Description

Bonaire, Sint Eustatius (Statia) and Saba are the three Dutch Caribbean "BES" islands — technically special municipalities of the Netherlands, separated by hundreds of kilometres of Caribbean Sea. A trip here often spans two or three of them, and standard EU "roam like home" doesn't apply because the BES islands are outside the EU roaming zone despite being part of the Netherlands. A Blikst BES eSIM runs on Digicel's 3G / 4G network and connects from the moment you land at Flamingo International Bonaire (BON), F.D. Roosevelt Statia (EUX), or Juancho E. Yrausquin Saba (SAB) — the last of which has one of the shortest commercial runways in the world.

Multi-island coverage notes

Bonaire has the strongest coverage of the three — Kralendijk, the southern salt flats, Washington-Slagbaai National Park's main access road, and the full windward and leeward dive coastlines all have 4G. Saba is small (13 km²) and coverage from the main villages of Windwardside, St. John's, and The Bottom is solid 4G, with some weaker signal on the Mount Scenery hike and at the deeper dive sites like Tent Reef. Sint Eustatius is similarly compact — Oranjestad and the main roads are covered; Quill National Park and the crater rim have valley-dependent signal. Inter-island Winair flights connect the three and activate on arrival at each airport. All three islands are covered by this single eSIM.

Dive-specific coverage

Bonaire is a shore-diving capital and most dive sites have signal from the beach entry; signal drops as boats move offshore. Saba's boat dives from Fort Bay lose signal a few minutes offshore. Statia's dive sites are shore-accessible for much of the leeward coast with signal at the entry points. Don't rely on cellular for dive emergencies at depth; use the operator's surface-coverage protocols.

Cost vs. roaming

Because the BES islands are outside EU roaming despite being Dutch, Dutch and EU travellers are often surprised by "rest of world" roaming rates of €10–15 per day. US carriers charge similarly. A Blikst plan runs well below that across any trip length. Local Digicel prepaid SIMs are available but require visiting a shop and registration; the eSIM lands on Digicel directly.

Getting connected on arrival

Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly. BON, EUX and SAB airports all have very limited Wi-Fi — install at home. When you land and switch off airplane mode, the Digicel line registers automatically. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM. If you're connecting through Sint Maarten / Princess Juliana (SXM) on a Winair flight to Saba or Statia, SXM is a different jurisdiction — the BES eSIM activates only on a BES tower. Most visitors reach Saba and Statia by Winair from SXM; the short flights are part of the experience.

What travellers actually use data for in the BES

  • WhatsApp: Dive shops on all three islands, boat operators, and small guesthouses confirm via WhatsApp. Voice notes common. Island WhatsApp groups coordinate everything from coral-spawning events to storm prep.
  • Windy, Navionics, PADI apps: Weather and dive-logging are central here. Windy for Caribbean trade winds and hurricane-watch season; Navionics for boat days.
  • Google Maps: Covers all three islands well. Road signage is minimal on Saba — you're often navigating to "the green house past the second switchback."
  • Inter-island travel: Winair has a basic app and website for check-ins; flight schedules between SXM, Saba and Statia shift with weather.
  • Currency: The BES islands use the US dollar (unusually for Dutch territory). Cards work in resorts and larger dive shops; cash for smaller spots.
  • Marine weather and hurricane apps: Hurricane season runs June–November and all three islands take it seriously. NOAA hurricane tracker and local radio apps matter.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-week dedicated dive trip to Bonaire alone works on 3–5 GB if on hotel Wi-Fi at night. A week split between Saba and Statia sits in 3 GB (small islands, lots of offline trail time). Two weeks rotating all three islands fits into 5–10 GB. Serious dive-centric stays of three weeks or longer — common for tech divers on Bonaire — should budget 10 GB or more. Remote-work stays of a month with regular video calls back home push to 20 GB.

Install before you fly, land at BON, SAB, or EUX already connected, and coordinate your first dive briefing on WhatsApp from the dock. One QR code, Digicel network, all three BES islands.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst BES eSIM runs on Digicel's network across all three Dutch Caribbean islands. You get 3G and 4G speeds, which is plenty for messaging, maps, weather and dive apps, and the occasional video call home. One QR code puts you on Digicel directly, so there is no need to hunt down a local shop or register a prepaid SIM in person when you arrive.

All three islands are covered. Bonaire is strongest, with 4G across Kralendijk, the southern salt flats, the main road into Washington-Slagbaai National Park, and the full dive coastlines. Saba has solid 4G in Windwardside, St. John's and The Bottom, but expect weaker signal on the Mount Scenery hike and deeper dive sites like Tent Reef. On Statia, Oranjestad and main roads are covered, while the Quill crater rim is valley-dependent.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install it. Do this at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, because the BON, EUX and SAB airports all have very limited Wi-Fi. The eSIM activates automatically the moment you land on a BES island and switch off airplane mode, registering on Digicel with no further setup needed.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for the EID number; on Android you will find it in the network settings. If both are present, you are good to go.

It depends on your trip. A one-week dedicated dive trip to Bonaire works on 3 to 5 GB if you use hotel Wi-Fi at night. A week split between Saba and Statia sits around 3 GB, thanks to small islands and plenty of offline trail time. Two weeks rotating all three fits 5 to 10 GB. Three-week dive-centric stays should budget 10 GB or more, and a month of remote work with regular video calls pushes towards 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion's phone. It is handy for logging dives, checking Windy or Navionics for boat days, or joining a video call from your guesthouse. Just remember that signal is built around the islands' towns and coastlines, so coverage on the Mount Scenery hike, the Quill crater rim, or well offshore can drop regardless of how you connect.

This is a data plan, so it does not include a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is no problem here, since dive shops, boat operators and guesthouses across all three islands coordinate over WhatsApp, including voice notes. You can call and message freely using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime over the data. Your physical home SIM stays in the phone as a separate line, so your usual number remains reachable.

Usually, yes. Because the BES islands sit outside the EU roaming zone despite being Dutch, EU travellers are often caught out by rest-of-world roaming rates of around 10 to 15 euros per day, and US carriers charge similarly. A Blikst plan runs well below that across any trip length. Local Digicel prepaid SIMs exist but mean visiting a shop and registering, whereas the eSIM lands on Digicel directly.
