Description

Ghana is one of the easier West African countries to travel in — stable, English-speaking, and increasingly well-connected — but the airport SIM situation at Kotoka is still a queue-with-your-passport affair that most visitors would rather skip after a red-eye from London, JFK, or Addis. A Blikst Ghana eSIM runs on Vodafone Ghana (now operating as Telecel Ghana following the 2023 acquisition, but still commonly referred to as Vodafone), with 3G and 4G coverage across Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tamale, and most of the populated south.

Where the network reaches

Accra and its suburbs — East Legon, Osu, Cantonments, Madina — have reliable 4G. Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi have solid coverage in urban centres. The coastal belt through Cape Coast, Elmina, and Ada has good 4G along the main Accra-Takoradi road. The Volta Region, Mole National Park, and the far north around Bolgatanga and Navrongo drop to 3G in many stretches, with decent coverage in district capitals and thinner connectivity in villages. Mole's safari tracks have patchy signal near the motel and lodge but very little deeper into the park. Plan accordingly if you're self-driving rural routes.

Cost vs. local SIMs

You can buy a MTN or Telecel SIM at Kotoka International for about ¢30–¢50, but SIM-registration rules require your passport and, ideally, a local Ghanaian address — workable, but slow. US and UK carriers typically charge $10–$12 per day for Ghana roaming. A Blikst plan sits on the same Vodafone/Telecel backbone and activates when you land. For a two-week Ghana trip, you'll save substantially over daily roaming.

Activation when you land

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before departure. Land at Kotoka International (ACC), switch off airplane mode, and the plan registers on Vodafone/Telecel automatically. The airport taxi ride into Osu or Airport Residential is usually your first test of the connection — about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic, long enough to confirm everything works.

Data habits in Ghana

  • WhatsApp: The default for everything — tour operators, guest houses, drivers, even some government offices. Ghanaian businesses run on WhatsApp Business widely.
  • Uber and Bolt: Both work well in Accra and Kumasi. Bolt tends to have better driver density around Osu and Airport Residential; Uber is sometimes cheaper.
  • MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash: Mobile money is dominant in Ghana — far more common than card payments outside hotels. Your eSIM keeps the apps working if you set up a wallet with a local helper.
  • Google Maps: Fine in cities. Rural routes are often mapped but trotro (shared van) stops and minor tracks aren't. Confirm with locals.
  • Trotro and Bolt Food: Bolt Food delivers in Accra and parts of Kumasi. Useful on a lazy evening.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-week Accra business trip with weekend day trips to Cape Coast and Kakum fits 3–5 GB. A two-week overland itinerary covering Accra, the coast, Kumasi, and Mole comfortably uses 10 GB. Month-long volunteering or research stays in Accra typically fit in 20 GB, more with heavy video calls. Overlanders coming from Côte d'Ivoire or Togo and moving on should size for the Ghana leg specifically — regional West Africa eSIMs are a better fit for multi-country trips.

Practical notes

Most hotels and guesthouses in Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast have Wi-Fi, though speeds vary. In the north and at wildlife lodges, your eSIM may be the only connection. Power cuts (dumsor) still happen occasionally — a portable battery is worth having. Install the eSIM profile before you fly, keep your home SIM off to avoid incidental roaming, and land at Kotoka already connected to the Vodafone/Telecel network.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Ghana eSIM runs on Vodafone Ghana, which now operates as Telecel Ghana after the 2023 acquisition but is still commonly called Vodafone. You get 3G and 4G speeds, so in the cities you can expect reliable 4G for maps, calls over the internet and everyday browsing, dropping back to 3G in more rural and remote stretches of the country.

Coverage spans Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tamale and most of the populated south. Accra and suburbs like East Legon, Osu, Cantonments and Madina have reliable 4G, with solid urban coverage in Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi, and good 4G along the coast through Cape Coast, Elmina and Ada. Be honest with yourself about the Volta Region, Mole National Park and the far north around Bolgatanga and Navrongo, which drop to 3G in many places. Mole's safari tracks are patchy near the lodges and thin deeper in.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Install the profile over Wi-Fi before you fly by scanning the QR code provided. The plan activates automatically: land at Kotoka International, switch off airplane mode and it registers on the Vodafone/Telecel network on its own. The 30 to 45 minute taxi ride into Osu or Airport Residential is usually your first test that everything is working.

Most modern smartphones work flawlessly with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android it's in the network or SIM settings. If you see an EID, you're almost certainly good to go.

It depends on your trip. A one-week Accra business trip with weekend day trips to Cape Coast and Kakum fits comfortably in 3 to 5 GB. A two-week overland itinerary covering Accra, the coast, Kumasi and Mole uses around 10 GB. Month-long volunteering or research stays in Accra typically fit 20 GB, more if you do heavy video calls. WhatsApp and maps are the steady drains, so size up if you live on either.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. This is genuinely handy in the north and at wildlife lodges, where your eSIM may be the only connection going. One practical tip: power cuts, known locally as dumsor, still happen occasionally, so carry a portable battery to keep your phone and anything you're tethering topped up.

This is a data plan, so it doesn't come with a local Ghanaian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's fine, because Ghana runs on WhatsApp for tour operators, guest houses, drivers and even some offices, and you can call or video over the internet with WhatsApp or FaceTime. Your eSIM is a separate digital line, so your home SIM and number can stay in the phone. Keep that home SIM switched off to avoid incidental roaming charges.

Usually, yes. US and UK carriers typically charge around 10 to 12 dollars a day for Ghana roaming, which adds up fast. A local MTN or Telecel SIM at Kotoka costs about 30 to 50 cedis, but registration rules want your passport and ideally a local address, so it's a slow, queue-with-your-passport affair. A Blikst plan sits on the same Vodafone/Telecel backbone, activates when you land, and over a two-week trip saves you substantially against daily roaming.
