Description

Latvia packs a lot of contrast into a small footprint — Riga's Art Nouveau boulevards, Jūrmala's pine-fringed Baltic beach, Cēsis and Sigulda for castles and forests, and Liepāja on the west coast for surf and Soviet-era war port history. Getting between them usually involves a train, a bus, a Bolt ride, or a rental car, and all of those benefit from live data. A Blikst Latvia eSIM runs on Tele2 Latvia, with 4G / 5G coverage across Riga, Jūrmala, Daugavpils, Liepāja, Ventspils, Cēsis and the main A-road corridors.

Where Tele2 Latvia's network works

Riga (including the airport, old town, and Moscow District), Jūrmala along the Gulf of Riga, Cēsis, Sigulda and the Gauja National Park gateway all have strong 4G with 5G in central Riga and parts of Jūrmala. Daugavpils, Rēzekne and the south-east (Latgale region) have 4G in towns and 3G along some forested stretches. Kurzeme (the western region) — Liepāja, Ventspils, Kuldīga with its wide Venta waterfall — is well covered. The Gauja valley forests, Kemeri National Park marshes and the Latgale lakes have signal at villages but dips under tree cover and along the longer hiking trails.

Cost vs. EU roaming or a local SIM

Latvia is in the EU, so EU travellers on roam-like-home plans may not need a separate eSIM at all — check your home allowance first. UK travellers post-Brexit often hit £6+ per day roaming depending on the plan. US and non-EU carriers typically charge $10 or more per day. A Blikst plan on Tele2 Latvia for a week beats either of those. Physical Tele2, LMT or Bite SIMs are available at Riga Airport (RIX) but require ID registration.

Activation at the airport

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. When you land at Riga International (RIX) and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst profile registers on Tele2 Latvia automatically. Turn off data roaming on your home line first. Overland arrivals from Estonia (Ainaži–Ikla), Lithuania (Saločiai–Grenctāle on the Via Baltica) or Russia (Terehova) will see the plan activate once a Latvian tower picks up; Baltic borders are porous network-wise, so check your phone is actually on the right SIM after crossing.

Apps you'll actually open

  • Google Maps: Riga's old town is pedestrian-only in many zones and the tram network runs on separate rights-of-way; live routing keeps driving sensible.
  • Bolt: The dominant ride-hail app (Bolt is actually an Estonian company — Tallinn-based — but it's everywhere in Latvia). Cheap and reliable in Riga.
  • Rīgas Satiksme: Riga public transport app. Trams, trolleybuses and buses share a card; the app handles mobile tickets.
  • Bolt Food and Wolt: Delivery apps are deeply embedded. Late-night food options are mostly via these.
  • Weather apps: Baltic weather flips fast; autumn and spring especially want a daily glance. Jūrmala beach days in summer can still have thunderstorms.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Riga fits in 2 GB if you're at the hotel most evenings. A week covering Riga, Jūrmala, Sigulda, Cēsis and maybe Kuldīga sits on 3–5 GB with a rental car. Two-week Baltic-loop travellers adding Estonia and Lithuania should look at regional Baltic plans or a Baltics-focused eSIM that covers all three — cleaner at borders. Remote workers basing in Riga for a month should size 10 GB or higher; co-working Wi-Fi is excellent but you'll want the eSIM for cafe and transit working sessions.

A few good-to-knows

Latvia uses the euro. Contactless payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay) is essentially universal — even tram and trolleybus readers accept tap-to-pay directly. Cash is barely needed except at some markets. Keep data on so card approvals work in real time. Driving is on the right; winter driving in January and February wants appropriate tyres (legally required between December 1 and March 1) and realistic expectations about daylight hours.

Install before you fly, land at RIX with Tele2 Latvia already on your Blikst line, and head straight onto the airport bus or into a Bolt. One QR code, and the country's network is working from the first glimpse of Riga Cathedral.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Latvia eSIM runs on Tele2 Latvia, one of the country's main mobile operators. You get 4G and 5G speeds, with full LTE across Riga, Jurmala, Daugavpils, Liepaja, Ventspils, Cesis and the main A-road corridors, plus 5G in central Riga and parts of Jurmala. It's a solid, modern network for navigation, ride-hailing and contactless payments wherever you travel.

Coverage is strong across the country. Riga, including the airport, old town and Moscow District, plus Jurmala, Cesis, Sigulda and the Gauja National Park gateway all have solid 4G, with 5G in central Riga and parts of Jurmala. Kurzeme in the west, including Liepaja, Ventspils and Kuldiga, is well covered. Honestly, expect 3G along some forested stretches in the south-east Latgale region, and signal dips under tree cover in the Gauja valley forests, Kemeri marshes and along longer hiking trails.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes just minutes. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: when you land at Riga International and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst profile registers on Tele2 Latvia by itself. Turn off data roaming on your home line first so you stay on the right SIM.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works flawlessly. The phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. On an iPhone you can check eSIM support under Settings, General, About by looking for an EID number; on Android it's in your network settings. If in doubt, that quick check takes a moment.

It depends on your trip. A long weekend in Riga fits in 2 GB if you're at the hotel most evenings. A week covering Riga, Jurmala, Sigulda, Cesis and maybe Kuldiga sits on 3 to 5 GB with a rental car. Remote workers basing in Riga for a month should size 10 GB or higher. If you're doing a two-week Baltic loop adding Estonia and Lithuania, a regional Baltics eSIM is cleaner at borders.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. That's handy for cafe and transit working sessions in Riga, or for keeping a second device online during day trips to Jurmala or Cesis. Just remember that hotspot use draws from the same data allowance, so heavier sharing will get through your plan faster.

This is a data plan, so it's built for mobile internet rather than traditional calls and texts. For talking and messaging you can use internet-based apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger over the data connection, which works fine for keeping in touch home. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM can stay in the phone, so you keep your usual number for any calls or texts that need it.

For most travellers, yes. UK travellers post-Brexit often hit 6 pounds or more per day roaming depending on the plan, and US or other non-EU carriers typically charge 10 dollars or more a day; a Blikst plan on Tele2 Latvia for a week beats either. Physical Tele2, LMT or Bite SIMs are sold at Riga Airport but require ID registration. Note that EU travellers on roam-like-home plans may not need a separate eSIM, so check your home allowance first.
