Description

Mozambique's long Indian Ocean coastline — Tofo, Vilanculos, the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos — draws divers, kitesurfers, and beach travellers, often routing overland from South Africa via the Komatipoort/Ressano Garcia border. A Blikst Mozambique eSIM runs on Vodacom Moçambique's 3G/4G network, the country's largest carrier, with coverage across Maputo, Beira, Nampula, and the main coastal towns. Rural Niassa Province, parts of Cabo Delgado, and offshore islands drop to 3G or edge out entirely.

Where Vodacom works well

Maputo (Baixa, Polana, Costa do Sol), Matola, the EN4 corridor from Ressano Garcia to Maputo, and the EN1 north toward Inhambane and Tofo have solid 4G. Tofo and Tofinho have 4G at the main dive shops and lodges. Vilanculos has 4G at the town centre and airport. Beira and Nampula are covered. The Bazaruto Archipelago (Benguerra, Bazaruto Island) has 4G at the main lodges via satellite backhaul; island interiors can be patchy. The Quirimbas (Ibo, Quilálea, Medjumbe) have thinner service and rely heavily on lodge Wi-Fi. The N1 north past Inchope has long rural gaps. Cabo Delgado has ongoing security considerations affecting travel; check current advisories.

Cost vs. buying a local Vodacom or Movitel SIM

Vodacom, Tmcel, and Movitel sell tourist SIMs in Maputo for low cost, but SIM registration at the kiosk requires passport details and takes a while. Overland arrivals at Lebombo/Ressano Garcia often stop at a SIM shop in Maputo after crossing. The Blikst eSIM installs before you fly or drive in and works at the border. US and European carriers roaming in Mozambique typically charge $10–$15 per day.

Arrival at Maputo or Vilanculos

Install the profile at home on Wi-Fi. Land at Maputo International (MPM), Vilanculos (VNX), Inhambane (INH), Beira (BEW), or Pemba (POL), switch airplane mode off, and Vodacom registers. If you're driving in from South Africa via Komatipoort, the line registers once you're past Ressano Garcia and within Mozambique's tower range — usually 10–20 minutes after crossing. Maputo airport is 3 km from the city centre; Tofo is a 7-8 hour drive from Maputo on the EN1.

Apps you'll actually use

  • WhatsApp — lodges, dive shops, and tour operators communicate almost exclusively through WhatsApp. The primary channel.
  • M-Pesa (Mozambique) — mobile money is widely used; as a short-term visitor you'll rely on cash (meticais) and cards at lodges.
  • Google Maps — download offline maps for the coastal route and your dive/beach areas. Rural map data can lag.
  • Yango and Txopela — Yango (a Yandex ride-hail spinoff) operates in Maputo; Txopela is a local ride-hail alternative. Uber has limited Mozambique presence.
  • Google Translate — Portuguese is the official language; camera mode helps with menus at smaller restaurants outside the tourist coast.

Diving, beach, and overland notes

Tofo's whale shark and manta ray season runs October–March; the dive shops in Tofo town have Wi-Fi and Vodacom signal. Bazaruto's lodges are high-end and universally Wi-Fi-equipped; your eSIM is the between-transfer layer. Driving the EN1 north requires fuel planning — stations are spaced and the road condition varies. Border crossing paperwork at Ressano Garcia includes vehicle import permits if you're bringing a car from South Africa.

Practical notes

Mozambique eSIMs are data-only. Currency is the Mozambican metical; ATMs in Maputo, Vilanculos and Inhambane are generally reliable. Power outages occur; lodge generators handle them for Wi-Fi, but the mobile network is more resilient to local outages than Wi-Fi is. Rainy season (November–April) can disrupt rural road access.

Plan sizing

A 4-day Tofo or Vilanculos beach trip — 2–3 GB. A one-week overland from Maputo to Tofo and back — 5 GB. Two-week coastal tour including Bazaruto — 10 GB. Long-term diving instructors or volunteers — 20 GB.

Install before you fly or cross the border, land on Vodacom, and keep the WhatsApp line with your lodge active the whole way.

eSIM FAQ

It runs on Vodacom Mocambique, the country's largest carrier, on its 3G/4G network. You'll get 4G in the main cities and along the busy coastal routes, with the network dropping back to 3G or edge in more remote spots. Vodacom is also more resilient than lodge Wi-Fi when local power outages hit, which makes it a dependable line along the coast.

Coverage is solid across Maputo, Matola, Beira and Nampula, plus the EN4 corridor from Ressano Garcia and the EN1 north toward Inhambane and Tofo. Tofo, Tofinho and Vilanculos have 4G at the main lodges and dive shops. Bazaruto's lodges get 4G via satellite backhaul. Be honest with yourself about the gaps: rural Niassa, the N1 past Inchope, the Quirimbas islands and parts of Cabo Delgado are patchy, 3G, or lean on lodge Wi-Fi.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install the profile, ideally at home on Wi-Fi before you travel. Activation is automatic: land at Maputo, Vilanculos, Inhambane, Beira or Pemba, switch airplane mode off, and Vodacom registers. If you're driving in from South Africa via Komatipoort, the line registers usually 10 to 20 minutes after you pass Ressano Garcia.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android it's in the network or SIM settings. If both show up, you're good to go.

It depends on your trip. A 4-day Tofo or Vilanculos beach break is comfortable on 2 to 3 GB. A one-week overland loop from Maputo to Tofo and back suits about 5 GB. A two-week coastal tour including Bazaruto is better on 10 GB. Long-term diving instructors and volunteers tend to want 20 GB. Offline Google Maps for the coastal route will save a fair bit of data.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. It's handy along the EN1 and at lodges where Wi-Fi is unreliable. Just remember coverage follows Vodacom's footprint, so a hotspot will only be as strong as the signal where you're standing, and it draws from the same data allowance as your phone.

Mozambique eSIMs are data-only, so there's no traditional voice or SMS plan. In practice that's fine here, because lodges, dive shops and tour operators communicate almost exclusively through WhatsApp, which works over data along with FaceTime and similar apps. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone to keep your usual number reachable for messages.

Usually, yes. US and European carriers roaming in Mozambique typically charge around 10 to 15 dollars a day, which adds up fast. A local Vodacom, Tmcel or Movitel tourist SIM is low cost but means a kiosk stop in Maputo, handing over passport details and waiting for registration. The Blikst eSIM installs before you fly or cross the border and works the moment you're within tower range past Ressano Garcia.
