Description

Vatican City is 44 hectares, the world's smallest sovereign state, and fully surrounded by Rome — which means most mobile networks treat it as a quiet cell inside Italy without anyone really noticing. A Blikst Holy See eSIM runs on Vodafone at 4G / 5G speeds, which in practice covers both Vatican City itself and the surrounding Roman districts you'll walk through to get there.

What "Vatican coverage" actually means

Vatican City doesn't have its own separate mobile infrastructure in the way a regular country does; coverage inside St Peter's Square, the Vatican Museums, and the Vatican Gardens comes from Italian carriers' towers pointed across the walls. Vodafone Italy has strong 4G and 5G throughout Rome, and the Vatican gets that same signal. Expect full 4G / 5G in St Peter's Square and most of the museum route. The Sistine Chapel — being a deep interior space — weakens to 3G or intermittent signal. The deeper galleries in the Pinacoteca occasionally drop out.

Why a separate plan, and what it covers

Technically speaking, this plan is aimed at Vatican City as a destination but practically any traveller visiting the Holy See is also spending time in Rome — and that's where the plan works in day-to-day use. EU travellers with "roam like home" plans usually already have free data across Italy and the Vatican, so a separate eSIM isn't always needed. For UK, US, and non-EU travellers, home-carrier roaming in Italy is typically $10–$12/day; a short Blikst plan for a Rome + Vatican weekend undercuts that easily.

Arrival and getting to the Vatican

You'll fly into Rome — Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) — not the Vatican itself (it has no airport). Install the eSIM profile before you leave. FCO has decent Wi-Fi; CIA is budget-airline heavy and the Wi-Fi reflects that. The Leonardo Express train to Termini, the Metro A line to Ottaviano, and any taxi or Uber ride keeps Vodafone signal the whole way. The line activates on your first Italian tower registration.

Apps useful for a Vatican visit

  • Vatican Museums official app: Tickets, timed entries, and the museum map. Queues at the door without a pre-booked slot can be 90+ minutes; the app is essentially required for efficient visits.
  • Google Maps: Rome street-level detail is excellent. Walking routes from Ottaviano metro to St Peter's Square are short and well-signposted.
  • Rick Steves Audio Europe or Rome Free Walking Tour apps: Many travellers do self-guided audio walks through the basilica and square. Download content before you enter the Sistine Chapel — signal is weak there.
  • ATAC Roma: Rome's metro/bus/tram app. Tickets, routes, and disruption alerts.
  • FreeNow and Uber: Both work in Rome. FreeNow is better integrated with licensed Roman taxis.

Dress code, security, and practical notes

Entering St Peter's Basilica and the museums requires covered shoulders and knees — security will turn you away otherwise. Data isn't strictly required for this but it helps — some travellers order clothing on the fly via Amazon same-day to their hotel when they've forgotten the dress code. Papal audiences on Wednesdays in St Peter's Square require free tickets booked in advance via the Prefecture of the Papal Household; your data plan handles the confirmation emails and the reservation pickup.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-day Vatican visit as part of a Rome city break: 500 MB–1 GB is ample. A long weekend focused on Rome including the Vatican: 2–3 GB. A one-week Rome stay with the Vatican, multiple museum days, and evening wandering: 5 GB. Pilgrimages or extended study trips of two weeks or more: 10 GB — Rome's café and hotel Wi-Fi fills the gaps when you're settled in one place.

Install before you fly, clear Roman customs with a live line, and walk into St Peter's Square already connected to the ticket app and the map — no need to hunt a Wi-Fi hotspot on Via della Conciliazione.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
