It runs on Vodacom Mocambique, the country's largest carrier, on its 3G/4G network. You'll get 4G in the main cities and along the busy coastal routes, with the network dropping back to 3G or edge in more remote spots. Vodacom is also more resilient than lodge Wi-Fi when local power outages hit, which makes it a dependable line along the coast.
Coverage is solid across Maputo, Matola, Beira and Nampula, plus the EN4 corridor from Ressano Garcia and the EN1 north toward Inhambane and Tofo. Tofo, Tofinho and Vilanculos have 4G at the main lodges and dive shops. Bazaruto's lodges get 4G via satellite backhaul. Be honest with yourself about the gaps: rural Niassa, the N1 past Inchope, the Quirimbas islands and parts of Cabo Delgado are patchy, 3G, or lean on lodge Wi-Fi.
Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install the profile, ideally at home on Wi-Fi before you travel. Activation is automatic: land at Maputo, Vilanculos, Inhambane, Beira or Pemba, switch airplane mode off, and Vodacom registers. If you're driving in from South Africa via Komatipoort, the line registers usually 10 to 20 minutes after you pass Ressano Garcia.
Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android it's in the network or SIM settings. If both show up, you're good to go.
It depends on your trip. A 4-day Tofo or Vilanculos beach break is comfortable on 2 to 3 GB. A one-week overland loop from Maputo to Tofo and back suits about 5 GB. A two-week coastal tour including Bazaruto is better on 10 GB. Long-term diving instructors and volunteers tend to want 20 GB. Offline Google Maps for the coastal route will save a fair bit of data.
Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. It's handy along the EN1 and at lodges where Wi-Fi is unreliable. Just remember coverage follows Vodacom's footprint, so a hotspot will only be as strong as the signal where you're standing, and it draws from the same data allowance as your phone.
Mozambique eSIMs are data-only, so there's no traditional voice or SMS plan. In practice that's fine here, because lodges, dive shops and tour operators communicate almost exclusively through WhatsApp, which works over data along with FaceTime and similar apps. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, you can leave your physical home SIM in the phone to keep your usual number reachable for messages.
Usually, yes. US and European carriers roaming in Mozambique typically charge around 10 to 15 dollars a day, which adds up fast. A local Vodacom, Tmcel or Movitel tourist SIM is low cost but means a kiosk stop in Maputo, handing over passport details and waiting for registration. The Blikst eSIM installs before you fly or cross the border and works the moment you're within tower range past Ressano Garcia.
