The Blikst Brunei eSIM runs on Datastream, with 3G and 4G coverage across the country. You get solid 4G in the populated areas where you'll spend most of your time, with 3G filling in elsewhere. There's no 5G on this plan, but for navigation, WhatsApp, ride apps and everyday browsing around Bandar Seri Begawan, the 4G service is more than enough.
Coverage spans Brunei-Muara, Tutong, Belait and most of Temburong. Bandar Seri Begawan, Gadong, Kiulap and the route to the airport all sit on solid 4G, and the coastal strip from Muara down through Tutong to Kuala Belait is well covered. The honest gap is Ulu Temburong National Park — once you're past Batang Duri up the river, signal drops to occasional 3G near the ranger station and nothing in the canopy walk area. Treat that as planned offline time.
Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install the profile. Do this over home Wi-Fi before you fly — the free Wi-Fi at Brunei International Airport is too slow to provision an eSIM comfortably. Activation is automatic: when you clear immigration and switch off airplane mode, the Datastream line registers itself. Arriving overland from Miri, it activates at the Sungai Tujoh checkpoint once you pick up a Brunei tower.
Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it's usually in the network or SIM settings. If you see an EID, you're almost certainly good to go.
Most visits are short, so you don't need much. A 2 to 4 day stop covering Bandar Seri Begawan, Kampong Ayer and a Temburong day trip works fine on 1 to 3 GB. A week combining Brunei with cross-border Sabah or Sarawak is safer at 5 GB, though those countries need separate plans as Brunei-only eSIMs don't roam. Business travellers staying two weeks usually land on 10 GB once video calls and hotel Wi-Fi fallback are factored in.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. In the well-covered strip around Bandar Seri Begawan, Gadong and along the coast it works smoothly on 4G. Just remember the Ulu Temburong gap applies to tethering too — once you're up the river past Batang Duri there's little to no signal, so download what you need before the boat leaves.
This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't include a local Brunei phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem — you call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger, and WhatsApp is exactly how Temburong tour operators, water-taxi drivers and homestay hosts communicate. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone, keeping your usual number reachable.
It usually works out better on both convenience and cost. Major US, UK and EU carriers charge roaming around $10 to $15 per day for Brunei, which stacks up fast on a short stop. DST and Unified National Networks sell traveller SIMs at the airport, but a walk-up purchase means producing your passport, filling out a registration form and queueing behind business travellers. A Blikst plan runs the same Datastream infrastructure without the registration desk — well worth it on a 3-day visit.
