Description

Croatia packs a lot of geography into a small country — the Dalmatian coast from Split to Dubrovnik, the islands of Hvar, Brač, Korčula and Vis, Istria's inland wine country, and Zagreb's café culture — and most of the best parts are reached by ferry, where hotel Wi-Fi isn't an option. A Blikst Croatia eSIM runs on the Tele2 network (now operating as Telemach Croatia after the 2021 acquisition, still using the Tele2 radio infrastructure), with 4G across the mainland and islands and 5G in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Zadar, and Osijek. Install before you fly, land at Zagreb (ZAG), Split (SPU), Dubrovnik (DBV), Pula (PUY), or Zadar (ZAD), and skip the carrier booth in arrivals.

Where the Tele2/Telemach network reaches

Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, and Pula all carry 4G and usually 5G in the city cores. The A1 motorway from Zagreb to Split to Ploče and the coastal highway (D8, the Jadranska magistrala) along the Dalmatian coast are well covered. Ferry crossings from Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik to the major islands (Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Vis, Mljet, Lastovo) have signal at both ends and usually through the middle — the Mljet run and the Vis ferry can dip briefly. Plitvice and Krka national parks have 4G at the entrances and near the main viewpoints; deeper trail sections drop to 3G. Istria's hilltop towns (Motovun, Grožnjan, Hum) have 4G at the villages and patchier signal on the back roads through the truffle forests.

Cost vs. EU roaming and UK carriers

EU home carriers' "roam like home" rules cover Croatia, and since its January 2023 euro adoption and Schengen entry, travel across the wider region is friction-light. If you're on an EU plan, check first — you may not need a separate eSIM. UK travellers post-Brexit face £2–£6 per day surcharges on most carriers; US carriers charge $10–$12 per day. A Blikst 15-day 10 GB plan sits well below two days of US roaming.

Arrival at Split, Dubrovnik, or Zagreb

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. Split Airport to the city centre is about 25 km — buses and pre-booked transfers both work well, and the bus needs you to know live timing. Dubrovnik Airport is 20 km from the Old Town, with regular Platanus airport shuttles. Zagreb's Franjo Tuđman is 17 km from the centre. Switch off airplane mode after landing and the Blikst line registers on Tele2/Telemach automatically.

Apps and habits here

  • Jadrolinija: The dominant ferry operator. Timetables and booking are through their website and app; summer capacity fills fast, and real-time platform/pier updates happen in-app on busy days.
  • Bolt and Uber: Both operate in Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik. Bolt tends to be cheaper; Uber has more drivers in some tourist-heavy pockets. Old Town Dubrovnik itself is pedestrian-only — the ride-hailing pickup is outside Pile or Ploče gates.
  • Google Maps: Reliable throughout. Some Istrian farm-road addresses route oddly; drop a pin from the Airbnb host before driving.
  • Payments: Croatia switched to the euro on 1 January 2023 — the kuna is history. Contactless card and Apple/Google Pay are widely accepted, even at market stalls in Split's Pazar or Dubrovnik's Gundulić Square.
  • Parking and tolls: Motorway tolls use an electronic or manual toll system (ENC tag or cash/card at booths); city-centre parking in Split and Dubrovnik uses paid zones with SMS or app payment — data keeps the meters honest.

Plan sizing

A long weekend in Split or Dubrovnik with hotel Wi-Fi works on 1–3 GB. A one-week Dalmatian coast trip (Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik) fits 3–5 GB. Two weeks adding Plitvice, Krka, and an Istrian extension run 5–10 GB. Three-week combined Croatia-and-Slovenia or Croatia-and-Montenegro trips sit at 10–15 GB (note: this plan is Croatia-only — cross-border regional eSIMs exist separately). Families with multiple phones and a hotspot laptop should pick 20 GB or higher.

Install the eSIM before boarding. Land at Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Pula, or Zadar with your Tele2/Telemach line already provisioned, grab the airport shuttle or a Bolt, and be on a Jadrolinija ferry by afternoon. One QR code, a 4G/5G connection, and a working line from arrivals to the last island sunset.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Croatia eSIM runs on the Tele2 network, which now operates as Telemach Croatia following the 2021 acquisition but still uses the same Tele2 radio infrastructure. You get 4G across the mainland and the islands, with 5G in the bigger urban areas — Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Zadar and Osijek. For most travelling, ferry-hopping and navigation, that mix is plenty fast.

Coverage reaches Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Zadar, Sibenik and Pula, all carrying 4G and usually 5G in the city cores. The A1 motorway and the coastal D8 highway are well covered, and ferries from Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik to Hvar, Brac, Korcula, Vis, Mljet and Lastovo have signal at both ends. Honestly, the Mljet and Vis crossings can dip briefly mid-route, Plitvice and Krka drop to 3G on deeper trails, and Istria's back roads through the truffle forests can be patchy.

Right after you buy, you get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes just minutes. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic — the eSIM activates on arrival in Croatia, so once you land at Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Pula or Zadar you simply switch off airplane mode and the Blikst line registers on Tele2/Telemach by itself. No carrier booth needed in arrivals.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support, on iPhone go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android, look in your network or SIM settings. If those are present, you are good to install the QR code.

It depends on your trip. A long weekend in Split or Dubrovnik with hotel Wi-Fi works on 1 to 3 GB. A one-week Dalmatian coast run through Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik fits 3 to 5 GB. Two weeks adding Plitvice, Krka and an Istrian leg run 5 to 10 GB. Families juggling several phones and a hotspot laptop should pick 20 GB or higher. Navigation and ferry apps are the main drains.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported on the Blikst Croatia eSIM, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. That is handy on Jadrolinija ferries or in an Airbnb where the Wi-Fi is unreliable. Just remember any data you tether comes out of the same allowance, so if several devices will lean on one plan, size up — 20 GB or higher is the sensible pick for a family hotspot.

This is a data-only plan, so it does not come with a Croatian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a problem — you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger, which is how most travellers stay in touch anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and its number can stay in the phone, ready for any essential texts.

Usually, yes. UK travellers face £2 to £6 per day surcharges on most carriers post-Brexit, and US carriers charge $10 to $12 per day — a Blikst 15-day 10 GB plan sits well below just two days of US roaming. One caveat worth checking first: if you are on an EU home plan, roam-like-home rules already cover Croatia, so you may not need a separate eSIM at all. For everyone else, the eSIM saves you money and the airport queue.
