Description

Guatemala runs on shuttle vans, WhatsApp confirmations, and last-minute volcano-tour rescheduling. Between Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Tikal, and Semuc Champey, you'll switch operators, drivers, and lanchas almost daily — and every handoff confirms itself through a WhatsApp message. A Blikst Guatemala eSIM runs on Telecomunicaciones (the local carrier), with 3G and 4G across Guatemala City, Antigua, the Lake Atitlán villages, Quetzaltenango, and most of the Petén tourist corridor up to Flores and Tikal.

Where the network reaches (and where it doesn't)

Guatemala City and Antigua have strong 4G. Panajachel, San Pedro, San Marcos, and the lake-shore villages around Atitlán have usable 4G, though signal can dip in the volcano shadow between lanchas. The Pan-American highway has consistent coverage through most of the western highlands. Coban and the road toward Lanquín and Semuc Champey fall to 3G, and Semuc itself is famously off-grid — the caves, the pools, and most of the valley get little to no signal. Tikal has 3G at the park entrance and the village of El Remate; deep in the ruins it's patchy. Volcán Acatenango and Fuego overnight hikes get signal from certain ridges but not others. Plan for offline stretches.

Cost vs. local options

You can buy a Tigo or Claro SIM in Guatemala City, but registration with a passport is required and the paperwork is slow. US carriers typically charge $10–$12 per day for Guatemala roaming (T-Mobile's Magenta/Go5G plans include basic data in Mexico but usually charge extra here). A Blikst plan skips the paperwork and lands on the same backbone. For a one-week Antigua-Atitlán-Tikal classic loop, you'll save substantially over daily roaming.

Activation and arrival

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. When you land at La Aurora (GUA) — or the smaller Mundo Maya International (FRS) if flying directly into Flores — switch off airplane mode and the plan registers automatically. Turn data roaming off on your home line. The drive from La Aurora to Antigua is about an hour; your eSIM will keep Google Maps and WhatsApp running the whole way.

Apps that run Guatemala travel

  • WhatsApp: Every shuttle confirmation, lancha time change, and volcano-tour update arrives here. Budget for constant background use.
  • Uber: Works in Guatemala City and Antigua. Safer and cheaper than flagging taxis in the capital.
  • Google Maps with offline downloads: Cache Antigua, the Atitlán area, and Flores/Tikal before you go. Rural routes load slowly.
  • iOverlander: Useful for self-drivers and overland travellers — community-sourced notes on gas stations, border posts, and campgrounds.
  • Volcán apps and weather: INSIVUMEH posts eruption updates for Fuego and Pacaya. Worth following if you're on the Acatenango hike.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A one-week Antigua-Atitlán classic runs on 3–5 GB. A full two-week loop adding Tikal, Semuc Champey, and the highlands fits 10 GB comfortably — remember you'll be offline for the Semuc portion regardless. Language-school students staying a month in Antigua or Quetzaltenango typically use 10–20 GB. Digital nomads on longer stays with video calls should size for 50 GB or go unlimited.

Practical notes

Chicken buses don't have Wi-Fi, and tourist shuttle Wi-Fi is a rumour at best. Your eSIM is the only reliable connection between stops. Most hostels and hotels in Antigua, Panajachel, and Flores have decent Wi-Fi, so save heavy uploads for evenings. Install the profile before you fly, keep your home line on for SMS 2FA, and land at La Aurora already connected to the Telecomunicaciones network.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
