Description

Nauru is one of the smallest and least-visited countries in the world — a single island of 21 square kilometres with a population around 12,000, and a traveller count that might break three digits in a good year. A Blikst Nauru eSIM runs on Digicel Nauru's 3G/4G network, which is the main mobile operator on the island. Coverage is effectively the whole island — there's nowhere on Nauru that's more than a couple of kilometres from a signal — but speeds and service quality vary with the island's small infrastructure.

What coverage looks like on Nauru

The ring road around the island (Island Ring Road) is 19 km long and passes every district. Digicel has towers covering Yaren (the de facto capital), Aiwo, the Menen Hotel area, Anibare Bay on the east coast, and the central plateau around Topside and Buada Lagoon. 4G is the norm; 3G fallback happens occasionally. Indoor signal can be weaker in reinforced buildings. The phosphate mining pinnacles in the interior have signal but patchy.

Cost vs. local Digicel SIM

You can buy a Digicel SIM at the Digicel office in Aiwo or the airport counter — prices are low and registration is straightforward, but opening hours are limited and the counter at Nauru International isn't always staffed when you land. A Blikst eSIM installs before you fly and works the moment you arrive. For short visits — business trips, transit on the Brisbane/Nadi Nauru Airlines rotation, or the occasional tourist — the eSIM is the smoother option.

Arrival at Nauru International (INU)

Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi — airport Wi-Fi on Nauru is minimal. Land at Nauru International (INU), which is in Yaren on the southwest coast, switch airplane mode off, and Digicel registers. The airport is a 5-minute drive from the Menen Hotel. There are no ride-hail apps on Nauru; taxis are informal and hotel pickups are the norm. Nauru Airlines runs limited rotations from Brisbane and Nadi, so your schedule is probably fixed.

Apps and data habits

  • Facebook and Messenger — Nauru, like much of the Pacific, runs heavily on Facebook. Local contacts, government officials, and businesses often prefer Messenger over email.
  • WhatsApp — used but less dominant than Messenger.
  • Google Maps — download offline before you arrive. The small road network and mining pinnacles are under-mapped.
  • Nauru Airlines app — check-in and schedule updates for the limited rotation to Brisbane or Nadi.

Practical notes

Nauru eSIMs are data-only. There's no metro, no Uber, no rail, and one hotel most travellers use (the Menen Hotel in Yaren). Currency is the Australian dollar. ATMs are very limited — bring cash. Power outages occur occasionally; hotel Wi-Fi drops with them. The eSIM is useful for Messenger contact, WhatsApp home calls, and maps around the ring road.

Diving and coast notes

Anibare Bay on the east coast is the main swimming beach and has Digicel signal throughout. Buada Lagoon in the centre has signal. The western coast by Aiwo, where the phosphate cantilever loading station operates, has signal along the waterfront. There are no serious diving operations year-round — Nauru's tourism infrastructure is minimal.

Plan sizing

A 2-day Nauru business stopover or transit — 500 MB to 1 GB is enough. A week-long visit (which is a long stay for Nauru) — 2–3 GB. Consultants, diplomats, or aid workers staying two weeks or more — 5 GB.

Install before you fly, land at Nauru International, and keep a working Messenger and maps line for the ring road. It's a small island and an even smaller trip — the eSIM just removes one friction point.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
