Description

Belgium is compact enough that Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Liege all sit within 90 minutes of each other by rail — which means a week here often involves three or four cities, a dozen train rides, and more SNCB platform lookups than anywhere else in Europe. A Blikst Belgium eSIM runs on ORANGE with 4G / 5G coverage across all the major cities, the Eurostar and Thalys corridors, and into the Ardennes. It means you land at Brussels Airport or Midi and move straight into your itinerary without stopping at a Lyca or Proximus kiosk.

Where Orange Belgium's network shines

5G covers central Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Leuven, and Liege. 4G fills everywhere else — the coastal strip from De Panne to Knokke, the Ardennes around Dinant, Bastogne and La Roche-en-Ardenne, and the rail corridors. The tunnel under central Brussels (Schuman–Gare Centrale) has had fitful mobile repeater coverage historically; expect brief drops. The border crossings to Luxembourg, France, and the Netherlands are covered but your eSIM does not roam into those countries — this is a Belgium-only plan.

What it saves vs. roaming

EU travellers with roam-like-home probably don't need this — check your existing plan first. Non-EU visitors (UK post-Brexit, US, Canadian, Australian) typically see $10–$12 per day roaming on Belgium. A Blikst plan on Orange's 5G network runs a fraction of that over a week and doesn't require a Proximus shop visit at Midi.

Arriving at BRU, CRL, or by train

Install the eSIM over home Wi-Fi before you fly. When you land at Brussels Airport (BRU), flip off airplane mode once you hit baggage claim and the Orange line registers automatically. Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) works the same way. If you arrive by Eurostar from London, the eSIM activates at Midi/Zuid as soon as the train clears the Channel Tunnel and picks up a Belgian tower. Thalys from Paris Nord or ICE from Cologne behave identically.

What you'll actually use data for here

  • SNCB: Belgium's national rail app for tickets, platform numbers, and real-time delay info. The printed departure boards at Brussels-Midi don't always catch last-minute platform swaps — the app does.
  • STIB, De Lijn, TEC: Brussels, Flanders, and Wallonia each have separate transit apps. Google Maps folds them in but the native apps handle payments and season tickets more cleanly.
  • Uber, Bolt, Heetch: Uber works in Brussels and Antwerp. Bolt is active in several cities. Taxis from Midi are regulated; rideshare from the airport has specific pickup zones.
  • Payconiq: The Belgian QR-payment app is widely used at markets and small shops. Apple Pay and Google Pay are standard everywhere else.
  • Google Maps / Waze: The Brussels ring road and the Antwerp ring are infamous for traffic. Waze re-routes on a minute-by-minute basis.

Languages and the signage tricks

Brussels is officially bilingual (French/Dutch). Flanders uses Dutch signage only, Wallonia uses French only, and Ostend's beach bars will use English before they use either. Google Maps routes show road signs in whichever region you're in — knowing "Bergen" is "Mons" and "Rijsel" is "Lille" saves confusion on Flemish highway gantries. Offline Dutch and French translation packs cover menus.

Plan sizing for Belgium trips

A 3-day Brussels weekend: 1–3 GB. A week covering Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp by rail: 5 GB. Two-week itineraries including the Ardennes and coastal towns: 10 GB. Business travellers on EU-institution rounds in Brussels for a month: 20 GB once video calls and hotel-Wi-Fi fallback get factored in. Festival stays (Tomorrowland, Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop) chew through data faster because of crowded masts — bump up a tier.

Install before you fly, land on 5G, and walk onto the Brussels Airport Express with your SNCB app already loaded. The first waffle counter is more interesting than a SIM shop queue.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Belgium eSIM runs on Orange (network provider: ORANGE), one of Belgium's main mobile operators. You get 4G and 5G speeds, with 5G covering central Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Leuven and Liege, and solid 4G everywhere else. Coverage stretches across all the major cities, the Eurostar and Thalys corridors, and into the Ardennes, so you stay connected as you move between cities by rail.

Orange's 5G covers central Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Leuven and Liege. 4G fills in everywhere else, including the coastal strip from De Panne to Knokke, the Ardennes around Dinant, Bastogne and La Roche-en-Ardenne, and the rail corridors. One honest weak spot: the tunnel under central Brussels between Schuman and Gare Centrale has had patchy mobile repeater coverage, so expect brief drops there. Border areas are covered, but the plan stays Belgium-only and won't roam into neighbouring countries.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes just minutes. Install it over home Wi-Fi before you fly by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: the eSIM switches on when you arrive in Belgium. Land at Brussels Airport or Charleroi, turn off airplane mode at baggage claim, and the Orange line registers itself. Arriving by Eurostar, Thalys or ICE, it activates once the train picks up a Belgian tower.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for the EID number; on Android you'll find eSIM options in the network or SIM settings. If in doubt, confirm before you travel.

It depends on your trip. A three-day Brussels weekend is comfortable on 1 to 3 GB. A week covering Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp by rail suits about 5 GB. Two-week itineraries that include the Ardennes and coastal towns are better on 10 GB. Business travellers on EU-institution rounds for a month should plan for 20 GB once video calls factor in. Festival stays like Tomorrowland or Rock Werchter chew through data faster on crowded masts, so bump up a tier.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. That's handy on the train between Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, or back at the hotel. Just remember it draws from the same data allowance, so heavier hotspot use such as video calls or large downloads will get through your plan faster than browsing on a single device.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a Belgian phone number for traditional calls or texts. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger wherever you have a connection. Because an eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone, so friends and family can still reach you on your usual number.

It depends where you're travelling from. EU travellers with roam-like-home probably don't need this, so check your existing plan first. Non-EU visitors from the UK, US, Canada or Australia typically see around 10 to 12 dollars per day roaming in Belgium. A Blikst plan on Orange's 5G network runs a fraction of that over a week, and it skips the queue at a Proximus or Lyca shop at Midi, so you walk straight into your itinerary.
