Description

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in Europe — 160 km² tucked between Switzerland and Austria — and you could walk across it in a long day. Most visitors come in from Zurich or Innsbruck for a day or two, hike up into the Malbun ski area in winter, stamp their passport at the Vaduz tourist office for fun, and move on. A Blikst Liechtenstein eSIM runs on Telecom Liechtenstein (Telecom Liechtenstein AG, operating as FL1), with 3G / 4G coverage across the entire principality — Vaduz, Schaan, Balzers, Triesenberg and up to Malbun.

Where FL1's network works

All of it. The country is small and flat enough along the Rhine valley — with the mountains on the eastern side — that coverage is comprehensive. Vaduz (the capital), Schaan (the largest town by population), Balzers and the road up to Triesenberg and Malbun all get 4G. The Fürstensteig ridge hike and other alpine routes above Malbun have signal at the refuges with occasional dips on the higher passes. The border with Switzerland (across the Rhine bridges) and Austria (at Schaanwald, Nofels) is right there — your phone will try to hand off frequently if you walk or drive across, so if you're taking the cheap Austrian bus back from a supermarket run, expect your eSIM to go dormant the moment you cross.

The Switzerland overlap

Telecom Liechtenstein operates using infrastructure closely linked with Swiss networks in practice, but Liechtenstein has its own dialling code (+423) and is a separate network region. A Switzerland eSIM will NOT automatically work in Liechtenstein at domestic rates on most plans — it'll roam. And a Liechtenstein eSIM won't work in Switzerland either. If you're doing a Zurich–Vaduz–Innsbruck loop, either buy a regional Europe eSIM that covers all three, or accept swapping eSIMs at the borders.

Cost vs. roaming or a local SIM

Liechtenstein is NOT in the EU; it's in the EEA and uses the Swiss franc. EU roam-like-home rules do NOT apply. Most EU and UK carriers bill Liechtenstein at non-EU roaming rates, which can be €5–€10 per day or more. US carriers charge around $10 per day. For a one- or two-day visit the roaming charge may be manageable; for anything longer the Blikst eSIM wins. Physical FL1 SIMs are available in Vaduz and Schaan but require ID registration and the carrier office hours are limited.

Activation and arrival

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Liechtenstein has no international airport — visitors arrive via Zurich Airport (ZRH, roughly 1 hour 15 by train-plus-bus) or via the smaller St. Gallen–Altenrhein (ACH) or Friedrichshafen (FDH) airports across Lake Constance. Your Swiss or Austrian roaming will handle the drive in; the Blikst line activates once you're in Liechtenstein and FL1 picks up your phone. Turn off data roaming on your home line to avoid it holding on as you cross.

Apps you'll actually use

  • Google Maps: Vaduz's pedestrianised centre, the trail network up to Malbun, and the ridge hikes all benefit from live routing.
  • Liemobil: The LIEmobil bus network app. The bus is the practical way to get around without a car — frequent and efficient.
  • Schneehöhen / Bergfex: Ski and weather condition apps for Malbun in winter. Snow report and lift status matter.
  • WhatsApp: Hotel and restaurant reservations, ski instructor bookings.
  • Translation: German (Alemannic dialect) is the official language; English is widespread in tourism. You'll rarely need the app.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A day trip fits in well under 1 GB. A two-day visit in summer, hiking and town-stamping, sits around 1 GB. A week at Malbun ski resort with daily WhatsApp coordination, weather checks and evening Netflix wants 3–5 GB. Longer stays are unusual for most visitors to Liechtenstein — if you're moving there for work or an extended stay, you'd typically switch to a Swiss or Liechtenstein resident plan rather than a travel eSIM.

A few good-to-knows

Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc (CHF). Contactless payment is universal — Apple Pay and Google Pay work at every till, including the bus. Keep data on for banking app approvals. Driving is on the right. The Principality is small enough that GPS can technically route you out of the country and back in on a normal driving trip; just be aware of your borders if data roaming is off elsewhere.

Install before you travel, arrive by train or car via Switzerland or Austria, and your Blikst line settles onto FL1 once you're inside Liechtenstein's borders. One QR code, the country's home network, and a travel bill that doesn't secretly bill you at Swiss or Austrian roaming rates.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
