Description

India is arguably the world's toughest country to navigate without a data plan. Auto-rickshaw fares in Delhi and Mumbai go through Uber and Ola, UPI payments at street stalls and chai shops need live data, and IRCTC train bookings update PNR status only online. A Blikst India eSIM runs on the Vodafone network (Vi, the Vodafone Idea joint venture), with 4G across the major cities, highway corridors, and tourist circuits, plus 2G backfill in remote areas where the infrastructure is older. Install before you fly, land at Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Bengaluru (BLR), Chennai (MAA), or Kolkata (CCU), and skip the SIM registration counter in arrivals.

Where Vodafone Idea reaches

Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Goa's coastal belt, and the tourist triangle of Delhi–Agra–Jaipur all have consistent 4G. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Delhi–Jaipur NH 48 hold signal end to end. Kerala's backwater towns (Kochi, Alleppey, Varkala) carry 4G; the houseboat routes through the lagoons dip to 2G occasionally. Rajasthan's desert towns (Jaisalmer, Bikaner) have 4G at the fort perimeters; the Thar Desert interior drops to 2G or nothing. Ladakh, Spiti, and the high Himalayan passes (Rohtang, Chang La) are 2G-at-best, and the eSIM should be treated as a messaging-and-weather line there, not a streaming one. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have patchy 4G at the main settlements and very little elsewhere.

Important practical notes — the India SIM problem

Indian SIM cards for foreign tourists require DoT-compliant registration: passport, visa, photo, local reference, and in-person biometric capture at certain carriers. The process is slow and sometimes involves a 24-hour activation delay. A Blikst eSIM skips all of that — you install and activate like any other international eSIM, and the line works from the moment a Vi tower registers it. UPI payments (PhonePe, Google Pay India, Paytm) generally require Indian bank accounts linked to Indian numbers; as a tourist you'll still rely on cards and cash for most payments, and use your eSIM data for navigation, ride-hailing, and messaging.

Cost vs. local tourist SIMs

Local tourist SIMs (often via Matrix or airport kiosks) are relatively cheap but the registration friction is the real cost. US or EU roaming at $10–$12 per day turns a two-week India trip into a $140–$168 data bill on your home carrier. A Blikst 30-day 10 GB plan undercuts that several times over.

Arrival at a major metro airport

Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi. Airport Wi-Fi at Delhi T3, Mumbai T2, and Bengaluru's Kempegowda T2 is fast but requires an OTP sent to a local number — defeating the purpose if you don't have one. Having your Blikst line live means Uber and Ola, hotel driver WhatsApp, and the airport-to-city metro (in Delhi and Bengaluru) all work immediately.

Apps you'll actually use

  • Uber and Ola: Both operate in all major cities. Ola has deeper coverage in smaller cities and towns. Both are cheaper and less stressful than street auto-rickshaw negotiation.
  • Google Maps: Reliable for driving, patchy for walking in old-city quarters (Chandni Chowk, Varanasi's Old City). Drop a pin from your hotel before you head out.
  • IRCTC and Indian Railways apps: Confirm PNRs, seat assignments, and platform changes. The railway app's live train tracker is more accurate than station boards.
  • Swiggy and Zomato: Food delivery to your hotel room. Zomato doubles as a restaurant-discovery app with reliable opening-hours data.
  • WhatsApp: Drivers, tour operators, and guesthouse owners all communicate through WhatsApp. Phone calls are the backup.

Plan sizing

A one-week Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) with hotel Wi-Fi works on 5 GB. Two-week itineraries adding Varanasi, Udaipur, or Kerala sit at 10–15 GB. Three-week trips that include Ladakh, Goa, or the South need 20 GB or more because navigation and Uber-ing eat through data fast. Digital nomads based in Bengaluru, Mumbai, or Goa for a month should pick 50 GB or higher.

Install the eSIM before boarding. Land at Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru with your Vi line already provisioned, skip the SIM kiosk, and open Uber before you've left the taxi-rank queue. One QR code, a working line across the subcontinent, and no DoT paperwork.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst India eSIM runs on the Vodafone network, specifically Vi, the Vodafone Idea joint venture. You get 4G across the major cities, highway corridors and tourist circuits, with 2G backfill in remote areas where the infrastructure is older. It is a solid choice for navigation, ride-hailing and messaging in the places most travellers actually go, while keeping you connected when you stray off the beaten track.

You will get consistent 4G across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Jaipur, Goa's coastal belt and the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur triangle, plus the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH 48. Kerala's backwater towns carry 4G but houseboat lagoon routes dip to 2G. Rajasthan's Thar Desert interior and the high Himalayan passes of Ladakh and Spiti are 2G at best, so treat the eSIM as a messaging line there, not a streaming one.

Right after purchase you get a confirmation email with your eSIM details and a QR code. Install the profile at home over Wi-Fi before you fly by scanning that code in your phone's settings. Activation is automatic on arrival in India, so the line goes live the moment a Vi tower registers it. That lets you skip the SIM registration counter in arrivals at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata, and open Uber straight from the taxi-rank queue.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it is worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. To verify eSIM support generally, look on iPhone under Settings, General, About for an EID number, or check your Android network settings. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If all three line up, you are good to install the profile.

It depends on your route. A one-week Golden Triangle trip through Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with hotel Wi-Fi works comfortably on 5 GB. Two-week itineraries that add Varanasi, Udaipur or Kerala sit around 10 to 15 GB. Three-week trips taking in Ladakh, Goa or the South need 20 GB or more, since navigation and ride-hailing eat through data fast. Digital nomads basing themselves in Bengaluru, Mumbai or Goa for a month should pick 50 GB or higher.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. That is handy for getting work done from a Goa cafe or keeping everyone in your group online between hotels. Bear in mind your speeds follow the local network, so you will get full 4G in the cities but slower 2G backfill in remote desert or Himalayan areas where the towers are older.

These are data plans, so they do not come with a traditional phone number for regular calls and texts. In practice that is no problem in India, where drivers, tour operators and guesthouse owners all communicate through WhatsApp, with phone calls as the backup. You can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because an eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone.

Usually, yes. US or EU roaming at around 10 to 12 dollars a day turns a two-week India trip into a 140 to 168 dollar data bill, while a Blikst 30-day 10 GB plan undercuts that several times over. Local tourist SIMs are relatively cheap, but Indian SIMs for foreigners require DoT-compliant registration with your passport, visa, photo, a local reference and in-person biometrics, sometimes with a 24-hour delay. The Blikst eSIM skips all that paperwork entirely.
