Description

Iceland is one of the few countries where mobile data genuinely keeps you safe, not just connected. The Ring Road (Route 1) crosses lava fields, mountain passes, and single-lane bridges where Vegagerðin's road-closure alerts and SafeTravel.is check-ins are how you avoid driving into a storm. A Blikst Iceland eSIM runs on the Vodafone Iceland network (Sýn hf.), with 4G coverage across populated areas and 5G across Reykjavík, Akureyri, and parts of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Install before you fly, land at Keflavík (KEF) — 50 km from Reykjavík through the Reykjanes lava field — and skip the carrier store queue at the airport.

Where Vodafone Iceland's network works

Reykjavík, Reykjanes Peninsula (including KEF and the Blue Lagoon area), Selfoss, Vík, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri, Borgarnes, and the main Ring Road settlements all carry 4G. 5G is concentrated in Reykjavík and Akureyri. The Golden Circle route (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) has reliable 4G. The interior highlands — Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, the Fjallabak route — drop to 3G near huts and are offline elsewhere. The F-roads (mountain tracks) are generally offline. Westfjords and the Highland roads get patchy, and any sustained off-Ring-Road driving should include a SafeTravel.is pre-check.

Cost vs. home-carrier EU roaming

Iceland is inside the EEA, so EU home carriers' "roam like home" allowances often cover it — verify first. UK carriers frequently exclude Iceland from their European roaming bundles despite the EEA membership; US carriers charge $10–$12 per day. A Blikst 15-day 10 GB plan comes in well below two or three days of US-carrier charges, and for self-drivers on a Ring Road trip, the reliability of a dedicated local line matters more than saving a few króna.

Arrival at Keflavík

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. KEF is 50 km from Reykjavík — the Flybus or rental-car drive takes about 50 minutes. Switch off airplane mode after landing and the Blikst line registers on Vodafone Iceland automatically. Rental-car counters at KEF are busy; having data live means you can reread the pickup instructions, check for ash or wind advisories on vedur.is, and confirm your Airbnb code while you queue.

Apps that matter in Iceland

  • SafeTravel.is: The official travel-safety service. File your itinerary when you go off-Ring-Road or into the highlands. If you don't check in on time, they know where to start looking.
  • Vedur.is and road.is: Vedur is the national weather service; road.is shows live road conditions, closures, and wind warnings. Both are essential for winter self-drives and useful year-round.
  • Aurora forecast (Vedur): Free cloud-cover-plus-Kp aurora predictor. Winter visitors use this nightly. Strong Kp with clear skies drives midnight drives to Þingvellir or the south coast.
  • Google Maps and Maps.me: Reliable on the Ring Road. Some Westfjord and highland tracks are mis-routed on Google — cross-check with Maps.me or the 4x4 rental's paper map.
  • Parka.is and appyParking: Reykjavík central parking uses zone-based mobile payments. ATMs and cash aren't needed; your card handles everything.

Plan sizing

A long weekend in Reykjavík plus a Golden Circle day trip works on 3–5 GB. A one-week south-coast itinerary (Reykjavík–Vík–Jökulsárlón and back) fits 5–10 GB. A full Ring Road drive over 9–12 days sits at 10–20 GB depending on how many photos you're uploading to the cloud. Photographers and content creators on a two-week circumnavigation should pick 30 GB or higher. Winter aurora chasers refresh vedur.is constantly — budget an extra 2–3 GB for that alone.

Install the eSIM before you fly. Land at Keflavík with your Vodafone Iceland line already provisioned, pick up the rental car, and drive the 50 km to Reykjavík with road and weather data live. One QR code, a working connection across the Ring Road, and a safety margin that doesn't depend on petrol-station Wi-Fi.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
