Description

Montserrat is one of the quieter corners of the Caribbean — a small volcanic island where the southern exclusion zone around Soufrière Hills is still off-limits, and most of the life sits in the north around Little Bay, Brades and Salem. That smallness means almost everyone communicates by phone or WhatsApp, and rental-car directions depend on real navigation rather than guesswork on unsigned roads. A Blikst Montserrat eSIM runs on Digicel, with 3G / 4G coverage across the populated north of the island.

Where Digicel's signal works

The northern settlements — Little Bay, Brades, Cudjoe Head, Salem, Olveston and Woodlands — all get usable 4G. Signal stretches down the west coast as far as the boundary of the volcanic exclusion zone and along the main road out to Look Out. Hiking trails through the Centre Hills and up around Jack Boy Hill have patchier coverage; the far northern beaches (Rendezvous Bay, Little Bay cliffs) can drop to 3G depending on where you're standing. The exclusion zone in the south is both restricted and effectively offline — don't plan around signal down there.

Cost vs. roaming

US carriers usually charge $10 per day or more for roaming in Montserrat, and many non-North American carriers either don't cover the island at all or charge per-megabyte rates that pile up fast. A Blikst eSIM for a week comes in well below what even two days of typical roaming costs. Local Digicel or FLOW SIMs are available but require a stop at the office during business hours — not ideal when most visitors arrive by ferry from Antigua or on a small connector flight and want to start exploring immediately.

Arriving on the island

Install the eSIM before you leave home — the QR scan needs Wi-Fi. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Antigua (Heritage Express from St John's) or by small aircraft into John A. Osborne Airport (MNI) in the north. When you turn airplane mode off on arrival, the Blikst line registers on Digicel automatically. If you layover in Antigua (ANU), the Montserrat plan won't activate until a Montserrat tower picks it up — handy, because Antigua runs its own carriers.

What travellers actually use data for

  • WhatsApp: Tour guides for the volcano observatory tours, taxi drivers, dive operators and villa hosts will all reach you here. It's the island's default channel.
  • Google Maps: Most roads aren't signposted in tourist-friendly ways; live navigation keeps you out of the exclusion zone boundary and on the right switchbacks.
  • Volcano observatory updates: The Montserrat Volcano Observatory publishes current hazard levels and exclusion zone status online. Worth checking before you set off hiking near the boundary.
  • Ferry and flight schedules: Weather disrupts both more often than you'd think. Keeping an eye on the Heritage Express and FlyMontserrat schedules via their websites saves a wasted trip to the port.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A weekend day-trip from Antigua with a guided tour and a meal needs very little — 1–2 GB is plenty. A week on the island, staying at a villa in Olveston or Woodlands with some Netflix in the evenings and daily WhatsApp coordination, fits into 3–5 GB. Longer stays of two weeks or more, especially if you're working remotely from a villa with slow Wi-Fi, should go for 10 GB or higher. Don't oversize — Montserrat is not a country where you'll burn through 50 GB unless you're streaming constantly.

Good to know

Power reliability is generally good in the north, but the island runs on one main grid, and weather events (tropical systems, heavy storms) can interrupt service. Keep your phone charged and a cached offline map of the north before you head out on hikes. The southern exclusion zone is patrolled — stay north of the boundary line regardless of what your signal looks like.

Install at home, land (or dock) in the north with a working Digicel line already live, and skip the carrier office entirely. One QR code, and you're reachable from the first cup of Montserratian coffee to the last sunset over the Caribbean.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Montserrat eSIM runs on Digicel, one of the main mobile operators serving the island. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with usable 4G across the populated north. It's the same network most locals rely on, so when you turn airplane mode off on arrival, your line registers on Digicel automatically and you're connected for calls, WhatsApp and navigation straight away.

Coverage follows where people actually live, in the north of the island. The settlements of Little Bay, Brades, Cudjoe Head, Salem, Olveston and Woodlands all get usable 4G, and signal stretches down the west coast to the edge of the volcanic exclusion zone and out along the main road to Look Out. Be honest with yourself about the gaps: hiking trails through the Centre Hills and around Jack Boy Hill are patchier, the far northern beaches can drop to 3G, and the southern exclusion zone is effectively offline.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you simply scan the QR code provided to install it. Do this before you leave home, because the QR scan needs Wi-Fi. Activation is automatic: when you land or dock in Montserrat and switch airplane mode off, the line registers on a Digicel tower on its own. If you layover in Antigua, the plan won't activate until a Montserrat tower picks it up, which is handy since Antigua runs its own carriers.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support yourself, on an iPhone go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android you'll find eSIM options in the network or SIM settings. If in doubt, confirm before you travel rather than on arrival.

It depends on your stay. A weekend day-trip from Antigua with a guided tour and a meal needs very little, so 1 to 2 GB is plenty. A week on the island at a villa in Olveston or Woodlands, with some Netflix in the evenings and daily WhatsApp coordination, fits comfortably into 3 to 5 GB. Longer stays of two weeks or more, especially if you're working remotely from a villa with slow Wi-Fi, are better on 10 GB or higher. Don't oversize: Montserrat isn't a place you'll burn through 50 GB unless you stream constantly.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's device. That's genuinely useful here, where villa Wi-Fi can be slow and you may want a steadier link for checking volcano observatory hazard updates or ferry and flight schedules. Just keep an eye on your allowance, as a hotspot tends to get through data faster than a phone on its own, particularly if anyone is streaming.

Blikst eSIMs are data plans, so the way to call and message is over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger or similar. That suits Montserrat perfectly, since WhatsApp is the island's default channel for reaching tour guides, taxi drivers, dive operators and villa hosts. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone, so you keep your usual number for any calls or texts that still need it.

Usually, yes. US carriers typically charge 10 dollars a day or more for roaming in Montserrat, and many non-North American carriers either don't cover the island or bill per megabyte, which adds up fast. A Blikst eSIM for a week comes in well below what even two days of typical roaming costs. Local Digicel or FLOW SIMs exist but mean a stop at the office during business hours, which isn't ideal when you've just arrived by ferry or small flight and want to start exploring straight away.
