Description

Ghana is one of the easier West African countries to travel in — stable, English-speaking, and increasingly well-connected — but the airport SIM situation at Kotoka is still a queue-with-your-passport affair that most visitors would rather skip after a red-eye from London, JFK, or Addis. A Blikst Ghana eSIM runs on Vodafone Ghana (now operating as Telecel Ghana following the 2023 acquisition, but still commonly referred to as Vodafone), with 3G and 4G coverage across Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tamale, and most of the populated south.

Where the network reaches

Accra and its suburbs — East Legon, Osu, Cantonments, Madina — have reliable 4G. Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi have solid coverage in urban centres. The coastal belt through Cape Coast, Elmina, and Ada has good 4G along the main Accra-Takoradi road. The Volta Region, Mole National Park, and the far north around Bolgatanga and Navrongo drop to 3G in many stretches, with decent coverage in district capitals and thinner connectivity in villages. Mole's safari tracks have patchy signal near the motel and lodge but very little deeper into the park. Plan accordingly if you're self-driving rural routes.

Cost vs. local SIMs

You can buy a MTN or Telecel SIM at Kotoka International for about ¢30–¢50, but SIM-registration rules require your passport and, ideally, a local Ghanaian address — workable, but slow. US and UK carriers typically charge $10–$12 per day for Ghana roaming. A Blikst plan sits on the same Vodafone/Telecel backbone and activates when you land. For a two-week Ghana trip, you'll save substantially over daily roaming.

Activation when you land

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before departure. Land at Kotoka International (ACC), switch off airplane mode, and the plan registers on Vodafone/Telecel automatically. The airport taxi ride into Osu or Airport Residential is usually your first test of the connection — about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic, long enough to confirm everything works.

Data habits in Ghana

  • WhatsApp: The default for everything — tour operators, guest houses, drivers, even some government offices. Ghanaian businesses run on WhatsApp Business widely.
  • Uber and Bolt: Both work well in Accra and Kumasi. Bolt tends to have better driver density around Osu and Airport Residential; Uber is sometimes cheaper.
  • MTN MoMo and Telecel Cash: Mobile money is dominant in Ghana — far more common than card payments outside hotels. Your eSIM keeps the apps working if you set up a wallet with a local helper.
  • Google Maps: Fine in cities. Rural routes are often mapped but trotro (shared van) stops and minor tracks aren't. Confirm with locals.
  • Trotro and Bolt Food: Bolt Food delivers in Accra and parts of Kumasi. Useful on a lazy evening.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-week Accra business trip with weekend day trips to Cape Coast and Kakum fits 3–5 GB. A two-week overland itinerary covering Accra, the coast, Kumasi, and Mole comfortably uses 10 GB. Month-long volunteering or research stays in Accra typically fit in 20 GB, more with heavy video calls. Overlanders coming from Côte d'Ivoire or Togo and moving on should size for the Ghana leg specifically — regional West Africa eSIMs are a better fit for multi-country trips.

Practical notes

Most hotels and guesthouses in Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast have Wi-Fi, though speeds vary. In the north and at wildlife lodges, your eSIM may be the only connection. Power cuts (dumsor) still happen occasionally — a portable battery is worth having. Install the eSIM profile before you fly, keep your home SIM off to avoid incidental roaming, and land at Kotoka already connected to the Vodafone/Telecel network.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
