Description

Luxembourg is small, well-heeled, trilingual, and the only country in the world with free public transport across its entire network — which is less relevant to your data plan than the fact that you'll be moving constantly: day trips to Vianden, Echternach, Schengen and Clervaux, or commuter-style hops between the City and the Kirchberg banking district. A Blikst Luxembourg eSIM runs on Proximus (operating locally through the Proximus Luxembourg / Tango network infrastructure), with 4G / 5G coverage across the Grand Duchy's cities, valleys and the Moselle wine region.

Where the network works

Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange and the Kirchberg district all get reliable 4G and 5G. The Moselle corridor (Remich, Grevenmacher, Schengen) is well covered. The Mullerthal (Little Switzerland) hiking region and Echternach have signal at the towns with some thinning in the sandstone canyons and forest trails. The Ardennes north — Vianden, Clervaux, Wiltz — have town coverage and occasional rural drops along the small country roads. Across Luxembourg's borders into Germany, Belgium or France, this plan stops working; buy a regional EU or country-specific eSIM if you're day-tripping to Trier or Arlon.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a local SIM

Luxembourg is in the EU, so EU home plans with roam-like-home typically cover it — check your domestic bundle before buying a separate eSIM. UK post-Brexit plans often bill £6+ per day. US and non-EU carriers charge around $10 per day. A Blikst plan for a week comes in comfortably below either. Physical Tango, POST or Orange SIMs are available at Luxembourg Airport (LUX) but require ID registration.

Activation on arrival

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. When you land at Luxembourg Airport (LUX) at Findel and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst profile registers on Proximus automatically. Turn off data roaming on your home line. Arriving by train via TGV from Paris, or by road from Trier, Metz or Brussels, your plan activates the moment you cross into Luxembourg and a Grand Duchy tower picks you up.

Apps you'll actually use

  • mobiliteit.lu: The official multi-modal transit app. Since public transport is free nationwide (trams, buses, trains in 2nd class), the app's job is just routing — and it does it well.
  • Google Maps: Useful for the old town's stairways and bastions — Luxembourg City is built on top of sheer cliffs and the pedestrian routes between upper and lower towns are counter-intuitive.
  • Bolt: Operates in Luxembourg City. Taxis are traditional and expensive by comparison.
  • Electric-charger apps (Chargemap, PlugShare): Luxembourg has dense EV-charging infrastructure; renting an EV makes sense here and the apps help locate live-availability.
  • Translation: Luxembourgish, French and German are all official; English is widespread in the capital. You'll rarely need the app except for rural Luxembourgish-only menus up north.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A weekend in Luxembourg City fits in 2 GB easily. A week touring the Grand Duchy — city, Mullerthal, Vianden, Clervaux, Moselle wine tasting — sits on 3–5 GB. Two-week business-plus-leisure trips where you're working from a hotel or co-working space on some days should look at 10 GB. Cross-border workers or remote workers basing in Luxembourg City for a month should size 10–20 GB and consider a regional EU plan if they're day-tripping to Trier, Metz or Brussels frequently.

A few good-to-knows

Luxembourg uses the euro. Contactless payment is essentially universal — cash is rarely needed. Keep data on so card and banking app approvals work. Public transport is free nationally but you still need the app for live timetables and routing. Driving is on the right; parking in the capital is tightly metered — the Park+Ride system works well, and the free trams carry you into the centre from there.

Install before you fly, land at LUX or roll in by train, and your Blikst line is already on Proximus before you've got to the baggage carousel. No queue, no bundle upsell, just working data in one of Europe's most densely-connected small countries.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Luxembourg eSIM runs on Proximus, operating locally through the Proximus Luxembourg and Tango network infrastructure. You get 4G and 5G speeds across the Grand Duchy's cities, valleys and the Moselle wine region. It's a solid choice for a country this small and densely connected, keeping you online whether you're in the capital or out touring the countryside.

Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange and the Kirchberg banking district all get reliable 4G and 5G, and the Moselle corridor around Remich, Grevenmacher and Schengen is well covered. Be honest with your expectations up north: the Mullerthal hiking region and Echternach have town signal that thins in the sandstone canyons and forest trails, while Vianden, Clervaux and Wiltz can drop along small rural roads.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic on arrival: when you land at Luxembourg Airport at Findel and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst profile registers on Proximus by itself. Arriving by TGV from Paris or by road from Trier, Metz or Brussels, it activates the moment you cross into the country.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support, look on iPhone under Settings, General, About for an EID number, or in your Android network settings. If you see an EID, you're almost certainly good to go.

It depends on your trip. A weekend in Luxembourg City fits in 2 GB easily. A week touring the Grand Duchy — city, the Mullerthal, Vianden, Clervaux and Moselle wine tasting — sits comfortably on 3 to 5 GB. A two-week business-plus-leisure trip, working from a hotel or co-working space on some days, is better on 10 GB. Basing in the city for a month points to 10 to 20 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or tablet — handy if you're working from a hotel or co-working space in Luxembourg City for a few days. With reliable 4G and 5G across the capital and Kirchberg, it makes a dependable backup connection for remote work or keeping a travelling companion online.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't include a local number for traditional calls or texts. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime, which is what most travellers do anyway. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number remains reachable for anything important.

It depends on where you're from. Luxembourg is in the EU, so EU home plans with roam-like-home typically cover it — check your domestic bundle first. UK post-Brexit plans often bill £6 or more per day, and US and non-EU carriers charge around $10 per day; a Blikst plan for a week comes in comfortably below either. Physical Tango, POST or Orange SIMs are sold at the airport but require ID registration.
