Description

Jordan's tourist circuit — Amman, Jerash, the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, and Petra — is short on distance but heavy on logistics. Bedouin camp pickups, Petra ticket upgrades to the By Night event, and the Jordan Pass activation all depend on WhatsApp messages or app confirmations. A Blikst Jordan eSIM runs on the Zain network (Zain Jordan, the country's largest operator by subscribers), with 4G across Amman, Aqaba, and the main highways, and 3G backfill in the desert and the Jordan Valley. Install before you fly, land at Queen Alia International (AMM) or King Hussein International (AQJ) in Aqaba, and skip the SIM kiosk near baggage claim.

Where Zain reaches

Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, Madaba, and Aqaba all carry 4G consistently. The Desert Highway (Route 15) between Amman and Aqaba is covered throughout; the King's Highway (Route 35) along Wadi Mujib and Karak is more uneven but mostly 4G. Wadi Rum has 3G-to-4G near Rum village and the visitor centre, and signal tapers off as you move deeper into the desert — camps 30 minutes in are often offline. The Dana Biosphere Reserve and the canyon floors of Wadi Mujib and Wadi Ghuweir are mostly offline by design. Petra has 4G at the visitor centre and the upper siq; signal thins in the back canyons toward the Monastery.

Cost vs. the airport SIM counter

Tourist SIMs at AMM are well-priced — Zain, Orange, and Umniah all sell 7- and 14-day passes — but the queue after a late Royal Jordanian or Emirates arrival is often long. A Blikst eSIM skips the queue and sits on the same Zain infrastructure. Against US or EU roaming at $10–$12 per day, a 15-day 5 GB plan lands well below two days of those charges.

Arrival and the drive to Amman

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. Queen Alia International is 32 km south of Amman; the Airport Express bus and taxi options both need you online to confirm rates and hotel addresses. Switch off airplane mode after landing, and the Blikst line registers on Zain automatically. Most hotels in Amman's Jabal Amman, Abdoun, and downtown areas use WhatsApp to confirm arrival times with drivers — the eSIM keeps that working from the taxi rank.

Apps and habits here

  • Careem and Uber: Both operate in Amman and Aqaba. Careem tends to have better driver supply in Amman; Uber's pricing is sometimes lower. Both are dramatically cheaper than negotiated white-taxi fares from the airport.
  • Jordan Pass: Pre-paid online, activates at your first attraction. Keep the QR code accessible — data lets you re-download it if your phone resets. Covers Petra, Jerash, Wadi Rum entry, and 40+ other sites.
  • WhatsApp: Bedouin camps at Wadi Rum, boat tour operators at Aqaba, and most guides confirm everything through WhatsApp. SMS is a distant second.
  • Google Maps: Solid for the main highways and Amman's circles. Some old-city addresses in Jabal Amman are landmark-based rather than numbered — a pinned location beats a street address every time.

Plan sizing

A classic one-week Jordan loop (Amman–Jerash–Dead Sea–Petra–Wadi Rum–Aqaba) works on 3–5 GB with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Ten-day itineraries that add Dana or the Jordan Trail push 5–10 GB, because trekkers lean more on mobile data between refuges. Two-week combined Jordan-and-Israel or Jordan-and-Egypt trips typically use 10 GB or more, though this plan only covers the Jordan legs — pick up a regional eSIM if you're crossing the Wadi Araba or Allenby borders. Cruise passengers in Aqaba for a day can use 1 GB easily.

Install the eSIM before you fly. Land at Queen Alia with data already live, hand the driver your hotel address in Abdoun or Jabal Amman, and skip the airport SIM booth entirely. One QR code, a Zain line, and a working connection from arrivals to the Monastery steps at Petra.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Jordan eSIM runs on the Zain network (Zain Jordan), the country's largest operator by subscribers. You get 4G across Amman, Aqaba and the main highways, with 3G backfill in the desert and the Jordan Valley where the network thins out. It sits on the same Zain infrastructure as the tourist SIMs sold at the airport, so coverage is identical without the kiosk queue.

Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, Madaba and Aqaba all carry 4G consistently, and the Desert Highway (Route 15) between Amman and Aqaba is covered throughout. The King's Highway (Route 35) past Wadi Mujib and Karak is more uneven but mostly 4G. Be honest with yourself about the wild bits: Wadi Rum has signal near Rum village and the visitor centre but camps 30 minutes in are often offline, and the Dana reserve and the Wadi Mujib canyon floors are mostly offline by design.

After you buy, you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details within minutes, including a QR code. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi by scanning that code in your phone's settings. Activation is automatic on arrival in Jordan, so once you land at Queen Alia (AMM) or King Hussein in Aqaba (AQJ) and switch off airplane mode, the Blikst line registers on Zain by itself. There is no need to visit the SIM booth near baggage claim.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it is worth checking our detailed compatibility list before you buy. As a quick test, your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable: on an iPhone look under Settings, General, About for an EID number, and on Android check the network or SIM settings. If you find an EID and your handset is unlocked, you are almost certainly good to go.

It depends on your trip. A classic one-week loop of Amman, Jerash, the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba works on 3 to 5 GB with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Ten-day itineraries that add Dana or the Jordan Trail push 5 to 10 GB, as trekkers lean harder on mobile data. A day in Aqaba off a cruise uses 1 GB easily. Two-week trips combining Israel or Egypt typically need 10 GB or more, but this plan only covers the Jordan legs.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion's phone. That is handy for confirming Bedouin camp pickups or Jordan Pass details on a second device. Keep in mind that hotspotting drains data faster, and coverage follows Zain's footprint, so a hotspot deep inside Wadi Rum or on a canyon floor may have little or no signal to share.

This is a data-only plan, so it does not come with a local Jordanian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a problem here, since Bedouin camps, Aqaba boat operators and most guides confirm everything over WhatsApp, with apps like FaceTime working equally well over the data. Because an eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone and keep your usual number active for any essential texts.

Against US or EU roaming at around 10 to 12 dollars a day, the maths is easy: a 15-day 5 GB plan lands well below just two days of those charges. The airport tourist SIMs from Zain, Orange and Umniah are well priced too, but the queue after a late Royal Jordanian or Emirates arrival is often long. A Blikst eSIM skips that queue while sitting on the very same Zain network.
