The Blikst Greece eSIM runs on Vodafone-Panafon, one of the country's top two carriers. You get 4G and 5G speeds, with 5G live in the central zones of Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and Heraklion, and solid 4G across most tourist areas and island interiors. That keeps you connected for ferry schedules, maps and WhatsApp from the moment you land at Athens or an island airport.
Coverage spans Athens, Thessaloniki and most of the Cyclades, Dodecanese and Ionian islands. Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu and Crete have 4G across tourist areas. Smaller islands like Milos, Naxos, Paros and Amorgos have good 4G in the main chora and busy beaches, but it gets patchier on remote trails like the Sifnos footpaths or far west Folegandros. Ferries hold signal near ports and shipping lanes, but drop out in open Aegean water mid-crossing.
Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then scan the QR code to install the profile over Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic: when you land at Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini or Mykonos and switch off airplane mode, the line registers on Vodafone-Panafon by itself. Toggle data roaming off on your home SIM. If you connect through another EU country first, the plan stays dormant until a Greek tower sees it.
Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To verify eSIM support, look on an iPhone under Settings, General, About for an EID number, or check the network settings on Android. If you see an EID, you are good to go.
It depends on your trip. A one-week Athens plus one island visit works on 3 to 5 GB. A classic two-week Cyclades hop taking in Santorini, Naxos, Milos and Paros fits 10 GB comfortably. Longer three-week itineraries including Crete or the Ionian islands benefit from 20 GB, especially if you are uploading photos or hot-spotting a laptop on ferry days. Remote workers staying a month in Athens or Paros should consider 50 GB or higher.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share the connection with a laptop or tablet. This is handy on ferry days when you want to work between ports, though bear in mind that hot-spotting a laptop eats data faster, which is why the longer three-week and remote-worker plans suggest 20 to 50 GB or more. Most Greek hotels and even beach tavernas have free Wi-Fi, so save big photo backups for the overnight hotel connection.
This is a data plan, so it does not come with a Greek phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a problem, because Greek hotels, Airbnb hosts and transfer drivers all default to WhatsApp over SMS. You can call and message freely over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Your eSIM is a separate digital line, so your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone, just with data roaming switched off.
Usually, yes, though it depends where you are from. EU travellers with roam-like-home already covered by their domestic plan may not need it, so check your allowance first. UK travellers post-Brexit often face two to six pounds per day in roaming charges, and US travellers pay around ten to twelve dollars per day. Airport SIMs at Athens or Heraklion need your passport and eat time after a long flight. A Blikst plan lands active and skips all of that.
