Description

Chile is a country 4,300 km long and an average of 180 km wide, which means any trip here involves either long drives down the Ruta 5 / Pan-American or internal flights between wildly different climate zones. A Blikst Chile eSIM runs on Telefonica's Movistar Chile network (3G / 4G) and connects from the moment you land at Santiago (SCL), Calama (CJC) for the Atacama, Punta Arenas (PUQ) for Patagonia, or Puerto Montt (PMC) for the Lakes District — no SIM-counter queue, no registro de porte for your home SIM.

Where Movistar works best

Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, Concepcion, and La Serena all have reliable 4G. The Ruta 5 (Pan-American) from La Serena down to Puerto Montt holds signal almost the entire length. San Pedro de Atacama has good coverage in town; the surrounding Salar, Valle de la Luna, and Tatio geyser drives have 4G near the road and drop offline on the farther trails. Torres del Paine National Park has some signal near Laguna Amarga and the main access road; the W and O treks have long offline stretches — that's expected. Chilean Patagonia's carretera austral south of Coyhaique, Easter Island (Rapa Nui), and the far south around Puerto Williams are lightly covered.

Cost vs. roaming

US carriers typically charge $10–$12 per day for Chile roaming; European carriers treat it as premium. A Blikst plan runs well under that on any trip length. Local Entel, Movistar, or Claro prepaid SIMs are available at SCL but require RUT or passport registration and a shop visit. The eSIM lands on Movistar's network directly.

Getting connected on arrival

Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. SCL airport Wi-Fi works but requires a quick registration. When you land and switch off airplane mode, the Movistar line registers automatically. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. If you're connecting through Lima, Sao Paulo, or Miami, the plan only activates when a Chilean tower picks it up. SCL is about 30 minutes from central Santiago by Turbus / Centropuerto shuttle or Uber — having data live means you can check into your Providencia or Bellas Artes apartment on WhatsApp from the van.

What travellers actually use data for in Chile

  • Uber, Cabify, DiDi: All three work in Santiago, Valparaiso, and Concepcion. Outside those, taxis are by phone or colectivo (shared taxi).
  • WhatsApp: Refugios, cabanas, hostels, and tour operators in the Atacama, Lakes District, and Patagonia confirm everything via WhatsApp. Voice notes are normal.
  • Google Maps and Waze: Waze handles Santiago traffic better than Google Maps. Google Maps handles rural Patagonia's gravel-road network better.
  • Mountain and weather apps: Windy, Meteoblue, and Mountain-Forecast.com are essential for Patagonia treks and Andean climbs. Weather changes fast in Torres del Paine and the southern ice fields.
  • LATAM and Sky: Domestic flight check-ins. Chilean internal flights shift schedules in summer; app notifications matter.
  • Banking: Cards and Apple Pay / Google Pay widely accepted in Santiago. Cash (pesos chilenos) essential in smaller towns and Patagonia roadside stops. Transbank is the main card rail; foreign cards work fine.
  • Rappi and PedidosYa: Delivery apps dominant in Santiago and bigger cities.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Santiago with a Valparaiso day trip on 2–3 GB. A one-week Santiago-plus-Atacama or Santiago-plus-Lakes combo fits into 5 GB. Two weeks covering Santiago, Atacama, and Patagonia sits in 10 GB — the offline stretches in Torres del Paine actually reduce use. Three-week grand tours from Atacama down to Patagonia with Easter Island extension are usually 10–15 GB. Remote workers in Santiago's Providencia or Lastarria for a month should budget 20 GB or higher.

Install before you fly, land at SCL, CJC or PUQ already connected, and get straight from the arrivals hall to your colectivo or rental car. One QR code, the whole country — which is a long country.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Chile eSIM runs on Telefonica's Movistar Chile network, one of the country's main operators. You get 3G and 4G speeds, which is plenty for maps, WhatsApp, ride apps and streaming in the cities. Movistar gives reliable 4G across Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, Concepcion and La Serena, so day-to-day browsing and navigation feel quick wherever you base yourself.

Santiago, Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, Concepcion and La Serena all have reliable 4G, and the Ruta 5 (Pan-American) holds signal almost its whole length from La Serena to Puerto Montt. Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code provided to install it. Do this on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic: the Movistar line registers the moment a Chilean tower picks it up, so it goes live when you land at SCL, CJC or PUQ and switch off airplane mode. Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android the eSIM option appears in your network or SIM settings. If those are present, you should be ready to install.

It depends on your route. A long weekend in Santiago with a Valparaiso day trip fits 2 to 3 GB. A one-week Santiago-plus-Atacama or Santiago-plus-Lakes combo suits 5 GB. Two weeks across Santiago, Atacama and Patagonia sits around 10 GB, since the offline stretches in Torres del Paine actually reduce use. A three-week grand tour with an Easter Island extension is usually 10 to 15 GB, and a month working remotely in Providencia is better on 20 GB or higher.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. That is handy for getting work done from a Providencia apartment, checking weather apps like Windy or Meteoblue before a Patagonia trek, or keeping a second device online during long drives down the Ruta 5. Just remember that coverage follows the Movistar network, so hotspotting only works where there is signal.

This is a data plan, so it does not come with a Chilean phone number, but you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger. In Chile, WhatsApp is how refugios, cabanas, hostels and tour operators confirm everything, and voice notes are normal. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone and keeps your usual number; just turn off data roaming on it.
