Description

Guernsey is one of those destinations where the paperwork catches travellers out. It's a Crown Dependency, not part of the UK and not in the EU, which means UK "roam free" plans often exclude it and EU roaming definitely doesn't apply. Your home carrier may charge you as if you'd flown to Australia. A Blikst Guernsey eSIM runs on JT (Jersey Telecom's Guernsey operations — despite the name, they serve both islands), with 3G and 4G across St Peter Port, St Sampson, the parish roads, and the smaller islands of Herm and Sark reachable from Guernsey's ferry terminal.

Where JT reaches

St Peter Port, Cobo Bay, the entire Guernsey coast road, the airport area, and the inland parishes all have solid 4G. The cliff paths on the south coast between Moulin Huet and Petit Bot have 4G in most stretches with occasional dips in wooded valleys. Herm gets a signal from Guernsey towers — usable on the Shell Beach side but weaker on the west. Sark (the world's last feudal island, reachable by ferry) has coverage in the main village area; the further-flung parts of the island near the coup de la Sarrasine can drop to 3G or briefly go dark. Alderney is served by JT as well but sits outside a standard Guernsey plan — check before assuming coverage there.

Cost vs. home-carrier roaming

UK carriers almost universally charge Guernsey as a "rest of world" destination — anywhere from £2 to £6 a day on newer plans, and legacy plans can be worse. US and EU carriers treat it as international at $10–$12 per day. Local JT prepaid SIMs exist but require a shop visit on arrival. A Blikst plan is the simplest way to land with data working — especially on a short weekend break where you don't want to waste time in a Specsavers-opposite phone shop.

Activation when you arrive

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you travel. When you land at Guernsey Airport (GCI) or arrive by ferry from Poole, Portsmouth, or Jersey into St Peter Port, switch off airplane mode and the plan registers on JT. If you're hopping over from Jersey, the eSIM stays dormant until a Guernsey-based JT tower sees it — the network is technically the same operator but the plans are priced separately.

Data habits on the island

  • Google Maps walking and driving: Guernsey's parish lanes are narrow and often unmarked beyond the occasional granite stone — maps keep you out of farmers' fields.
  • Travel Trident and Isle of Sark Shipping: Apps and websites for the Herm and Sark ferries. Schedules depend on weather; last-boat-back is a hard stop.
  • Guernsey Travel app and bus tracker: Useful for the £1 bus network, which circles the island.
  • WhatsApp: B&Bs, cottage rentals, and local tour operators often confirm bookings here rather than by email.
  • OS Maps or ViewRanger: Cliff-path walking routes benefit from proper Ordnance Survey mapping; the coastal footpath is spectacular and easy to go slightly off.

Plan sizing

A weekend break runs on 1–3 GB easily — hotels and guest houses have Wi-Fi, so the eSIM mostly covers you walking the cliff paths and eating in the St Peter Port harbour area. A full week with Herm and Sark day-trips fits 3 GB comfortably. Longer stays — remote workers who've picked Guernsey for quiet — typically use 10 GB over a month, assuming you're using property Wi-Fi for heavy video calls.

Practical notes

Guernsey is walkable, bikeable, and small enough that you're rarely far from a café with free Wi-Fi. Your eSIM is essential on the cliff paths, on the inter-island ferries, and if you're self-driving around the north-coast lanes. Install the profile before you travel, and land at Aurigny or Condor Ferries already connected to JT — ready for the first stroll down to Castle Cornet.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Guernsey eSIM runs on JT, which is Jersey Telecom's Guernsey operation. Despite the name, JT serves both islands, so you are on a proper local network rather than an expensive roaming partner. You get 3G and 4G speeds, with solid 4G across most of the island and 3G as the fallback in a few of the more remote spots.

JT gives you 4G across St Peter Port, St Sampson, Cobo Bay, the entire coast road, the airport area and the inland parishes. The south-coast cliff paths between Moulin Huet and Petit Bot have 4G in most stretches, with occasional dips in wooded valleys. Herm is usable on the Shell Beach side but weaker to the west, and Sark covers the main village while remote parts near the coup de la Sarrasine can drop to 3G or go dark. Alderney sits outside a standard Guernsey plan, so check before relying on it.

Right after purchase you receive a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Install the profile over Wi-Fi before you travel by scanning the QR code provided. It then activates automatically: when you land at Guernsey Airport or arrive by ferry into St Peter Port, switch off airplane mode and the plan registers on JT. If you hop over from Jersey, it stays dormant until a Guernsey-based JT tower sees it.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it is worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. As a quick check, on iPhone look under Settings, General, About for an EID number, and on Android check the network settings. Your handset must also be carrier-unlocked. If both are true, you are almost certainly good to go.

Guernsey is small and most hotels and guest houses have Wi-Fi, so you do not need much. A weekend break runs comfortably on 1 to 3 GB, mostly covering you on the cliff paths and around the St Peter Port harbour. A full week including Herm and Sark day-trips fits 3 GB nicely. Longer stays, such as remote workers settling in for the quiet, typically use around 10 GB over a month, assuming property Wi-Fi handles heavy video calls.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or tablet. That is handy if you are working remotely from a cottage, sorting ferry bookings for Herm or Sark, or pulling up Ordnance Survey maps for the coastal footpath while another device rides along. Just remember signal dips in the wooded valleys and on Sark's remote edges will affect anything you tether too.

This is a data-only plan, so it does not come with a phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that is rarely a problem, because you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar, and local B&Bs and tour operators on Guernsey often confirm bookings over WhatsApp anyway. Since the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone.

Usually, yes. Guernsey is a Crown Dependency, outside the UK and the EU, so UK roam-free plans often exclude it and EU roaming does not apply. UK carriers tend to charge it as a rest-of-world destination at around £2 to £6 a day, while US and EU carriers treat it as international at roughly $10 to $12 per day. Local JT prepaid SIMs exist but mean a shop visit on arrival, whereas a Blikst plan has you landing with data already working.
