Description

Serbia has become one of the Balkans' best-value travel destinations — Belgrade nightlife, Novi Sad's EXIT festival summer, and the southern loops through Niš, Zlatibor, and Tara National Park pull a growing crowd of European and long-haul visitors. A Blikst Serbia eSIM runs on Yettel (formerly Telenor Serbia, rebranded in 2022 but still listed as Telenor in many carrier databases, including ours) at 3G / 4G speeds. Yettel's urban 4G is solid, and the upgrade to 5G in Belgrade and Novi Sad is rolling out through the network.

Coverage across Serbia

Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, Kragujevac, and Subotica all have strong 4G. The E75 motorway from the Hungarian border at Horgoš through Belgrade and down to Niš holds 4G the whole way. The Ibar valley highway south from Kraljevo toward Raška and Novi Pazar has good 4G along the main road and 3G in the side valleys. Tara National Park and the Drina canyon around Perućac have 4G at the main viewpoints and lodges; the deep ravines drop to 3G. Kopaonik ski resort has strong 4G at the base and patchier coverage on the higher slopes. The Đerdap gorge (Iron Gates) along the Danube from Golubac to Kladovo has 4G in the towns and 3G between them.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a local Yettel / MTS / A1 SIM

Serbia is not in the EU, so Roam Like at Home does not apply — even travellers from EU member states will hit roaming surcharges or daily fees on most plans. Western European carriers typically charge $8–$12 per day for Serbia. Local SIMs from Yettel, MTS, or A1 are easy to buy at Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) or city-centre shops, but require passport registration. The Blikst eSIM attaches on arrival without paperwork.

Arrival at Belgrade Nikola Tesla (BEG) or overland

Install the profile on home Wi-Fi before you fly. The Yettel line registers as you clear passport control at Belgrade. Arrivals by train from Budapest via Kelebija, by bus from Sofia via Dimitrovgrad, or by car from Sarajevo via Karakaj hand off to Serbian networks at the border. If you're flying into Niš Constantine the Great (INI), it's a smaller airport but the eSIM activation works identically.

Local apps and data habits

  • CarGo and Yandex Go: Serbia's ride-hailing options. CarGo is the local favourite and dominant in Belgrade; Yandex operates with patchier driver coverage. Uber does not operate here.
  • Glovo and Wolt: Food delivery in Belgrade and Novi Sad. Both are heavy users of location data.
  • BeogradPlus: Belgrade's city services app, including the GSP public-transport ticketing. Single tickets can be bought on-bus by tapping a contactless card, which makes day-to-day movement data-light.
  • Google Maps: Accurate in cities and on major roads. For Tara, the Đerdap gorge, and the Pešter plateau in the south, download offline tiles.
  • Currency: Serbia uses the dinar (RSD). Most cards work, and contactless is widespread in Belgrade. Rural areas still lean cash.

Plan sizing by trip length

A Belgrade weekend — Kalemegdan, Skadarlija, a Zemun dinner — works on 1–3 GB. A one-week Serbia loop covering Belgrade, Novi Sad, Fruška Gora, and a southern night in Niš or Zlatibor wants 5 GB. Two weeks of a deeper tour including Tara, the Đerdap gorge, and the Kopaonik or Stara Planina mountains fit 10 GB. Digital nomads basing in Belgrade for a month — and there are a lot of them right now — should go 20 GB, since apartment Wi-Fi in older Vračar and Dorćol buildings can be inconsistent.

Good to know

Serbia welcomes most nationalities without a visa, ATM access is easy, and English is widely spoken by under-40s, especially in the cities. The Belgrade metro is still under construction as of 2026 — all urban transit here is buses, trams, and trolleybuses, and a data-connected phone makes the BeogradPlus and Moovit routing actually work.

Install at home, land at BEG or cross the border overland, and the Yettel (Telenor) line picks up before you clear arrivals.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Serbia eSIM runs on Yettel, the operator formerly known as Telenor Serbia. It rebranded to Yettel in 2022, but it is still listed as Telenor in many carrier databases, including ours, so don't be surprised to see that name. You get 3G and 4G speeds. Yettel's urban 4G is solid, and a 5G upgrade is currently rolling out across Belgrade and Novi Sad.

Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niś, Kragujevac and Subotica all have strong 4G, and the E75 motorway from the Horgoš border through Belgrade down to Niš holds 4G the whole way. Being honest about the weaker spots: the Ibar valley side valleys, the deep ravines around Tara and the Drina canyon, the higher Kopaonik ski slopes, and the stretches between towns in the Đerdap gorge all drop to 3G.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code provided to install the profile. Do this on home Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic: the Yettel line registers as you clear passport control at Belgrade, or hands off to Serbian networks at the border if you arrive overland by train, bus or car. You'll be connected before you reach arrivals.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support on an iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android the option sits in your network or SIM settings. If in doubt, our compatibility list is the quickest way to be sure.

It depends on your trip. A Belgrade weekend taking in Kalemegdan, Skadarlija and a Zemun dinner works on 1 to 3 GB. A one-week loop through Belgrade, Novi Sad, Fruška Gora and a southern night in Niš or Zlatibor wants around 5 GB. Two weeks including Tara, the Đerdap gorge and the Kopaonik or Stara Planina mountains fit 10 GB. Digital nomads basing in Belgrade for a month should go 20 GB, since older apartment Wi-Fi can be inconsistent.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. This is handy if your Belgrade apartment Wi-Fi is patchy, which is common in older Vračar and Dorćol buildings. Just keep an eye on your allowance, as hotspotting tends to burn through data faster than browsing on the phone itself, especially with video calls or large downloads.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't include a local Serbian phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Viber. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone the whole time, so you'll still receive your usual texts and calls when you want them.

Usually, yes. Serbia is not in the EU, so Roam Like at Home does not apply, and even EU travellers hit roaming surcharges. Western European carriers typically charge 8 to 12 dollars per day here. Local Yettel, MTS or A1 SIMs are easy to buy at Nikola Tesla Airport or city shops, but they require passport registration. The Blikst eSIM attaches on arrival with no paperwork, which makes it both simpler and easier on the budget.
