The Canary Islands sit off the Moroccan coast but are politically and legally part of Spain and the EU — which has real consequences for anyone with a non-EU mobile plan. A UK carrier bundle, a US roaming pack, or a non-EU eSIM can each bill very differently here, and hotel Wi-Fi at the all-inclusives rarely reaches the volcanic trails or the Lanzarote lava fields where you actually want a map. Lanzarote's Timanfaya (Fire Mountains), Playa Blanca, and Costa Teguise are 4G/5G. Fuerteventura's coast is 4G nearly throughout; the interior dunes at Corralejo are 4G, the dead-zone ranchland drops to 3G briefly. Cost vs. EU roaming and UK carriers

EU home carriers' "roam like home" allowances cover the Canaries — if you're on an EU mainland plan, check first, you likely don't need an eSIM. UK travellers face £2–£6 per day surcharges with most carriers post-Brexit, occasionally higher on the Canaries than on the Spanish mainland. US carriers charge $10–$12 per day. • TITSA and Global bus apps: Tenerife and Gran Canaria have dense, cheap bus networks. The bonobús cards discount fares. Apps show live arrivals and route options — better than guessing at the stop.
• Google Maps: Reliable on coastal roads and in towns. The GR-131 (long-distance hiking trail across the islands) is partially mapped — supplement with Wikiloc or Komoot and download offline tiles before you set out.
• Parking apps: Many resort towns use app-based zone parking (ElParking, various municipal apps). Coins still work, but you'll want data for longer stays.
• Payments: Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted. ATMs are everywhere in resort zones. Some rural inland restaurants still prefer cash.

Plan sizing

A long weekend at an all-inclusive with the hotel Wi-Fi works on 1–3 GB. A one-week active holiday with car rental, Teide, coastal hikes, and a ferry day trip to La Gomera fits 5–10 GB. Two-week island-hopping trips covering Tenerife, La Palma, and La Gomera sit at 10 GB. Digital nomads basing in Las Palmas or Tenerife for a month should pick 20–30 GB — the Canaries have a growing remote-work scene and 5G makes tethering easy to overdo.
