a fraction of that across a full trip. You can buy a physical Airtel SIM at Kamuzu International Airport, but you will need your passport and patience at the registration desk, and it only makes sense for stays of a month or more.
