The Blikst French Guiana eSIM runs on Outremer, the local operator that is part of Orange Caraïbe. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with solid 4G across the populated coastal areas. It is built for the towns and the coastal strip rather than the deep interior, so expect dependable speeds where Outremer actually reaches and patchy or no signal further inland.
Coverage is strongest along the coast: Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly, Matoury near the airport, and the towns from Kourou through Sinnamary and Iracoubo to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. Kourou, including the Centre Spatial Guyanais viewing areas, is reliable, and the RN1 has near-continuous 4G in populated stretches. Be honest with yourself about the interior, though: the Amazon forest, the Maroni and Oyapock rivers, inland Amerindian villages, Camp Canopée and the Kaw marshes are sparse to offline. The Îles du Salut catch some coastal signal but it isn't guaranteed.
Right after you buy, you get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes minutes. Install the profile by scanning the QR code while you're on Wi-Fi before you fly, ideally on your connection through Paris or via Guadeloupe and Martinique. The plan activates automatically on arrival: land at Cayenne–Félix Eboué, switch off airplane mode, and it registers on Outremer. Crossing overland from Suriname or Brazil, it picks up French Guiana towers once you're across.
Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android it's in your network or SIM settings. If you see an EID, you're almost certainly good to go.
It depends on your trip. A one-week space-tourism visit around Cayenne and Kourou runs comfortably on 3 to 5 GB. A two-week itinerary adding the Maroni river, Saül or an Îles du Salut overnight fits 5 to 10 GB, since the offline interior naturally limits usage. Research trips, ESA contractors and longer stays hot-spotting laptops should size for around 20 GB a month. Backpackers crossing overland from Paramaribo to Macapá typically use 3 to 5 GB for the French Guiana leg alone.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share the connection with a laptop or tablet. That's genuinely useful for ESA contractors and longer-stay visitors working from Cayenne or Kourou, which is why we suggest sizing up to around 20 GB a month if you plan to hot-spot regularly. Just remember coverage drives everything here: hotspotting works fine along the coast and in the towns, but there's nothing to share once you're deep in the forest or on a Maroni pirogue trip.
This is a data plan, so it doesn't include a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or your usual messenger, and WhatsApp is how gîtes, Kaw and Maroni tour operators and Maripasoula fixers communicate anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone, keeping your usual number reachable.
Usually, yes. Some French domestic plans include Guyane in bundles like Orange Voyage, so check that first, but other EU carriers typically treat it as international, and UK post-Brexit and US carriers charge roughly $10 to $12 a day. Local Digicel or Orange shops in Cayenne sell prepaid, but registration takes time. For a week or two on the ground, a Blikst plan is the straightforward option: install before you fly and land already connected to Outremer.
