Description

The Faroes don't get many travellers, and the ones who do come often arrive under-prepared for how offline the interior roads feel. The 18-island archipelago is tied together by sub-sea tunnels, helicopter hops, and car ferries — and the weather changes hourly. Having data in the passenger seat of a rental car, on the Mykines puffin hike, or waiting at Sørvágur for the Mykines ferry, is the difference between flexibility and standing around guessing. A Blikst Faroe Islands eSIM runs on Vodafone Føroyar (the Faroe Islands operator in the Vodafone partner network), with 3G and 4G coverage across Tórshavn, Klaksvík, and most of the populated islands.

Where Vodafone Føroyar reaches

Tórshavn and the main road network across Streymoy and Eysturoy have solid 4G. Klaksvík on Borðoy, the northern islands, and the villages connected by the sub-sea tunnels all have 4G in settlements and dips mid-tunnel. The airport area around Vágar (FAE) and the village of Sørvágur have 4G. Mykines (the puffin island) has signal around the village and the harbour; the hike out to the lighthouse on the headland can drop to 3G or nothing past the halfway point. Suðuroy in the far south has coverage in towns — Tvøroyri, Vágur — and thinner signal on the Hvannhagi hiking trail. The sub-sea tunnels from Streymoy to Vágar and from Eysturoy to Borðoy are wired for signal most of the way through, though brief drops happen.

Cost vs. roaming and Kiosk SIMs

The Faroes are part of the Danish kingdom but not in the EU, which means EU roam-like-home doesn't apply. Danish carriers often treat the Faroes as a separate destination on their pricing. UK and US carriers typically charge $10–$15 per day. A local Vodafone Føroyar SIM is available in Tórshavn but requires a shop visit. A Blikst plan activates on arrival, no setup.

Activation on arrival

Install the profile over Wi-Fi before you fly — most travellers connect through Copenhagen or Reykjavík. Land at Vágar (FAE), switch off airplane mode, and the plan registers on Vodafone Føroyar. The sub-sea tunnel drive from Vágar to Tórshavn takes about 45 minutes; you'll have signal most of the way through the Vágatunnilin.

Data habits in the Faroes

  • Atlantic Airways and SSL (Strandfaraskip Landsins) apps: Domestic helicopter schedules and ferry timetables change with weather. Strandfaraskip Landsins runs the inter-island car ferries; schedules are frequent but weather-sensitive.
  • Visit Faroe Islands / Google Maps: Many hiking trails (Kallur lighthouse on Kalsoy, Villingardalsfjall, Sornfelli) cross private land and require permits booked in advance — apps handle the booking.
  • Weather — DMI and Yr: Norwegian Yr.no has surprisingly good Faroe Islands forecasts. DMI is the Danish official source. Both are essential; fog rolls in without warning.
  • Facebook and Messenger: Faroese tour operators and guest houses are more likely to message via Facebook than email or WhatsApp. Cultural quirk worth noting.
  • Offline maps (Gaia, AllTrails with downloads): Hiking trails like Drangarnir or the Traelanipa cliff don't always have live mapping. Pre-download.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A short 3–4 day Tórshavn-and-Vágar trip runs on 1–3 GB. A full week including Mykines, Kalsoy, and Suðuroy fits 3–5 GB — long offline hikes naturally cap use. Ten-day photography-focused trips often use 5 GB, with heavier uploads happening over guesthouse Wi-Fi. Longer stays for work or residency are rare but 10 GB per month is generous for most.

Practical notes

Faroese hotels, Airbnbs, and guesthouses have Wi-Fi almost universally — coverage is one of the country's quiet infrastructure wins. Your eSIM fills the gaps between: on the Kalsoy drive to Trollanes, on the Mykines ferry crossing, waiting out fog at a sheep gate. Install the profile before you fly, download offline trail maps, and land at Vágar already connected to Vodafone Føroyar.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
