Malta is compact, sun-blasted and shockingly hilly once you leave Valletta's grid — which is why you'll want working maps, the Tallinja bus app, and a live feed of the Gozo ferry schedule the entire time you're there. Coverage across the islands

Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Mellieħa and Birgu all have strong 4G. Gozo's main settlements — Victoria, Xlendi, Marsalforn and Mġarr — are well covered, with some thinning along the cliff paths near Dwejra and Ta' Ċenċ. Comino is small enough that signal from nearby masts on Malta and Gozo reaches the Blue Lagoon area, though it gets congested on peak summer days when thousands of visitors pile onto the same cells. Inside Valletta's older bastion walls and down in the stone-hewn corridors of the Hypogeum or Casemates, expect dropouts — they're building fabric, not network gaps.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a local SIM

If you're travelling from an EU country on a home plan, Malta is covered by roam-like-home rules — you may not need a travel eSIM at all. Check your domestic carrier first. UK post-Brexit travellers often hit roaming fees around £6–£7 per day depending on the provider; a Blikst plan comes in well under that for a week. Activation at the airport

• Gozo Fast Ferry and Gozo Channel: Two separate ferry operators run between Valletta/Ċirkewwa and Mġarr. Checking the schedule live beats printed timetables, especially in winter when crossings get cut for weather.
• Google Maps: Streets in Mdina, Victoria and the older parts of Birgu aren't really driveable — let the pedestrian mode keep you out of dead-end alleys.
• WhatsApp: Dive schools in Cirkewwa and Gozo, private boat operators, and many Airbnb hosts communicate primarily here.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Valletta and Sliema is easy on 2–3 GB if you're back at the hotel each night on Wi-Fi. A full week bouncing between Malta, Gozo and a Comino day trip with maps, photos and messaging fits in 5 GB. Two-week trips with a rental car touring every corner of both islands — plus hotspotting a tablet for notes or work — want 10 GB. Digital nomads basing in Sliema or Xlendi for a month should size up to 20 GB or more, especially if they're on video calls.

One small thing

Malta drives on the left and the roads are narrower than your rental car hints at. Live traffic in Google Maps will save you from a head-on encounter with a bus on the Mdina ring road — worth keeping data flowing even on short drives.
