Description

Indonesia is roughly 5,000 kilometres of archipelago, and the mobile-data situation varies almost as much as the geography. Bali's Gojek drivers, Java's GrabCar pickups, and Lombok's surf-camp WhatsApp groups all assume you have a working line the moment you clear immigration. A Blikst Indonesia eSIM runs on the Hutchison network (Tri Indonesia, part of CK Hutchison and merged with Indosat Ooredoo into Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison), with 4G across Bali, Java, and the main cities on Sumatra and Sulawesi, and 5G in selected urban zones. Install before you fly, land at Bali–Ngurah Rai (DPS), Jakarta–Soekarno-Hatta (CGK), Yogyakarta (YIA), or Lombok (LOP), and skip the SIM booth in arrivals.

Where Tri/Indosat reaches

Denpasar, Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur, and Uluwatu all carry 4G and often 5G in the busier zones. Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Semarang have full 5G. Lombok's west coast (Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta Lombok) has 4G; the Gili Islands have 4G at the main settlements but rely partly on microwave backhaul that can slow under peak load. Komodo (Labuan Bajo) has 4G in the town and patchy coverage on liveaboard routes — expect extended offline stretches on the boats. Raja Ampat, the Banda Islands, and remote Sulawesi dive sites are largely offline. Java's interior rice-terrace villages and Sumatra's jungle belt around Bukit Lawang drop to 3G or nothing.

Cost vs. local SIM kiosks in arrivals

SIM booths at DPS and CGK sell tourist SIMs with passport registration for around 100,000–200,000 IDR ($6–$13). They work, but scams at the non-official kiosks (especially the informal Bali stalls outside the terminal) are well-documented — overcharging and short-GB packs are common. A Blikst eSIM avoids all of that. US or EU roaming at $10–$12 per day turns a two-week Indonesia trip into a $140+ surcharge; a 15-day 10 GB plan saves you most of that.

Arrival at Ngurah Rai or Soekarno-Hatta

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. Bali's DPS to Seminyak or Ubud is a 30–90 minute drive depending on traffic — Gojek and Grab both work from the designated pickup zone, but you need data before you book. Jakarta's CGK to the city centre is similar: the airport train goes to Sudirman, but your Grab or Gojek ride home needs a live line. Switch off airplane mode after landing and the Blikst line registers on Tri/Indosat automatically.

Apps that matter in Indonesia

  • Gojek and Grab: Dominant super-apps. Gojek is Indonesian and has deeper coverage in smaller cities; Grab is regional (Singapore-based) and often better for English-language UX. Both do ride-hailing, food delivery (GoFood, GrabFood), and parcel services. Both are vastly cheaper than hotel taxi ranks.
  • GoPay, OVO, DANA: Indonesian digital wallets. Tourists can sometimes link them but more commonly pay drivers in cash or via card. Having the apps visible helps you pay market vendors who only take QR codes.
  • Google Maps: Reliable for Bali, Java's major cities, and the main roads. Ubud's back-lane villa addresses are often mis-routed — pin from your host before driving. Rural Lombok and eastern islands can have stale data.
  • WhatsApp: Every villa host, surf instructor, dive operator, and yoga studio runs on WhatsApp. SMS is rarely used.

Plan sizing

A one-week Bali-only trip with villa Wi-Fi works on 5 GB. A two-week Bali + Lombok or Bali + Java combo fits 10 GB. Three weeks that add Yogyakarta, Komodo, and maybe a Sulawesi dive stop sit at 15–20 GB. Digital nomads in Canggu, Ubud, or Bali's co-working spaces for a month should pick 30 GB or more — 4G is fast enough that streaming adds up quickly. Surfers uploading GoPro footage should double that.

Install the eSIM before boarding. Land at DPS, CGK, YIA, or LOP with the Tri/Indosat line already provisioned, open Grab or Gojek, and skip the SIM-booth negotiation. One QR code, a 4G connection across the main islands, and a working line from immigration to the first nasi campur at a warung in Ubud.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Indonesia eSIM runs on the Hutchison network — that's Tri Indonesia, part of CK Hutchison and now merged with Indosat Ooredoo into Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. You get 4G across Bali, Java, and the main cities on Sumatra and Sulawesi, with 5G in selected urban zones such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Semarang, plus busier parts of Bali.

Coverage is strong across Bali — Denpasar, Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur and Uluwatu all carry 4G and often 5G. Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Semarang have full 5G. Lombok's west coast runs 4G. Be honest with your plans, though: the Gili Islands can slow under load, Labuan Bajo liveaboard routes go offline for stretches, and Raja Ampat, the Banda Islands, remote Sulawesi dive sites and Sumatra's Bukit Lawang jungle belt are largely offline or drop to 3G.

After you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details within minutes. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi before you fly by scanning the QR code provided — that adds the digital line to your phone. The eSIM activates automatically on arrival in Indonesia: land at Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK), Yogyakarta (YIA) or Lombok (LOP), switch off airplane mode, and the line registers on Tri/Indosat by itself. No SIM booth needed.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list before you buy. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To confirm eSIM support, on an iPhone look under Settings, General, About for an EID number; on Android, check the network or SIM settings for an eSIM option. If you see those, you're good to go.

It depends on your route. A one-week Bali-only trip with villa Wi-Fi works comfortably on 5 GB. A two-week Bali plus Lombok or Bali plus Java combo fits around 10 GB. Three weeks adding Yogyakarta, Komodo and maybe a Sulawesi dive stop sit at 15 to 20 GB. Digital nomads settling in Canggu or Ubud for a month should pick 30 GB or more — 4G is quick, so streaming adds up. Surfers uploading GoPro footage should roughly double that.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion's phone. That's handy for working from a Canggu co-working space or keeping a partner online while you book a Gojek. Just remember that hotspot use draws on the same data allowance, so a heavy streaming or backup session through tethering will eat into your plan faster than browsing on the phone alone.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a local Indonesian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's no problem here — every villa host, surf instructor and dive operator runs on WhatsApp rather than SMS. You can call and message freely over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone, keeping your usual number reachable.

Usually, yes. US or EU roaming at $10 to $12 a day turns a two-week trip into a $140-plus surcharge, while a 15-day 10 GB plan saves you most of that. Airport SIM booths at DPS and CGK sell tourist SIMs with passport registration for around 100,000 to 200,000 IDR ($6 to $13), but the informal Bali stalls outside the terminal are well known for overcharging and short-GB packs. A Blikst eSIM skips both the scams and the queue.
