Description

Paraguay doesn't get the tourist traffic of its neighbours, so the usual eSIM options are thin. A Blikst Paraguay eSIM runs on Telefónica's Tigo/Movistar infrastructure — the largest carrier footprint in the country — with 3G/4G across Asunción, Ciudad del Este, Encarnación and most of the paved Ruta 1 and Ruta 2 corridors. Coverage off those corridors (deep Chaco, remote Alto Paraná, the Jesuit Ruins backroads) drops to 3G or edges out entirely, which is useful to know before you pick a plan.

Where Telefónica works well

Asunción, the greater metro area including San Lorenzo and Lambaré, and the highway south to Encarnación have dependable 4G. Ciudad del Este on the Brazilian border — a shopping hub for Brazilian and Argentine visitors — has strong 4G. The Itaipú dam area is covered. North into the Chaco beyond Filadelfia and the Mennonite colonies, signal drops fast: expect long offline stretches if you're driving the Trans-Chaco highway. The Jesuit mission ruins around Trinidad have 3G/4G near the main villages.

Cost vs. buying a local Tigo or Personal SIM

You can pick up a local SIM at Silvio Pettirossi airport or in Asunción shops for a few dollars, but you'll need your passport and the registration process is slower than regional norms. US carriers charge $10–$12 per day for South America roaming, so even a week-long visit quickly outruns the cost of a Blikst plan. If you're on the Iguazú-Asunción-Ciudad del Este route, the eSIM is installed before you leave home and works across the whole trip.

Arrival at Silvio Pettirossi (ASU)

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. Land at Silvio Pettirossi International (ASU) or Guaraní International (AGT) in Ciudad del Este, toggle airplane mode off, and the line activates on first data use. Airport Wi-Fi is free at ASU but the terminal is small and connection quality varies. Buses and taxis into Asunción (about 20 minutes) work on 4G the whole way.

Apps you'll use

  • WhatsApp — how everyone in Paraguay communicates. Hotels, guides, tour operators and restaurants default to WhatsApp over phone calls.
  • MUV and Bolt — ride-hailing in Asunción. Uber is limited; MUV is the homegrown option, Bolt has decent coverage.
  • Google Maps — works well in urban areas; download offline maps for Chaco driving.
  • Tigo Money and Personal Pay — mobile money is widely used for small purchases at markets and ferias.
  • Google Translate — Spanish is universal but Guaraní phrases appear on menus and signs; the camera mode handles both.

Border-crossing notes

If your trip includes Iguazú Falls, the Brazilian side (Foz do Iguaçu) and the Argentine side (Puerto Iguazú) are not covered on this plan — those are separate Brazil and Argentina eSIMs. The Paraguayan side of the Triple Frontier (Ciudad del Este) is covered. Crossing Friendship Bridge to Brazil means your Paraguay line stops; pick up a Brazil eSIM or regional plan if you're spending time on that side.

Plan sizing

A 3-day Asunción stopover — 1–2 GB. A one-week Asunción + Encarnación + Jesuit ruins loop — 3–5 GB. A two-week trip adding Chaco and the Itaipú region — 10 GB (you'll use more due to heavier map reliance in rural areas). Long-term business visitors in Asunción for a month — 20 GB or higher.

Install at home, land at Pettirossi, and go straight to the first tereré break without detouring through a phone shop.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Paraguay eSIM runs on Telefónica's Tigo/Movistar infrastructure, which gives you the largest carrier footprint in the country. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with dependable 4G across Asunción, the greater metro area and the highway south to Encarnación. It's a solid backbone for a country where the usual eSIM options are thin on the ground.

You'll have 3G/4G across Asunción, Ciudad del Este, Encarnación and most of the paved Ruta 1 and Ruta 2 corridors. Asunción with San Lorenzo and Lambaré, plus the Itaipú dam area and the Jesuit ruins near Trinidad, are all covered. Be honest with yourself about the gaps, though: north into the Chaco beyond Filadelfia, signal drops fast, so expect long offline stretches driving the Trans-Chaco highway.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code to install the profile. Do that at home over Wi-Fi before you fly. Activation is automatic on arrival in Paraguay: land at Silvio Pettirossi (ASU) or Guaraní (AGT) in Ciudad del Este, switch airplane mode off, and the line activates on your first data use. No phone-shop detour needed.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android it's in the network settings. If both are present, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A three-day Asunción stopover is comfortable on 1 to 2 GB. A one-week loop taking in Asunción, Encarnación and the Jesuit ruins suits about 3 to 5 GB. A two-week trip adding the Chaco and the Itaipú region is better on 10 GB, since you'll lean on offline maps more in rural areas. Business visitors staying a month in Asunción should plan for 20 GB or higher.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or tablet, or a travelling companion's phone. Bear in mind that hotspot use eats through data faster, and coverage off the main corridors can drop to 3G or out entirely, so it works best in Asunción, Ciudad del Este and along the paved routes rather than out in the deep Chaco.

This is a data plan, so you call and message over the internet rather than through a traditional number. That suits Paraguay perfectly, where WhatsApp is how everyone communicates, with hotels, guides and restaurants defaulting to it over phone calls. Apps like FaceTime work the same way. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone for anything you genuinely need them for.

Usually, yes. US carriers charge around $10 to $12 a day for South America roaming, so even a week-long visit quickly outruns the cost of a Blikst plan. You can buy a local Tigo or Personal SIM at Silvio Pettirossi airport for a few dollars, but you'll need your passport and the registration is slower than regional norms. The eSIM installs before you leave home and just works on arrival.
